Located in a beautifully restored 1900s theatre, the Hippodrome seamlessly blends historical charm with modern delights. It's not just a casino, but a full-fledged entertainment destination in the heart of London's vibrant nightlife scene. it's just near to famous Leicester Square. In fact, if coming from Covent Garden, you can't miss this casino. this casino is one of London's coolest places to visit. The Hippodrome has kept itself firmly in the limelight for over a century. Charlie Chaplin graced the stage In its inaugural show in January of 1900! Not a bad start! Along with its vibrant history came many renovations, I've been told. This has allowed the Hippodrome Casino to evolve, preserve its past, and become the icon it's unfurled into today. I don't exactly frequent casinos here in London - but Lola's may set me down that dark path…read more Located in the basement level of the Hippodrome Casino in the heart of the West End, Lola's is like the Hippodromes cooler, sexier, more illicit little sister. Lola herself was real - on their site Hippodrome tell the story of the disappearance of the beautiful chorus girl. Opening at 6pm daily, and running through until the small hours, Lola's features go go dancers in tiger cages (very Vegas), fabulous drinks and an old timey burlesque feeling interior with plenty of lounge seating as well as the to be expected gaming tables. I'm told it's one of few places in London you can play craps. Not sure if that's true. One thing they do have that's a little off the cuff is an old fashioned barber! He says he's fully booked for weeks in advance. It's a great place to get a classy drink, watch the live entertainment (on the hour every hour) or have a little flutter without worrying about curfew. Drinks are consistently priced throughout the Hippodrome and aren't really too pricey, especially given where you are. The bathrooms are fabulous - as you'd expect - with sofas, amazing selfie mirrors and free to use GHD hair straighteners. The ATM is annoying - dispensing a minimum of £100 at a time.

The woman dancing in a cage in fishnets and a bathing suit doesn't offend me (and, in fact, I love…read morethe loud music and illicit feel of the place) but what originally turned me off was that I assumed tables would have a poorer payout. In the US, if you sit in a comparable table with a view of a stage, I would expect that blackjack would pay 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2. I might also expect higher minimum bets. None of this was true and, in fact, I was told that U.K. law would not permit different payout odds at different tables so cheers to that! Honestly the best part was the music and our blackjack table got into a groove because there wasn't a high turnover of players. The upstairs casino is a little less relaxing because people walk in off the street to play a hand or two so it Feels like a bit of a Revolving door upstairs. Also the craps table looked pretty fun for next time!

To put this in context: I lived for 14 years in Las Vegas--so I don't expect much out of small scale venues. What GCRS lacked in size it more than made up for in punch. Walking in, it looked like an itty bitty Palms Casino. Sophisticated, clean, organised. Be aware that with the Groupon you do not get the full menu, so the description of "French, Arabic, Indian and Chinese cuisines" as the selection isn't accurate. Since I came for steak, it didn't matter. It might matter to you. We went for Monday lunch at 1:30pm and were the only ones in the restaurant the whole time. The service was exceptional and everything came out in a timely fashion. We ate leisurely and the next course wasn't presented until we had finished the last. The appetizers: (1) Stilton glazed mushrooms and (1) crispy coated calamari. Exceptional, both dishes. Huge for appetizer portions, hot, crisp, delicious. The mains: (2) 10oz rib-eye steaks, one rare and one well done. Tender, well seasoned, both perfectly cooked. Worth the £3 surcharge per plate. The sauce: (1) Pepper for the well done steak. I don't eat my steak well done and don't like to ruin good steak with gravy...but my friend liked it. £1.95 surcharge. The wine: My friend had two glasses of the Hardys Cabernet/Merlot blend. She said they were excellent and a wonderful value at only £4.40 per 250ml glass. The gaming: We were each given a £5 chip and played roulette. I left with £10 more in my pocket (£9 technically, after tipping the attendant), my friend left with £10 less in hers. We had a really fun time! The total cost: £15 for the Groupon + £16.75 for the wine, sauce, and steak upgrades + £3.25 tip to the waiter (not imposed, just given for great service). I will be back to Grosvenor Casino Russell Square without a voucher and would ABSOLUTELY be willing to pay full price for the meal and casino floor fun. FIVE STARS!

**July 2022: Monday Evening**…read more Three months out and the only available Afternoon Tea reservation during my one week stay in London was Monday at 7:30pm (THREE MONTHS OUT!!). Geesh! Regardless, I decided to take the slot and boy the Ritz London did not disappoint! My friend and I checked in at the Ritz Club Entrance as we were told later on that the original location was undergoing renovations and that the new home for Tea Time would be at the ballroom, a previously private casino where the likes of President Bush Senior and other VIP guests often frequented - so exclusive!!! We walked down two flights of stairs and were greeted for coat check. We then walked past the Amber Room, which was a very very ornate parlor room and then towards the ballroom... my jaw dropped! The walls were covered in such exquisite and lavish gold details, and the high ceilings had such beautiful intricate paintings. There was a three piece orchestra playing beautiful classical musical as well as Disney favorites. This ballroom was so extravagant and luxurious that I really felt as if I was a part of high society! Unlike most teas that I've attend the live entertainment was the focal point of this experience. Yes, patrons did converse among themselves; however, I felt that we were all enjoying a mini concert with tea and biscuits, which I imagine is how afternoon tea was experienced in the past. The service was prompt and exceptional as expected and I loved the wide array of tea selection. The food was standard, but the live music and atmosphere makes this once in a life-time experience well worth the trip out to the UK for me. I believe our server stated that this location would be held here until March 2023, so if you want to step foot into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world now's your chance! FYI: Dress code is extremely strict. All men must wear a jacket and tie, and jeans/sportswear and shorts are not allowed.

However, for this year due to revisions, it was offered in the exclusive Ritz Club. The space was very big and beautifully decorated. A talented pianist during the tea was absolutely lovely. The food and tea were very high quality and fresh. So much so fresh, that the scones were delayed [only issue; they did arrive warm and with a generous amount of clotted cream]. Waiters checked in, in a timely manner. Also, was very kind and amazing, serving tea/food, and offering to take photos. It definitely lived up to the high expectations (traditional, mannerisms, and just old-school British) I had for my first visit to the Ritz.

It was a group package which means you get a buffet meal, a free drink, a lesson in how to play and a free £5 bet for £15. The place was remarkably empty when we arrived at 8pm and once we left, was empty once more. A few people playing slots and the tables and looking despondent. Yeesh. Atlantic City, it ain't. Firstly, they make you register at the door. Meaning, your photo is taken, your passport or ID is scanned and inputted and they want all your personal address and details. Um, creepy! Secondly, the buffet, eugh this was the worst bar food I've ever eaten. Nasty pizza, chips, onion rings, and burgers made of probably not meat. It was like being at a 5 year old's birthday party but with gin and creepiness. Then the bar, they had a Guinness tap set up but it was only for show. The bartender cracked open a can under the bar and poured it into the glass under the tap. Lolz. We can see you! The tables themselves were ok as the croupiers, or whatever they are called, were very friendly and easy going about teaching us to play. You can learn a variety of games and then have a go at the real betting. Good luck!

At the front door, they require that you provide your personal contact information. The girl taking my information was demanding, rude and not very bright. The bar tender who took my order of a vegetable plate gave me a cold shoulder when taking my order. He made me pay approximately 20 pounds for a vegetable platter, sparkling water and a discretionary mandatory tip up front. I paid with my American Express card. However, there is no place to sit around the bar. When I mentioned that fact to him, he responded by saying "sit anywhere and I will find you." I told him I would sit upstairs around the slot machines. I waited 30 minutes. The waiter was no where to be found. So. I started to walk out to find the manager. In doing so, the waiter confronted me and then brought the food to where I was sitting. He gave me no utensils to eat with. In my disbelief, I found the manager, complained about the service and asked for a refund. The manager claimed he could not give me refund on my credit card. So, I asked for cash. He claimed it was against British Law to do so. We civilly argued for 90 more minutes in front of the cashier's cage. Keep in mind this is a Casino. The cashier offered to give me a refund out of the petty cash box. The manager refused. I explained to the manager that I was from the U.S. and that I had thousands of dollars in my wallet that I was prepared to gamble but because of the way I was treated, they lost my business over 20 pound bill. Ultimately, I gave the manager my contact information. Supposedly, the casino will refund my money when they get around to it. I asked the manager for his card and he gave me someone else's card. It was very frustrating. I told the manager that I would complain to American Express that I was ripped off which made no difference whatsoever. Hence, this poor rating. Take your business elsewhere. The entrance/reception is a bit chaotic but it is quick. A touch more customer service wouldn't go a miss in the way of 'Good evening, welcome to Palm Beach Casino' - very basic but sadly missed. Also, you do not need to be a member to enter but yes, membership does have it's priviledges. The bar is sectioned off with high tables and seating and low tables with seating. There is also a DJ. Now the music was very good and adds to the jovial feel here but it is very, very, very loud. If you don't like ringing ears avoid the lower tables because the speakers are near them. The lighter coloured high tables are where you want to perch with your cocktails. There's also light bites on offer just keep in mind, this is a casino and that means bring your wonga, pesos, bucks, quids, euros, pounds or other legal currency. This place is not cheap - something I always like to hear. Now, we are not gamblers by any stretch but went for the Roulette and Blackjack. I grew up on 21 so quite easy to pick up game. The Roulette took me a couple go's and yes, a couple wins to catch on...oh, and win we did! Woo Hoo! The service here was friendly, efficient and welcoming. Kudos to Lucy S. for arranging everything for us and showing us some helpful tips on Blackjack. There are multiple tables so no waiting to get your gambling on and a semi-private poker room (do not venture unless you are caked up like Her Majesty) There are also one-armed bandits (slots) and a restaurant (we didn't eat). This place is gorgeous, fun and well layed out. So, why not a 5 star review...the ladies loo in the bar area is a hillbilly nightmare. Do not use it! Go to the one near the casino.
