I visited Gam Tu Bop before the pandemic and I remembered it being a solid place in Glendale. In my recent visit, they've taken out interior seating. You typically order and take your food togo. Of all the rice balls, hands down, go for the bulgogi. Don't order anything else. I think I gave myself this mental note and forgot about it. This place has been bookmarked for so long, so I'm glad that I finally got to try it (especially on AAPI month!). I ordered thru DoorDash and got 3 items, including the Unagi Rice Ball, Musubi, and Spicy Tuna Rice Roll. I read some reviews beforehand, and most recommended to order a few items to make it a meal. They were right! I basically inhaled these... The Unagi Rice Ball was my fave. It had a good ratio of rice to unagi. The unagi was sweet & savory. Also, the seaweed was packaged separately to prevent it from getting soggy with the rice ball. The Spicy Tuna Roll was delicious and actually not super spicy, but it did have a bit too much rice for me. On the other hand, the Musubi was sweeter than expected and could've used more rice (or less sauce?) as it was falling apart in my hands after I unwrapped it. I'd definitely order from Gam Tu Bop again because they have more rice ball options that I want to try. They work as snacks and can make full meals, and it's always fun to eat food using hands! Out of a lot of the protein or ingredients when I went around at 3:30pm so I could not try any of the rolls. Maybe it was because the order was to-go (since they did not offer a dine-in option) that all the rice balls were just wrapped in plastic wrap and had to attach the seaweed myself. My sister and I shared some onigiri after work. They were yummy and simple and are easily something we could make at home but I still enjoyed them! Good lazy meal or for a snack and because it is mainly rice, is quite filling! It's an Americanized place and the filling doesn't really have a lot of traditional onigiri flavors but the tuna and salmon were still pretty good! kimchi however did not taste fresh or authentic. Made this stop late on our road trip and we caught it right before closing. Luckily we were able to call them while we driving and place our order so that it could be ready by the time we got there. Tried this on a whim and a deep craving for onigiri. I'm hooked now. Everything comes just the right touch of warm so it's pleasant but not too hot to handle. The Nori is crisp and dry because it's in a separate bag from the onigiri. The rolls are all made wrapped in plastic and fun to unroll and roll back up. Best part to me is they use imitation crab, I don't really like real crab and I have issues with how it's cooked ethically so using imitation that's sweeter and wonderful is best to me. This was my second time ordering from here and got the Tomago for my mom who loves this one, the crab and spicy shrimp, chicken teriyaki, and a California hand roll. I will definitely stick to the crab and shrimp alone next time I think, the chicken was good but just not as satisfying as the others. But the chicken is pretty plentiful! Came here to pick up some rice balls on a Saturday for a late lunch. Parking isn't the easiest to be found here and you have to pay for Glendale street parking even if you're just there for a couple minutes. I ordered a variety of the different flavors totaling to 8 rice balls, and waited about 20 to 25 mins or so for my order. The packaging for Togo was nice because they put the seaweed on the side for you so it doesn't get soggy. The price is a little high for the quality of everything in my opinion. The salmon I got was just one big chunk it wasn't broken apart and seasoned/mixed in well. This was the case for some other ones too. Flavors overall wasn't very strong except for the beef one. However, my concerns is in regards to the poor management skills of the business. This store needs new management skills who understand the business and customers. Very good, quick, easy, fresh, and affordable! I fed my family of 4 with $30 after tax. In terms of Gam tu Bop (rice ball/onigiri) we ordered the bulgogi (beef), kimchi, deji bulgogi (spicy pork), teriyaki chicken, tuna, tamago (Japanese style marinated egg omelette). The rice was hot and well seasoned. Everything was seperated from the seaweed, which was roasted to sesame seed oil, to keep it crispy. I was surprised. Ingredients were fresh and warm, inside and out. Everything was well seasoned. The spicy deji bulgogi was actually decently spicy. The tamago had good unami flavor. The kimchi was nicely ripened and had a good seafood flavor to it. The tuna was nice and creamy. My whole family enjoyed, including the kids, who can get picky. The seaweed comes on the side, so you can add it yourself. We also tried a spicy tuna and California roll. They were both creamy and good. The rice is refrigerated and everything is pre packaged in the fancy plastic. You just wrap it up. Very easy to eat,and perfectly sized for our littles. We also tried a spam and egg musubi. I would say this was definitely a lackluster experience. First of all, it's very hard to find with google maps if you're driving there and not local. Second of all, there was absolutely no dine in or restroom use available. And thirdly, the food was not very exciting at all. The menu is pretty small and I often eat meatless, so I tried the mushroom and tofu rice balls, because they were out of kimchi. They say 2-4 rice balls are a serving, and 2 were okay for me. The tofu flavor was okay, but I found the mushroom a little more flavorful. The problem for me is that the rice ratio is so overwhelming, and they don't give complimentary sauces, so it just comes across as bland. I do think wrapping the rice balls in the seaweed paper they give you is the way to go, because it makes slightly less of a mess, and gives it a little more flavor. I normally don't write reviews, but I feel I had to for this. I'm gonna sound like a Karen for doing this but I feel it has to be said. I wanted to get a quick bite on Thursday at around 4:00PM. I walk in and the first thing I see is an employee reprimanding another employee. I wait around for about 3 minutes before I had to leave because my shift was starting soon and it was incredibly awkward to be around. From what I heard, he was being reprimanded for the portion size of what looked like a soup. I didn't catch too many specific details about it, but I don't think it's important enough to mention. The person reprimanding didn't acknowledge me walking in, he kept doing it right in front of me, which made the atmosphere very uncomfortable for me. Now, I don't know if he's a manager or just another cashier, but regardless, it is extremely unprofessional to be reprimanding an employee right in front of a customer. If the matter is that serious, it must be done in private. Sure, it's just a rice ball place, I'm not expecting Michelin star service, but there's a certain level of basic courtesy that's to be expected, and unfortunately it didn't happen this time around. The person who was reprimanding was wearing a bucket hat and a white t-shirt I believe.
