The building is gorgeous - and super clean and tasteful, inside and out. I went down to the basement when I arrived to offer my help setting up for the reception. I even brought vegan doughnuts which looked garish next to the wide array of home baked goodies brought in by volunteers in the community (it turned out ok - they were a hit!). The pastor is super nice -- and the service was very low key and sweet. They even record their regular services and memorials so you can listen on their website! Inside the sanctuary - it was just beautiful. Nice big high ceiling in sort of a dome/half circle shape -- the place had fantastic acoustics. There's also a LIBRARY! The library was pretty impressive - lots of Quaker history and other spiritual books, as well as a children's section -- all labeled with Dewey decimal system and a little self-service check out area! Most importantly - the people were incredibly welcoming, warm and supportive. There were many people who had known my great uncle for a long time - and they shared their memories with me, including one woman who had recently moved into to the same retirement community where my uncle had been living and who remembered meeting him when she was a little girl more than 50 years ago! Thanks so much to the Newberg Friends for their grace and kindness.

But what makes this chruch seem to stand out to us, is the ease in meeting folks that carry forward into the day-to-day life during the week. I run into someone at the store and they stop and talk with me. You truly feel you are a part of a family. There are many young families as well as older couples and singles. It's a great mix. They offer a wonderful Sunday school for kids and there are many interesting programs they offer for adults. They also have a fantastic Montessori Preschool that we discovered while attending the church. We've had two children attend. The teaching approach and topics they cover in a year are interesting and fun...even for adults. All around, we are thankful and blessed to have such a wonderful country church in our community. Give it a try, it won't disappoint.

With that said, the paster is just okay, she talks is a pretty monotone voice and the lesson that I went to was just okay. They were also welcoming new members to the group and she made us form a circle while holding hands, I don't like physical touch, so it made me a bit uncomfortable. Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure it's great for other people. Also, as a note, they don't require masks anymore, so don't listen to "mask nazi" guy.

We first visited because it had been recommended by several as a solid truth and love filled church and we would agree. The community made us feel welcome and helped us get into a community group that we were already connected with from my wife's work. We have also had the chance to get to know more about the families and elders at the church and that has been confirming as well. It is also a good size I think, 2 services 100 to 150 people each service. We can't speak to the programs for children. They seem to have classes for elementary and younger most weeks. If you want a Christ centered and gospel preaching church that makes people feel welcome and serves the community and the world, we would definitely recommend this church.

Anyway, we went on a nice little romp in the woods behind the abbey. There are many many trails out there but they are not well marked. Be sure to bring a water bottle and a boy scout, because you're bound to lose track of the trails occasionally. Despite the poor markings, the woods around the abbey were beautiful and unspoiled (except for the section that was logged recently...but..um...nevermind). I can see myself spending many summer afternoon wandering the woods surrounding the Trappist Abbey. I'll be back....with GPS and a water bottle. If you visit, be sure to respect the silence, take a few minutes to talk to the guy in the visitor's center, and enjoy God's beautiful creation!
