Let's cut to the chase. This is not my first review for Lesher's Poultry Farm. And interestingly,…read moredespite "Poultry Farm" being right there in the name, once again my review has absolutely nothing to do with yardbirds. It was SUNFLOWER TIME! Every year, Lesher's plants an absolutely enormous field of sunflowers, and every year the internet seems to collectively rally around waiting for those beautiful little faces to reach full bloom. After visiting last summer, seeing the sunflower field immediately became one of those experiences I knew I wanted to turn into an annual tradition. So this year, I stalked social media updates like it was my job. Full bloom was expected around Labor Day weekend, but I knew I had absolutely no interest in experiencing this beautiful, peaceful scene alongside a million of my closest friends. I decided to time my attack for the Thursday evening before Labor Day, hoping I'd get nearly peak blooms without peak crowds. Last year, I started another part of this tradition completely by accident. I brought something delicious along, popped the hatch of my car and had myself a little car picnic while enjoying the sunflowers. Good food, a beautiful late-summer evening and acres of sunflowers turned into one of those simple little core memories that stuck with me all year. Obviously, it needed to happen again. This year's picnic companion was a beautiful little peanut butter pie I'd picked up from a farm market on my way. I pulled into Lesher's around 5:30pm on a Thursday evening, found plenty of parking, backed myself into a spot, popped the hatch and settled in with my pie. And the sunflowers this year were absolutely STUNNING! Sunflower blooms stretched as far as I could see. People wandered around taking pictures. Families explored together. Professional photographers were capturing portraits. Kids were giggling. Adults were laughing. Other people simply stood quietly and took it all in. And there I was, sitting in the back of my car eating peanut butter pie and watching the late-summer sun settle over a giant field of flowers. Tell me life isn't incredibly beautiful sometimes! That's what I love most about this place. Yes, the sunflowers are spectacular. Yes, you'll get beautiful pictures. But there's something about the whole scene that makes me slow down for a minute. And the price for this entire little late-summer adventure? Exactly $0. Take the drive. Pack some snacks. Enjoy the beauty the Universe provides. Listen to the kids giggling and the adults laughing. Watch the sun drop behind acres of yellow flowers. Take a minute to give thanks for some of the troubles you DON'T have and appreciate the fact that you got to be standing somewhere this beautiful in the first place. Sometimes an adventure doesn't need to be elaborate or expensive to become one of the things you remember most. This is officially one of my traditions now. As long as Lesher's keeps planting those sunflowers, I'll keep showing up with something delicious in the back of my car. See you next summer! PRO TIP: If you have some flexibility, watch Lesher's social media for bloom updates and consider visiting on a weekday evening before the busiest weekend. I had ample parking and plenty of room to wander without feeling like I was fighting a crowd. Pack a snack or dinner, too. I am now firmly convinced that sunflower car picnics should be a thing!

This review is for the Sunflower farm open to the public…read more OMG! My second visit and still wows you when you arrive. We visited Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Peak weekend for blooms. And blooming sunflowers for as far as the eye could see!! Sunday, the Farm is open for viewing, but workers and the shed of their products is off duty that day. They do, on Sunday, however, have a cashbox for an honor system of leaving a dollar for every sunflower you opt to cut. Parking and admission are free. The entrance for parking for sunflowers is on new franklin rd. This is an annual event. Exact dates can be found on their Facebook page. It is sooo worth the visit, and, for us, the 3 hour drive from Pittsburgh.

There isn't a large farm or storefront to greet you, just turn off the main road and drive the road to park and start pickin'. I love that the people are friendly, that they provided buckets (although you can bring your own), and they don't try to price-gauge you for every little thing. We picked some strawberries and sugar snap peas, both smaller than what you would be used to at the grocery stores, but packed with so much delicious flavor! The girls had an absolute blast going through the fields, even trying to squeeze in a taste (we had to hawk-eye watch them). I loved feeling like we were supporting a local business, but also what farms should be and what I grew up with (We didn't have to make a reservation, we didn't have to pay for each person, we just paid for what we picked) It's not a huge operation, but it did the job for us.
