I'm still not too enamoured with the sight of bloody pork, but I make an exception for here. The selection in here is pretty wide. It's a butchers, so obviously the main line is meat;mince steak, chicken and veal, but they also do a mean steak pie and really fab ready made stir frys and kebabs with peppers. I've been in here a few times for bits and pieces, and the staff are such lovely and pleasant women. They'll give you advice where needed, eg recipes/seasoning, and they'll tell you the best place to get something they don't provide. I went in and got a bag of 30 small prawns for less than a pound and almost fainted. Less than a pound! Excellent quality as well, so it's not like you're paying less for lesser quality. If you want something big/obscure such as a whole crab, or swordfish loin, they won't have it in store but they can order it in for you, which is great!

I used to despise fish. I would refuse to go into the fishmongers with my mum because the smell made me squeamish, and the sight of prawns on my dinner plate saw me recoiling in horror! As I got older though, my fishy distaste started to lessen, and I began to try new things. It took me until I was 21 to try a prawn, which is actually embarrassing! Ever since I tried it though, I have been hooked. I have always preferred white meats and fish to red meat, so my love for prawns really widened my horizons, and made me try more fish. I can now officially say that I love it! I went to Pisces one afternoon on the way home from work to pick up some king prawns. My friends and I were recreating Come Dine With Me, and I was determined to win with my juicy prawn tempura starter, and I had been told that Pisces was the place to come. The fishmonger was extremely nice, de-veining my prawns for me (I'm still a bit squeamish) and even recommending how I cook them. I left with a bag of around ten large prawns, for a very competitive price of under £9. I think he might have even given me a wee discount! Fantastic shop, don't be afraid to ask for cooking tips either, my prawn tempura turned out brilliantly!

Rice n Spice is a great wee Asian supermarket that is absolutely tiny, but crammed floor to ceiling with anything you could ever need for Asian cooking. From fresh fruit, veg and herbs to dried and packaged spices, there's a small chance you'll leave here empty handed. It's run by friendly guys and I feel like I just robbed the place for only having to pay a fiver for what I just bought; so so cheap! I can foresee my custom being frequent here!

If you dodge the big name though, there are a handful of other good butchers in Motherwell that aren't as expensive but are just as good in my opinion. Adams on Windmillhill Street is the place to be if you are after square sausage! They also do good fish in Chapmans.

Fresh haddock is lovely and much nicer than the supermarkets. Although don't have a huge selection of speciallity fish available at all times you can ask for things to be ordered in. It is in a convenient location just up from the Post Office and there is lots of parking nearby. Staff are knowledgeable and it is often the owner who is in shop so if you need a bit of advise about how best to cook your fish then this is not a problem. Using more often lately as trying to buy from local suppliers more rather than big supermarkets.
