I have tried many hairdressers all over Sydney but have never been able to commit to just one. I find most hairdressers pretend to listen to what you have to say and then cut whatever style they are used to. I said no layers, miss. Oh you said no layers? I thought you said four layers. Too late, my bad. You can see my conundrum. Well that was until I was referred to Partners Hair. I made a booking with Joe (sometimes hard to come by) and prepared for the worst. But the moment I arrived ("Would you like some tea, coffee, water infused with strawberries ma'am?") I felt a connection to the place. Joe was wonderful. He was delightfully entertaining and all around chatty. It was like getting a haircut by your best friend. We talked about dancing, partying and our weekend hangovers that we'd been trying to put at bay, babies and boyfriends. I left feeling satisfied and confident in Joe's handiwork. Now I don't go anywhere else. I generally make appointments with Joe but have also tried Wissom, who is equally friendly and just as good with the scissors. They have a loyalty card where every three visits you receive something extra (free treatment, free product or free hair cut) and they send you birthday specials via text message. Once I even received a message for a discount haircut because they noticed I hadn't been in awhile (I'm lazy like that). If that is not true customer service, I don't know what is.

When it's time, it's TIME. Most recently, I found myself with hair reminiscent of the homeless lady that patrols Glebe Point Road, and so I set out to find someone to remedy it. A short Google search later, I discovered the nearby Partners Hair Workshop and BAM, booked for that afternoon. So first of all, they were doing a spectacular 30% off for first time customers, free deep conditioning special. What's more, I was offered a glass of white while I sat down for my consultation (which turned into 2, I mean, right?). My hairdresser Max listened closely to what I was after, gave some good input and got to work chopping. He worked quickly and amused me all the while with his stories of big nights out on Oxford St. As I slurped the last of my wine, he went to town with the blow dryer and about 5 round brushes to achieve the "bouncy" look. At the end of my appointment I ended up with a kickass haircut and a new possible best friend. It just took one wash to bring my 80s prom queen-esque styling into the current decade but I must admit, the cut was a great one- well shaped, good layering and the perfect amount of fringe. I called Sasuke Hair Studio and they were able to accommodate me almost immediately- told me to come in in an hour! My flight was leaving to go back to America that night so I was very grateful they could get me in so quickly! I walked there from my hotel in downtown Sydney. It was only $45 for a deep conditioning treatment. Worth absolutely every penny. My hair smelled so good and came out absolutely amazing. It was sooo relaxing. The staff is absolutely wonderful. Thankfully this annual chop my sister had visited a local salon using a Scoopon. On the way out they gave her a $50 gift voucher for next time she visited. Sister promptly gave it to me saying she wouldn't go back. Sister's experience was somewhat different to mine. Sister said the staff and ambiance was cold and uninviting. The colour and cut she got was good she just didn't feel that 'treat' feeling she gets usually from other hairdressers (said sister by the way gets her hair done every 6 weeks). I on the other hand quite enjoyed my experience. I walked off the street to hopefully book an appointment for that day and though they were busy Serena (head hair designer) worked around the schedule to fit me in with little more than a 10 minute wait. Not only that but she let me use the voucher and gave it back to me when I left. She also cut my hair which I was very happy with - I walked in looking like I'd not cut my hair in a year and walked out looking like it had never look rejected. The staff seemed friendly enough to me. There wasn't much chatter like most salons but I like laying back with my eyes closed whist the hair magicians do their wash, cut and blow magic. If you want to let go of the day, without feeling the need to natter Via Spiga is a good hairdressers to visit. The salon uses Jeval Hair Colour, Brocato Hair Car and Nak Hair Care. The good thing about these choices are the paraben free, sulphate free and plant based ingredients. Compared to a lot of salons that use chemical heavy dyes and shampoo at Via Spiga you know you get a hair bath that doesn't just leave your hair feeling soft and beautiful but also natural. My colour had faded slightly, so the root colour was adjusted accordingly. The result? A perfect match! Thank you Sarah. I had my second (current colour) done a fortnight ago, and I simply could not be happier with it. I was once again with the ever-so-talented Kevin and wanted to go a darker, more vibrant shade of copper. On my first visit with Kevin, we chose a more subdued copper so that I could 'dip my toe' into being a redhead. Well, I love it. We went through some photos to get an idea of what I wanted. Kevin advised me that some of the pictures I had were definitely a darker copper, but they wouldn't provide the vibrancy I was after, so we chose a picture with a definite ginger/copper vibrancy. The end result is exactly the colour I had envisaged but couldn't quite articulate/ find examples of. And I absolutely. love it. Two weeks on and it's still bright, vibrant and shiny, and just like the last colour (see below review) I get daily compliments and get stopped in the street about it. I have difficult hair - it's very fine, curly (but not a good curl. The girls know what I mean by that!) and a boring brown colour. As a result, over the years Jules has helped me explored colours, cuts, straightening processes, better curls and has talked me out of doing things that would be very wrong for me - like platinum blonde. All I can say is that if you are contemplating changing hairdressers and are looking for something long term give Lily Jackson a go. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
