Seegars Fence Company - Durham - Misaligned fence

    Seegars Fence Company - Durham

    (16 reviews)

Until yesterday, our yard had three sides of a fence. I've no idea why the previous owners didn't…read morechoose to build a fully enclosed four-sided fence (an attempt at archi-design?), but in any case, we found a 3-sided fence to be pretty useless and wanted to close it in so that our dog could patrol the yard, bark at birds, and pee on the herb garden. We brought in three different companies for quotes, and scoffed at the first estimate ($770), only to find that each ensuing estimate :increased:. The third company quoted us at $1100! We'll just do this on our own, we decided. But really, when does one ever wake up in the morning and think: Why, today would be just a grand day to build a fence! And so several months passed and we found ourselves nearing the end of summer and still with no lumber, no circle saw, no post digger, and no cement. We decided to engage the first and cheapest company, but had trouble scheduling with them. So we called up Seegar's, the middle quote. They sent a contract over immediately which we signed and returned. They didn't call us to schedule a date, so we thought we'd let it wait until the following the day. That morning, I walked downstairs for work, and noticed a shirtless man (not my boyfriend) in the backyard. He had equipment laid out, including a post digger, so I safely assumed he was with the fencing company or else a crazy person digging holes in our yard. I called Phil and he said Seegars had not touched base about being there that morning. When I got home, I expected there to be posts cemented in and that they'd return the next day to finish up the project. But lo, the entire fence was in place. So 5 stars for speed, and 4 for pricing and craftsmanship. They did a nice job, but we were a little bewildered by the fact that there was no consultation and that one end of the new fence wound up connecting to the existing fence at a level that's about a foot lower.

1 star. Do not hire Seegars…read more I hired them for two jobs and both went badly in different ways. The first was a small repair at one of my properties which involved replacing a single fence gate door that had snapped off. A simple, quick job. It took them over a month of constant delays to finally complete it. Every week brought a new excuse: the replacement door wasn't loaded onto the truck, the team lead wasn't available, the replacement door hadn't arrived from the warehouse, and so on. Anything to push it back another week. I should have taken the hint and not hired them again. The second job was a partial addition to an existing vinyl privacy fence and adding a double gate at my home in Durham. The install was performed by a single worker over the course of an entire week, that had also been delayed by several weeks. During that week I called the project manager, Landon, to express concerns about the quality of the work as it was happening. I was told by Alan that the workers was having "personal family issues" but was assured by both Landon and Alan that the job would be finished correctly and to my expectations. It was not. The finished gate has two clear, visible defects: the panels do not align at the center, and one side hangs noticeably higher than the other. I was told after the fact that the height difference was due to the grading of my yard -- something that was never communicated to me before the install. The bottom of the gate is already scuffed from dragging on the ground. When I raised these issues, Landon proposed adding a picket at the bottom to help contain my dog (the entire reason I installed the fence) and to see if that would help with the grading issue. He said he would follow up after the work was done to see if the broader gate issues had been addressed. He never followed up. The next contact I received was from Tina in their accounts receivable department, demanding payment in an aggressive and dismissive tone, with no acknowledgment of the unresolved quality issues. When I pushed back with photos, I got two completely contradictory stories from Seegars' own staff. Landon told me on a call he would order a replacement gate to fix it properly, to which I told him to proceed. Tina then sent me an email demanding I explain what it is exactly I wanted from them and told me in writing that the resolution had already been provided and it was just Alan coming out to pick up trash and add a picket. Their internal communication is broken and the customer is the one stuck in the middle. Not wanting to deal with them anymore, I eventually asked for a partial discount on the invoice so I could close the account and hire a different company to remove and reinstall the gate correctly. Landon said he'd take it to his manager. Two weeks of silence, and then they re-sent the original invoice with a collections threat. That was their answer. Save yourself the headache and go with literally anyone else. The Triangle has plenty of reputable, locally-owned fence installers like GT Fence. Get multiple quotes, check reviews carefully (including BBB), and pick anyone but Seegars. If you do hire Seegars anyway: get every detail of the install in writing beforehand, including how grading will affect your gate. Document everything during the install. Do not pay until the work is verifiably correct. And understand that if there is a problem, the company's instinct will be to defend the work rather than fix it. I'll update this review with photos of the replacement gate once another company has installed it correctly, so anyone reading this can see the difference between Seegars' work and what a properly installed gate by an actually professional company looks like.

We are pleased to have contacted the Estrada Brothers to build us a much-needed backyard fence…read more Our initial call was based on customer satisfaction and photos we reviewed. Thankfully, the customer service and quality work they provided us was just as good as their reviews -- and, in our opinion, even better! They listened to our ideas, studied our simple sketch, walked the yard, offered suggestions, measured carefully -- twice -- and gave a detailed estimate. We made a few minor revisions before giving them the go-ahead. They were patient and attentive to the details, transferring thoughts to paper with prices up front. When the time came to begin work, the crew (Uriel and brother, Rolando, along with father, Vincent, and friend of the family, Gerardo), showed up on time and prepared to work -- hard. When met with unexpected events, the crew stayed calm and dedicated to the tasks at hand. When a large and aged, rotting tree collapsed as thick vines were cut away, they brought in a chainsaw and got to work clearing the back quarter of our yard and fence line. The guys built the gates to match the rustic style of the split rail fence and cleaned up nicely. Though the days here hot and conditions were sometimes miserable, the crew remained upbeat and pleasant. It was great having them here and getting to know them. We are totally happy with the finished project.

After getting several quotes, his was the most reasonable so I hired him. He scheduled the repair within days and showed up as agreed. Completed the work quickly and cleaned up afterward. I am very pleased with the work of this young man.
