At the top you have 360 views of Appenzell, St. Gallen, Thurgau hills, the Alpstein mountain range, and the extensive Lake Constance region. I recently went to the top with my friend, and at the top there are MANY different hikes that you can start on. We only had a short time so we took a easy 15 minute walk on a easy path through the Wildkirchli Caves. In the caves prehistoric finds have been made and there is a little museum talking about the history of the caves housed in a old hermit dwelling. There were actual hermits that used to inhabit the caves as a place of worship from 1658-1853. At the top there is also a restaurant and guest house with 16 guestrooms. During the winter you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding. Definitely a must if you are in Appenzell and want to enjoy the local beauty. I want to go back when I have more time and can do so more extensive hiking!

The Gondola will take you to 2 stations, half way and the top of the mountain. If you get there early enough you could do both maybe I only had to to go straight up the mountain and walk both side up top. Amazing view of the mountains and mother nature's beauty. The Germans preserve nature so well and I'm very thankful.

I can't hate on the Wankbahn…read more 1. Ok, it's childish - but "WankBahn" is a little funny if you're an English speaker. Even better is the bar at the top called the Wank Haus. 2. It's WAY cheaper than the Zupspitze ascent at €22 pp. The problem with going up the Zugspitze (besides the crazy cost) is that it takes a long time and of course, you can't see the Zugspitze when you're on it! 3. Burg Wank is about 1800m tall, so you get a tremendous view of Zugspitze and the whole local range. Plus if it's cloudy or crappy at higher altitude it my be just fine here. 4. Instead of a big cable car, you get a tiny 4 person car. It's terrifying!!!! But the views are worth it. 5. I think far fewer tourists go up this cable car, so it's likely to be much less crowded at peak times. Today, there were maybe 4-5 people at the peak total. It was my idea to ride a cable car, and I picked the WankBahn so we could see Zugspitze and save some Euros. I'm terrified of heights so imagine my face when we reached the station after a terrifying ascent...only to find that we were just halfway and the second half was WAY steeper. I almost schiesse'd my pants....but we made it safely and took some amazing photos. So, if you're in the area and are looking for something to do - check out the WankBahn!

Pretty and fun!…read more After checking out the nearby castles, we came to Tegelberg and took the Tegelbergbahn up to the restaurant for lunch with a view. It was the middle of the winter so the view was snowy and it was COLD up top! It was easy to buy tickets and we boarded the gondola easily. It did make some kind of scary creaking noises with the ice cracking and shifting, but we made it to the top and back! There were a few skiiers using the gondola to drop in at the top of the mountain Would be fun to see this all through the seasons.

Only 20 people at a time and seem to get crowded late morning. The bathroom is in the cable car building. The tower outside the cable car area is a great scenic view if you don't mind 10flights of stairs. The hikes from this base are quite nice and well marked. I made my way to the schneiderweisen which is a little hotel on top of mountain.
