Every July we come to Montreal to visit my wife's relatives, and take an excursion to Quebec City. Last year we stopped at Trois-Rivières for the tour of churches including the full Ursulines convent tour and loved it so we are repeating a stop at this midpoint city between MTL and QC. The drive takes about 2.5 hours so a stop is good. Last year this restaurant was closed on the day we traveled but this year they were open. My son (10), stepson (23), wife and I had an excellent breakfast. The food is delicious, it tastes like they clean the grill regularly and don't use too much grease, and the portions are large. The short answer here is that you must come to this fun, comic book-themed diner, particularly with family. My wife and I think it's perfect and the children are so happy. My husband went in, and not speaking French I had picked out two pizzas from their advertisements. However, when he came back there was anchovies on his peperoni pizza. He was flustered because no one spoke English, and they kept on asking him questions in French about what he wanted on the two pizzas that he picked out. This is frustrating. When I posted it on Facebook, many people told me "this is how they mess with the English speakers." I am not sure if that is the case exactly, but when I have travelled extensively (30+ countries) there are many times that I have pointed at the menu and the person...surprise...got what I pointed for on the menu. Luckily, none of us are too picky (and by this point so hungry) that we just picked it off. However, it was annoying. And it is too bad, because actually the pizza was really good...lots of lovely cheese. The poutine was good as well. Can't recommend this place, but if you are stuck...don't answer yes to any of the things they are asking you.

This started me on a long road of poutine connoisseurship, which has led me across the province and several northern US states trying to find the same or better. So I returned after 8+ years to see, after so many poutines under my belt, with three poutines already in my belly from this day alone (and two more from last night), how does it hold up? Have I since found better and better, relegating this to mediocre? Or does it stand the test of time? To find out, I had to get out at a new interchange - it used to be right along the Autoroute - and come back into the same front entrance, sit down at the same lunch counter seats, and order the same poutine. To my surprise, it was the same as I remember - excellent. Despite all the competition, and despite finding the unquestioned best poutine in the world at Chez Ben in Granby, this is still up among the elites, and certainly the top in Becancour. The sauce was dark and rich, the fries were perfectly done, the curds squeaked plenty. I am so glad my fond memories weren't let down by the revisit. If you're heading between Québec City and Vermont, pull off the highway and give this a try. I did find the Sandwich bread a little dry and powdery for my liking but the filling inside was OK. I really enjoyed eating the St-Hubert poutine. It was standard poutine with a glazing of sweet sauce (I think it was cranberry or something similar).
