I had the pleasure of visiting Gander Airport when my flight from London back to the US had to make an emergency landing en route. We landed in the evening and waited on the aircraft for over an hour while they determined that a) the medical emergency was not serious and b) the mechanical issue could not be fixed quickly.
We were allowed to disembark and go into the terminal, and they did it in the smart way: we weren't processed by Canadian immigration and just stayed in the secure area. As we arrived after regular services had closed, they called airport employees at home to have them come back and open the cafe and gift shop for us 200+ passengers.
Best part... there is free WiFi in the building. Best part for smokers... there's also a smoking area upstairs.
Yes, it's in the middle of nowhere for most of us, but I'm glad to have this airport available for emergencies, and the people were absolutely fantastic and welcoming. This was especially apparent if you read articles about all the planes that landed in Gander on 9/11. http://www.ganderairport.com/911.htm read more
