Our trip to Starke turned into a trip to Gs. We got up early for errands out of town, and finished up before lunch, still pretty early, around 10:30. Here we are, tired, kinda wanting to go home and sleep, kinda hungry... But nothing looked great on a breakfast menu. My better half convinced me it wasn't too early for bbq, and off we went. At new places we like to try samplers or combos and share a bit. So we picked up the bbq charcuterie board, and a beef rib. Mr. G himself came around and talked with us, and at different points we saw he did the same for every table. This led to sampling different bbq sauces, and an experience we can't say we've ever had anywhere else. OUTSTANDING food, delivered by a cheerful, high energy waitress, and an experience topped off by a great conversation with the man himself. We were blown away. When you go, if you're hungry, get the beef rib, and the 'competition' bbq sauce if G has it on his menu yet! It was a match I can totally believe has won competitions. And seriously, a BBQ Charcuterie board? Brilliant. Neat concept, and executed Their new building is going to become everyone's old favorite place in short order. read more

Finally, a place worth eating out in Starke! The service is fast and friendly, and the food is perfect! The fried pickles were served hot; not too much breading; and not too oily. Just perfect. Plenty of vegetarian appetizers and sides for family members that do not eat meat and a catfish option for those that eat seafood. What a pleasant surprise. We found this place by accident and had no idea what to expect. Upon entering, it looked like a down home, comfy-casual place. You order at the front area, receive a number, and find a seat in either the front or back section. You get your own drinks from the drink area station (Similar to how the LOOP does it). The prices were reasonable for BBQ. Smoked turkey was delicious and moist as well as the ribs. Baked beans were good but my favorite is the potato salad because you could taste the herbs. Banana pudding was too runny and not enough bananas. The staff were friendly. The establishment clean. Plenty of parking. read more

I've always passed this place not really paying any attention until I was looking for something to eat when I was in the area. Reading the reviews prior to coming made me more excited to walk through the doors. The moment you walk in, your greeted and treated like family. The customer service from the person taking your order to the server they couldn't be anymore sweeter and personable. In addition to the guest in the restaurant they were so welcoming as well. The whole energy there was great! The beef brisket was tender and tasty! First time having brisket and I loved it! The macaroni and cheese was southern which is the only way I'll eat it. Wasn't a fan of the banana pudding tasted generic. My husband ordered locked and loaded fries which consisted of hot, crispy fries topped with mac and cheese, baked beans, and beef brisket. It was sooo good! Never had that combination on fries. Definitely coming back for my own serving! The ribs were very tender but average on the seasoning. They have three different BBQ sauces that help spice the meat up. Can never get a rib falling off the bone at a restaurant until this place. My husband got the peach cobbler, which was delicious. Literally the best BBQ in Clay County! Ordered the brisket dinner. The brisket is always tender and flavorful. It comes with three sides. We chose green beans, fries, and fried orca. One taste and they'll be a carnivore like you. Find yourself on the Southwestern sIde of Kax and looking for a meal? G's is the place to hit up! It doesn't look like much from the road. Once you walk inside you realize it is a pretty spacious joint. There's even some outdoor seating for nice weather. Everyone that works here is friendly and welcoming. They treat each other like family and welcome you into their "home." Try the Competition Sauce. It's not on the table, but that is some kind of good! The meats are all dry rubbed and served dry. You'd be perfectly happy eating them that way too. There are other sauces on the table but the competition sauce is the way to go. I did note that the dry rub was different for the meats. The carolina vinegar complements the collard greens well. The meat. Oh the meat. I had brisket and ribs. Normally im a one meat kind of guy but when I asked what was good, I was told brisket and ribs. So I opted for the combo. Came with 3 sides (okra, collards, mac). Smoked chicken was tasty and juicy while the mac and cheese was homemade (definitely not the box mac and cheese that some other bbq restaurants serve ). I hate to say that I wasn't very impressed with this restaurant. I was hopeful because of its mom and Pop feel, and the decent reviews. All of the staff were very friendly, we were seated quickly, and we got our food quickly as well. But the food itself was lacking. We got one of their large family dinners with a variety of items. The macaroni and cheese was good and so were the pork ribs. The baked beans were WAY too sweet, and their version of corn bread was disappointingly bland. I went into my visit to G's with high hopes. They'd recently beat my favorite bbq place in a contest. However, I'm still not sure what the fuss is about. The setup is a bit odd. Walking into a big hall - that was quite hot on the day we visited, and trying to read the menu off a super crowded chalkboard was not ideal. Once we ordered, we made our drinks and got a table. Then our food came. And it was all fine. Ribs were good. Brisket was ok. Sides were nothing special - we tried Mac and cheese, collards, fried okra. And the sauces were kinda meh. The only one I thought was ok was the sweet/original. We like mustard sauces typically but this one tasted almost of relish. Might be great on a hotdog. So good ! We fed 10 people for $160 with leftovers for my sons birthday dinner . Waitress also gave us a complimentary sweet tea and tons of bbq sauce while waiting . My faves were the brisket and turkey . I LOVED the green beans, potato salad, and baked beans. Mac n cheese was good but better the second day I think it just needed to "marinate". First time here. I'm tickled at all the 5-Star Reviews. The two ladies I dealt with were nice. One gave me a complimentary sweet tea. Enjoyed the coleslaw, pulled pork, and the pork ribs. Pork ribs actually get 4 1/2 stars. Lean brisket was dry and oddly enough, so was the fatty brisket. I will say that I went at about 6 o'clock but that's no excuse for dry bbq. Baked beans were ok. Some of the pieces of my "fatty" brisket look like burnt ends. And they chopped my fatty brisket up which I didn't ask for. Definitely not impressed with their brisket. And during this COVID situation, I didn't see any gloves or face masks. read more

G's is a total hometown hole in the wall kind of place that has a well earned reputation for great BBQ. I have several friends involved in BBQ businesses or competitions that herald Gs. So I was excited to finally try it. It's rough and rustic and not fancy, exactly as I want my BBQ joint to be. You order at a counter and pay, then grab a seat and they bring it to you. Ours arrived before we could even get our self serve drinks. We had a pulled pork sandwich, my son's favorite. Perfect. And he approved of the sauce choices, with original the favorite. We had beans (great), greens (delish), Mac and cheese (could use a bit of seasoning but creamy and very good). I tried my BBQ favorite, brisket. Sadly for my heart, the more fatty it is the more tender and good, and when asked I usually ask for a mix of lean and not. I wasn't asked and for some reason didn't think to ask, so I ended up with all lean meat which was full of flavor but not as tender as I'd hope.
