The library staff is always hosting events and or going to events. Always so fun at the library.

The Auburn building is a great library space -- it's a shame it can't be replicated in more areas of the city. The foyer is open and warm, with a statue of the branch's namesake keeping safe watch over the books. I'm always blown away by the amount of light that is filtered into the space through large windows, a feature that makes this library all the more inviting to both adult and child. The layout is wonderful (for a city the size of Auburn), with separate areas for children, (and story time), older children, and teens, with "suggestions" to guide reluctant readers. This branch always seems to have an abundance to documentaries and CDs, as well as a healthy collection of graphic novels. On top of the friendly staff at the front, there is a second resource/help desk in the middle of the library, between the fiction and non-fiction shelves, to help any library or technology newbies. I love this library except for the parking lot. It is narrow and this branch gets very busy so it's…read morehard to find parking at times. Other than that it's a newer building that's clean and well kept up. They have a drop box l outside that is perfect to just run up and dump and get out of that hairy lot. They also have rooms that you can rent for non profit meetings. It's free of charge and they are set up with tables and chairs. They have a large selection of books movies CD's and a good children's area. There are plenty of computers too. Printing things is easy but they do charge for each page printed. That's kinda pricey but hey if you're deprecate. Highly recommend.

Here I attended a genealogy presentation. It cost me nothing, it started on time, and I learned a lot from the knowledgeable presenter. I feel interested in learning more about the Genealogy Center's international collection of physical and digital resources and free access to databases.

I'm in the process of gathering documentation to join the DAR and I made a trip from Indy to the…read moreAllen County Public Library Genealogy area this week (March 17). I was challenged to confirm that an ancestor was the granddaughter of a Rev. War veteran. After weeks of searching, I wasn't having any luck to find acceptable docs and my mentor in the DAR is fantastic but this stumped her too. Census rolls and marriage licenses weren't enough. I met with Jeff Garver, a genealogist at the Allen County Public Library. Before my arrival, he had already done some research and he provided much help, but we still needed definitive proof of the lineage. Then he suggested checking an 1800s "Deed Book" from Monroe County, where my ancestors primarily lived. In the book, Jeff found a deed written by the parents of my 3rd Great-grandmother where they sold property to their daughter. The deed document is witnessed and signed by the magistrate of the time and clearly identifies the parents of my ancestor (of whom both respective fathers fought in the Rev. War) as their daughter. It was like bells went off, and hopefully the final piece of the puzzle for my DAR application. I never would have thought of looking at deeds and now know why the Allen County Public Library and its Genealogy Dept. are so highly regarded. Am so appreciative to have such an excellent research source in Indiana with equally excellent professionals. Everyone in the genealogy section was highly trained and helpful - special kudos to Jeff Garner.

They sponsor many special events for the community, including lots of activities for kids, live outdoor concerts ("Summertime Tunes"), job fairs, and computer classes just to name a few. The best way to find out about upcoming events is to like them on Facebook. As for amenities, they have free Wi-Fi, as well as a number of computers that are available for public use. They also have a wonderful history room with all sorts of cool exhibits from bygone days (White Pigeon is the oldest incorporated village in the State of Michigan). The staff are very helpful and friendly. They have a good sized collection for a small town, but if you want something they don't have, they'll order it from another library and have it for you within a couple of days, at no charge of course. You can also browse their catalog online, which I think is pretty advanced for a rural public library. Finally, this is the only library that I know of where you are allowed to talk on your cell phone, as long as you are considerate and don't bother other patrons. How cool is that?
