Trois-Rivieres is the midpoint, more or less, on the highway between Montreal and Quebec City, so you'll either be buying fuel or be hungry. This small downtown has a main drag, Rue des Forges, which has obviously gone through a small renaissance and has some trendier eateries as well as nicely finished renditions of McDonald's and Subway. However, Bravo, a few streets over, is more like a diner. Not only that, being toward a less redeveloped area, free parking is more readily found. I've eaten here a couple of times. The portions are nicely sized! I had no problem finishing the entrees and the sides. There is a bar, but I went with hot tea, because the weather was turning cool. Ever been in a small town you like, and don't know why you like it? Trois-Rivieres is such a town for me. It's on the Saint Lawrence River, has a port, a small downtown, old churches, a gritty industrial section, the topography slowly climbs upward as you go inland from the river, and one senses that there is a lot of history there. And this little "locals only" (not really) pizza place/diner fits right into the equation.

So I returned after 8+ years to see, after so many poutines under my belt, with three poutines already in my belly from this day alone (and two more from last night), how does it hold up? Have I since found better and better, relegating this to mediocre? Or does it stand the test of time? To find out, I had to get out at a new interchange - it used to be right along the Autoroute - and come back into the same front entrance, sit down at the same lunch counter seats, and order the same poutine. To my surprise, it was the same as I remember - excellent. Despite all the competition, and despite finding the unquestioned best poutine in the world at Chez Ben in Granby, this is still up among the elites, and certainly the top in Becancour. The sauce was dark and rich, the fries were perfectly done, the curds squeaked plenty. I am so glad my fond memories weren't let down by the revisit. If you're heading between Québec City and Vermont, pull off the highway and give this a try. I did find the Sandwich bread a little dry and powdery for my liking but the filling inside was OK. I really enjoyed eating the St-Hubert poutine. It was standard poutine with a glazing of sweet sauce (I think it was cranberry or something similar).
