It seems like most of their output is consumed in the local area, and with good reason - the beer is delicious!!! I mean, they've been brewing since 1283 so they must be doing it right. Anyway, on our trip to Germany this spring we made sure to schedule a stop In Donaueschingen to visit. Alas, they weren't open for tours nor was the shop open when we stopped, so the Mister was sad. To make up for it, I ordered him a bunch of gear for his recent birthday. The folks at the brewery were really accommodating and were willing to ship to the US (even though they normally don't deliver outside Europe) for a relatively small shipping up charge. It was a little bit of a pain as they don't take credit cards, so I had to wire the cash. And international shipping is sloooowww (not their fault). It was all worth it in the end though! Just be sure to place orders well ahead of time (think 3-4 weeks to be safe). In short - historic brewery + really nice people + delicious beer + making my husband's birthday present special = highly approved. If you're in the area and can catch a tour, you should definitely do that!

Very friendly brewer and nice atmosphere. For CHF 15 you can get 6 tasters of 125 ml and keep the glass which is quite a great deal. Beers are all very well crafted and well balanced (for example a perfect cream ale), they are mainly american inspired and they don't save on hops.

It gets crowded but you can often find a spot at the bar. If you want to sit in the beer garden, you can swing by the main restaurant to get pretzels. The beer is light, crisp and refreshing. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, choose outdoor if the weather is nice and expect to be social, as Europeans share tables, so don't be a prude! European bikers frequent this restaurant too but they aren't like American ones and completely harmless if not hilarious with their jokes so think nothing of them. The food is amazing, can't go wrong with anything on the menu! Of course, beer paired with the meal is a must and there is plenty to choose from. They will gladly help you in finding a beer you like. There is also a smaller snack shack should a sit down meal not be your thing. The expanded souvenir shop has plenty of items to choose from to remind yourself of the day. There are tours available as well, one self guided and another with a guide. Even without a tour, you will be impressed by the sheer size of the operation and can glean some insight from the large windows that let you peak in. We happened to be there when they were delivering the hops and it's an amazing smell. The grounds are well kept to include an amazing playground for kids. There is a smaller one near the snack shack that is for the toddlers and under BUT if you have a child with any sense of adventure, the larger one is the draw. There is a massive climbing structure, rock climbing wall, bouncing bridge, swinging net thing ... I can't even properly describe the other obstacles/swing/rope things other than you would NEVER see this in America (mostly due to the propensity for lawsuits) but watch your kids and it will be fine. It's always the highlight for my kids and they were perfectly healthy after but tired. We like going each time we are in Grafenhausen; add it to your trip as well.
