I have been buying gold and silver jewelry and scrap from individuals and estate sales for 15 years. So, I have gotten pretty good at testing the items. also, use a very powerful magnet to pass on plate and such. as a test, I sent them (garfield) 20.18 grams of 14k gold which I tested and confirmed. that would be net gold grams of 11.748. thats 58.33% gold. they claimed that the gold assayed out at around 5 carats. which is either bad math or bad scales or bad refining. that is just not possible on 14k gold. now, the worst gold from the worst mall jeweler is at least 10 carats. double what they "assayed" as a rule, you will not find gold jewelry under 10 carats. so, not sure if they are thieves, or liars, or just bad at what they do. you can form your own opinion. so there is that. seller beware. all that said, I would Not do business with these people again, and I do not recommend you do either. try and find a refiner close to where you live. and test them out with a small amount of gold that you are absolute in your confirmation of its carat weight. or get recommendations from people you know and trust. bottom line, avoid these people is my opinion. like you would avoid selling at a pawn shop or a cash for gold business where you might get 15% of the value of your gold, if you are lucky. good luck. read more

In addition to excellent value - which is hard not to get in a metals spot market, right? - the speed of processing my shipment to processing my check could not have been faster. Add to this superb customer care! I mean, you're sending a box or crate full of precious metals to a place sight-unseen, so you could be a bit nervous about the arrival details, etc. I received an email and then a phone call (!) from a very pleasant, very friendly Account Manager (Archie) who confirmed the arrival and told me when, approximately, I could expect a valuation. WOW....they couldn't have made it any easier or done it any more efficiently. They immediately sent me a mailing label to cover the cost of shipping my gold dental scrap, and they notified me as soon as they received it. A few days later, they sent me the assessment, broken down by the three metals it contained, gold, silver and palladium. A few days after that, I had my check. Obviously, it's not enough money to affect my financial status, but it took a little of the sting out of my dental bill. What a pleasure to deal with! I went in personally since it was my first time taking any gold to them. Vaughn Archie, my account manager, explained the process to me. Since it was a friday afternoon he said my gold wouldn't be melted until monday. On monday I received an email with the weight and a copy of the check going out. I had some general questions about weight, assay, how the amount of $$ is determined. Archie got back to me the next day and said there was an small error in the amount they sent and he was processing another check for $83 which I received a few days later. No good. They lie about the percentages. I was personally told over the phone by Vaughn Archie that they pay 95% on gold and silver no matter what the amount is. And after time they would decrease that amount. If they lie about the percentages of there payout, what else are they lying about...purity? Don't trust them. I didn't know about Garfield Refining until I needed to have a tooth removed that had a gold crown. My dentist's assistant gave me the little package material and saved my tooth for me and told me how to send it in. It cost me nothing, not even postage. This company e-mailed me as soon as the package reached me and communicated with me through this short refining deal, thanked me for my business and sent me a check with all the details of what they found in refining this small item. I am very impressed with this company and would certainly do business with them again. I had no idea of the value and was grateful for the dentist's staff for telling me about this company. My last experience was a bad one. Always satisfied with other shipments but after dealing with Taylor Johnson on my last I truly know he is a crook. After my fathers passing the family worked together to send this shipment in. I had to call for a larger package to ship the items. He emailed and stated that there was no value the items were only base metal. What a total lie. We actual weighed and took pictures of the material. After requesting to have it shipped back we received about half of the material we sent in. Soooo what happened to the rest of the items. I am sure Taylor knows. Once a crook always a crook. This place is a total rip off, your better off taking your gold to a local cash for gold store. I sent in pure yellow gold stuff, that I had valued at around $800, well they called and told me that it was semi precious material(total liars) and said that they were going to send me a check for $200. I refused and told them to send me what I had sent in. They sent me a blob of melted metal, and now I don't know if they sent me everything I had sent originally(most likely not) They try to make it seem as though you'll never get more for your gold elsewhere but their full of it read more

I sent in over 9 oz. of mixed gold. A little over 4 oz. 18k (75%) gold and a little over 5 oz. of 14k (58.5%) gold. I got back a wire for $4300. That barely covered the 18k gold and no mention of the 14k gold. A little over 3 oz. out of 9 oz of minimum 58.5% gold. I wrote an email to the account executive who "handled" my order inquiring if there is security footage because of the vast difference in what I sent and what was received. I received no response. It's like they don't even care. I personally verified the stamps and gold acid test. Garfield doesn't give you a weight of what was received and a weight afterwards. That is what most refiners do because it protects them. Not verifying what was received can lead to dishonesty. Really disappointed in them. read more

Just be careful when you get a quote about how much they will pay for your silver or gold (and other metals). When I first called them, they told me they paid spot for the recoverable amount of precious metal, in other words spot for 100% pure metal. What I sent them was .800 silver, which means the weight would be reduced by about 80%, which means I thought I was getting 80% of what they would have paid if what I sent them was 100% pure. As expected, they first refined the metal, recovering about 80% pure metal, or 80% of the original weight. But THEN they multiplied THAT amount by another 80%. The net is that I only got about 64% of the spot price on the original weight of the silver. They had not explained that their "spot price payment factor" was 80% of spot, no matter what the purity was, AFTER the weight is already reduced by recovering the pure metal (coincidentally 80% in my case since it was .800 silver). Now that I understand how it works I can live with that; I just wish they had been more transparent about it in the first place. read more

Not good. They undervalue palladium as they think their clients aren't aware on price. Sent quick undervalued check. Their "24 Karat" guarantee says that they will gladly returned metals in their processed form. I called as soon as they emailed their "valuation" and wanted my metals returned. They do not give assay report but a general "valuation". Took over a month to return my metals. Blamed it on covid and when received it was NOT the metals that I sent. I sent high percentage palladium dental scrap. They sent back copper. Shalina and the rest of Garfield lies. Do not recommend. They can't lie about gold but dentists should be wary about their "valuation". Those old PFMs have more Pd that you think. read more

After checking around locally for a business to buy my old gold fillings with no luck, I came across Garfield Refining on-line. The website made it seem very easy to sell the gold fillings. I contacted them on-line and received a mail packet within a week. I subsequently received an email from Vaughn Archie stating he would be my contact person and would keep me informed of the progress. After mailing the packet back, I received an update email within a few days stating they had received the packet and would start the evaluation process. Within a matter of days I received an email from Vaughn with the appraised value of my gold fillings and indicating that a check would be mailed shortly. A sales person named Daniel came to my office to get my gold to be refined. He explained that I would get an estimate but if I was unhappy they would return my gold. What was not explained was that it would be in the melted form. The gold which was all yellow weighed 7.95 oz. Three days later the report came in as under 2 oz. It seems that 6 oz. disappeared. I called immediately and asked to have my gold returned and the next day a cheque came to my office which I didn't OK. They said that they would return my metal in the melted form which is not what I wanted but too late. They claimed that there was wastage. Not 75% for sure. Total rip off. Be careful read more

Do not send your silver or gold to Garfield they will steal from you. If you send $1000 worth of gold you will will be told they will pay top dollar but when you get the check in the mail it will be more like $200. You will get mad, refuse the check and demand they return your gold/silver. They will return, at best, 60% of your gold/silver in a melted deformed blob. When you ask where the other 40% of material went they will tell you there was waste or they will claim some of it wasn't real and they disposed of it. You are better off selling it on ebay, craigslist, etc read more

If you are sending in dental scrap, definitely do not use Garfield. I sent in a combination of high noble, noble, and base metal crowns. The check that they sent was less than I should have received for the few yellow gold crowns that I sent in. While I don't know for sure, I'm speculating that they assumed that I didn't know that many of the "white metal" crowns were noble and high noble crowns (in addition to some base metal crowns). I can't say what happened for sure, whether it's management or an individual employee with questionable actions, but it's quite frustrating. Regardless, I'd encourage not using Garfield. read more

I know there was at least $2.00 in there if not more in scrap.They sent me a check for $0.00 and a comment " No precious metal contained in your shipment". So for a measly $2.00 comment I get to leave a horrible review for this place. Don't send your scrap to them it's a scam. Last time I do the mail in your Precious metals to us for an honest appraisal scam. Just glad I didn't send my moms gold necklace with my shipment. My dentist provided an envelope to send in my tooth to Garfield Refining Co. According to the dentist, the tooth contained gold, and it had the appearance of containing gold. I rceived check for $0.00 stating that there were "no precious metals in my shipment." My shipment was not returned. I am so glad that I did not send in any other items!!! read more
