Early in the morning the kindergarten call in for juice and buns on their field trip, while tucked in the corner students sit and study (or check their Facebook / Twitter / Yelp!). The ladies behind the counter are always cheerful and ready to chat. One morning the boss was happy for me to first pay with all my small coinage, and then offered to swap the rest for notes. I walked away with a much lighter wallet and she was smiling all the way to ... the register! The korvapuusti (cinnamon scrolls) are big with just the right amount of sugar and cinnamon. Different days have different themes, sometimes it korvapuusti, while other days voisilmä pulla (butter-eye bun) is the flavour of the day. On the savoury side you can find rice pies (with or without egg butter) and porridge with the trimming is sometimes available. The porridge was a little salty for my taste, but the serve was generous. Take-away sandwiches / rolls are always flying off the shelves. Other choices include salmon and meat pies. The regular filter coffee is kept fresh and your santsi-kuppi (coffee refill) is an 'easy on the wallet' 0,70€. While not the cheapest in town, it's not the most expensive either. Obviously the best in town are the free one :) There is plenty of seating with wide pram-friendly aisles. The tables don't get cleaned super quickly once it get's busy and there is no rack to place your tray when you leave. I've been a regular for close on 12 months and I still look for the tray-trolley rack! Remember, the café is in the Malmi Nova Shopping Centre. There are tables by the window - with a view towards Malmi VR-station or you could settle in with the 'parliament' who commandeer the tables closest to the shopping centre walkway. * Note this review if for the café only, to date I haven't taken lunch there.

Walking around the town doesn't take too long (2 hours), so it's nice to have a place to kill some time/get out of the cold/heat, and grab some nice coffee/drink and kick up your legs. This GEM of a cafe/bar is right under the main overpass/road into town. The downstairs area is bustling and cozy, but the upstairs area is the really cute place so I definitely recommend everyone to go up there to check it out after you get your wine/coffee/etc. It's got a great wooden decor inside, a really romantic vibe, but I could see it getting my happening at night/on the weekend nights. There were seriously like 3 couples on coffee dates there. I've heard the coffee here is great but didn't have any, just had a nice glass of red wine. One thing I'd say is that it gets really crowded/long line when a big crowd walks in, they should probably figure out an easier way to serve people. BTW, this place was listed in Lonely Planet, and normally I don't love all their suggestions but this place is definitely worthy, especially for a smaller town like this.

It's not just the fresh coffee, hot tea and oven-fresh korvapuusti (Finnish cinnamon scrolls) that keep us coming back, although these are perfectly good reasons to drop in! The staff here are all trainees from the city's youth program, and so get exposure to both catering operations and customer service. Everything here is prepared by the employees for sale in the café. The location is peaceful, hidden away in the forest close to the Pikku Kallahti and across the road from Kallahti beach. The summer terrace is shaded, popular with cyclists, dog walkers and pram-pushing parents alike. Come winter time, squeeze into one of the big communal tables in the back room and thaw out over a variety of reading materials. + Never too crowded. - Sometimes the staff are not so friendly, give them a chance though.

Sävy was a short walk, and the coffee shop I found that opened the earliest. Though it's listed as being open at 7:30, they actually open at 8am. I showed up at 7:47, and happily waited the extra 13 minutes until they invited me in. (What else am I going to fucking do with 13 minutes?). I ordered a breakfast combo that included a croissant, granola/yogurt bowl, and upgraded my coffee drink to a double cappuccino. The barista asked me what perfume I was wearing because apparently I smelled good. I remarked that it may have been the woman ahead of me, but it happened to be the dude's girlfriend, so he was pretty sure it wasn't her. I wasn't wearing a fragrance but the air BnB had a Linden Blossom bath wash...anyways. I was feeling good about smelling good even though I felt like shit. I digress I was stupid hungry, so I demolished that croissant before my coffee drink and granola bowl was ready. It was buttery, flaky, fresh and delicious. "On point" as the kids say. I was too tired to remember to order oat milk with my coffee, so I drank it with whole milk. It was rich, and chocolately like I like my coffee drinks. I might pay for the whole milk later, but it couldn't be worse than the airline food I had yesterday. So fuck it. The granola bowl with yogurt was legit. Breakfast here just hits different. The presentation was great, and it had the perfect ratio of fruit, honey, and cinnamon. I had a little more time to kill so I ordered another single cappuccino with oatmilk this time (internally convincing myself it would offset the whole milk drink) it was also delicious.
