A pleasant Mediterranean island in Berlin. Great staff, peaceful location, gigantic portions (even…read moreif unlikely to be fresh) with rich tastes. The real attraction of this place is the staff. I haven't checked but they come across as Italians who lived in Germany for some time, offering us a warm welcome and a professional, pleasant service throughout dinner, while speaking a combination of Italian and German (with a good command of English). Their honest recommendations and attention throughout the evening have been of the highest quality. We had two main dishes from the specials menu: (1) sea food (scallops and giant shrimps) with black pasta, covered with a rich and heavy cream. The pasta was good, but a little on the over-cooked end of the spectrum. The sea food itself was good. (2) The other dish was pasta with cheese and truffles: prepared right in front of us with much showmanship (see the photos). My friend was satisfied with the taste. The restaurant is located in the middle of what seems to be a residential area. It was practically empty. The menu is long and diverse so the likelihood of the ingredients being fresh, locally sourced daily from nearby farms fields is pretty low. The portions are massive (think US-sized) using lots of cream - which makes the experience a test for your stomach capacity, less a test for your taste buds.

Dolcini - Spaghetti con Gamberetti - excellent but could use with a lot more seasoning (people in Berlin seem to like their food bland as heck!)

Located near Checkpoint Charlie in the center of Berlin, this very, very small but lovely little Italian restaurant makes amazing, authentic food. If you know a little German it will help you here. If you are a local or can get a reservation, that also would help. Otherwise it might be packed. We got the last table available when we came in. We had the Calamari Fritto app special, which was one of the all time best calamari we've ever had anywhere. We also had the Spaghetti con Gamberetti, which was excellent but could use more aggressive seasoning. People in Germany clearly don't like a lot of seasoning. I had the Penne con manzo e funghi stagionali, which was truly excellent. All the pasta was fresh, all the flavors authentic and appreciated. The only thing weird at all Italian restaurants is this spread they give you which I can only describe as sour cream and chives potato chip dip. I don't get it, but whatever. It's not like you get charged for it. Anyway, if you're in Berlin, put this place on your must try list and go!

We absolutely love fish, but it seems to be a rare commodity in Berlin. When we saw this restaurant…read moredoing Fresh Fish Fridays we decided to get dolled up and pop down for date night. The Yelp reviews ensured our expectations were high, but sadly we left disappointed. Firstly the fresh fish wasn't fish but shellfish: octopus, mussels, scallops and prawns. Thankfully neither of us were allergic. Second, we were told one antipasti would be enough to share: this wasn't really the case as the plate that came out was a portion for one person. The mains were okay but the chef is very heavy handed with the pepper. By the end of the meal we were looking forward to dessert. Our waiter approached us; instead of asking our order he asked if we could move up so three more people could squeeze round our table. It was a bit tight and awkward. We had to ask for the bill three times before it was brought (while smelling our new table-mates garlicky starter) and turned down two offers of limoncello. All in all it was very disappointing. We'd been looking forward to coming here all week but after such an underwhelming meal I doubt we'll be back.

That first meal that I had was probably one of the most perfectly constructed and executed meals I had ever had. That day, we had ordered the appetizer (consisting of some cured meats, cheeses, two jams, and olives), a shrimp gnocchi with burrata, a duck secondi, and a crema catalana all served with the most buttery and delicious homemade bread. The appetizer was a perfect start. Everything was well balanced and flavorful. The duck was well cooked and well seasoned. The Gnocchi was by far the star of the meal. The combination of the perfectly cooked Gnocchi with the flavor packed shrimp sauce controlled by the creamy burrata and fresh shrimp on top...absolutely unbelievable. Finally, the Crema Catalana came out and it just solidified the meal into our brains. After cracking into the thin layer of sugar on top, we arrived at the warm, sweet, creamy custard which was still so amazingly light. Spectacular. Every other time I've come to this place, I haven't had anything even close to that experience. As the menu changes, the pastas since haven't been at the same level...and each time I order the crema catalana, it always comes out a little cold. Thank you La Pecora Nera for giving me one of the best meals of my life. But, consistency is important.
