My favorite brewery in NC. So glad I live close by. Never had a bad experience and the service is always good. More importantly, the beers are inventitive and they change things up all the time. This way, you will always get to try something new; in most cases they are good. Their IPA is usually decent-to-good, and evvery now and then, mind-blowing wow. I want to love Fullsteam. I really do. They have been around for a while, are good neighbors that support local causes and the local economy, have a female lead-brewer, etc. That said, Fullsteam is hit-or-miss, a mixed bag, and other ways to say "meh." Their beer is sometimes good, sometimes not good. Occasionally, it's excellent, like Eleven Eight, a hazy and juicy IPA that came out in the summer of 2019. The follow-up, Twelve Four, wasn't as memorable. Their Southern Basil is great, perfect for drinking in warm weather, while Humidity, Rocket Science, and Paycheck -- three of their staple beers -- are just OK. The brewery itself is high-ceilinged and loud inside. If you want to have a conversation, go further in and around the corner, against the brick wall facing the bar. On our Thursday afternoon visit, our bartender mixed up our food order because she couldn't hear us (her admission). More mixed-bag examples: the pimento cheese platter was tasty and attractively presented (good) and there was a cockroach on the wall right above our table (ick). I don't understand why a pint of their 1807 Chestnut Lager was $12 (see photo [!]), especially when a four-pack of the same in tall cans costs $10 in local stores. It's really not that special to start with, but why such a crazy price discrepancy? Upon leaving, we wanted to buy a bottle or two of Brett Lager to take home but were told that the bottles in the cooler behind the bar were only for consumption on site. Gotta love a brewery with plenty of seating and games. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a late Friday afternoon. Not busy at all. There were actually a few people remotely working here. We played a bunch of ping pong and discovered a love for the game Exploding Kittens. I loved the decor inside and they also serve my boyfriend's favorite beer, Coffee is for Closers. I had Beasley's and it was good...pretty typical wheat beer. We did not eat here but saw a table that had some really fancy looking fries. With my greatly advancing age, I am no longer able to withstand strong drink (IT MAKES MY HEAD FEEL FLOATY) as I may once have. One of the super great things about Fullsteam is that for $2, you can get a half-pint of REALLY good beer that might have been made from basil, or sweet potatoes, or I SWEAR TO ERIS Moon Pies. There are only two things that hold me back from awarding it a full five stars (and for the beer alone, it is certainly worth that many stars): the OVERWHELMINGLY FARTY aroma of hops that permeates the inside, and the fact that the main seating area is pretty much an oven during the summer due to IT IS NOT AIR CONDITIONED. However, the bar area (which also has plenty of chairs and dry-erase countertops you can graffiti all over) is nice and cool, though really loud when there are a buncha people all up in there. Regardless, the outdoor patio at the front of the building is a great place to sit and have a beer. And there are usually food trucks within squirting distance of said patio. (Did he just say "squirting"?) There is also an array of SCIENCE SWITCHES on one wall that probably kill superpositioned kittens, a table through which one might experience all the violence that is ping pong, and A BAYWATCH PINBALL MACHINE. This place gets all my beer money, forever. EDIT: In light of the proprietor's comments, I am caving to the INSANE PRESSURE and upping this place's star rating to an eye-melting FIVE. Because, in retrospect, this is really one of my favorite places in Durham. All the bartenders have always been really friendly when I visited, and I can't underscore enough how good the beer is. For example, I *hate* IPAs, but I totally love the IPA they make here. And perhaps I am willing to concede that "redolent" would be a better word choice than "farty". On a crazy costumed bar crawl through Durham last night, I found myself near-drunkenly slurring (after stop #3, in my defense!) that we simply could not pass up a pint at Fullsteam before concluding the crawl at Motorco. I had some yelpers in attendance from Raleigh and wanted to make sure they knew what was up. (Who dat? Durham dat.) This brewery has been on my to-try list for a while, so I was delighted to check off a food truck AND brewery on my impulse visit to Durham! After attaining two stools at the crowded bar, I eagerly studied the chalkboard menu on the wall. The bartenders were amazingly friendly and attentive. However, I got slightly irked when the bearded bartender suspiciously studied my boyfriend and I's ID cards, while glancing back and forth. Argh, just wave my ID in the light and watch the plane fly across! I started off with a pint of Hogwash (hickory-smoked brown porter) and my boyfriend ordered a pint of Beasley's Honey White. Let's just say, we ended up switching. After suffering through a taste of Rogue's Voodoo, I vowed to myself that I would never drink another smoked ale. Well, I must have had a lapse in memory. No fear -- I was lucky to pawn my unwanted beer on to my all-too-willing boyfriend. The Beasley's Honey White was absolutely delightful and went down easy. As I sipped, I doodled on the white-board strip that runs across the bar surface -- so neat! Next, we tried the Working Man's Lunch and Rocket Science. I'm not fan of hoppy beers, so I let my boyfriend enjoy Rocket Science. As for Working Man's Lunch, I was in brewsky love. It truly did taste like a chocolate-banana flavored Moon Pie! My only wish was to eat one while I drank this beer! There's a "secret" brew on tap: "Fruitcake." You can only order an 8oz glass (it's 9.5% ABV), but it's sooooo worth it. It tastes exactly like this infamous cake, but so much better. Sweet, but strong. I definitely could drink a six-pack of these. All and all, this is the best brewery I've been to in the RTP! Ample seating, a long bar, great interior design, a slew of amazing beers, and NOMS! What I love about Fullsteam is that their beer descriptions are accurate. For once, the taste parallels what's written on the wall -- and this is not common for other breweries in the area. I also have a huge design *crush* on their typography and logos. Yes Fullsteam, us designers appreciate your commendable design choices (interior and graphics). Fullsteam gets super brewery "cool points" for serving food alongside their beer. It is only recently that I am doing brewery tours, attending untapping/casking parties, even has a top 5 favorite beers list! So what make Fullsteam one of my top choices, even though it is clearly across a stretch of I-40 from me in D-town? Innovation and consistency. It's really weird to put those two words together, since they are mostly mutually exclusive. But that's how Fullsteam looks and treats its beers; they are very set in their principle of keeping a consistently high quality, and they always looking for new ways to bring new flavors or local/regional ingredients into their brews. Seriously, everyone casked wet fresh hops before, but who would have thought about brewing with fresh basil?! Another perk of choosing Fullsteam for hangout and a pine or pitcher is the awesome food trucks that usually sit on Rigsbee in the area between here and Motorco, you can get Korean BBQ, grilled cheese, Chinese dumplings, gourmet ice cream and coffee. I recently found through its Twitter feed, that Fullsteam does a "Drinks with Fullsteam" event, 3rd Tuesday of every month; They invite 20 people to sit down with a pint and the brewery staff to talk shop, each session will focus on a different aspect of beer-making. Plow to Pint Beer for the Beautiful South.... Fullsteam Brewery, I can't' wait for it to open this Spring. I did have a chance to sample some of their beers at the Backyard Beer Festival in October. The festival brought together several area home brewers, and everyone had the chance to try some of what's to come from Fullsteam, I loved the Sweet Potato Beer. What I like most about Fullsteam, is their commitement to using local, seasonal ingredients and producing distinctive flavors of the South...how lucky are we! Their Mission: to create a distinctly Southern beer style using local farmed goods, heirloom grains, and Southern botanicals. Adventurous, locally sourced beers with a flair for the obscure. These easy drinking beers are not going to be a favorite of the IPA crowd for sure, at least for now, but not being a hops junkie, I love them. The Fullsteam Brewery is an indoor beer garden, outfitted with some colossal fans that cannot compete with the heat, so dress appropriately or come in the evening. The winter should be fabulous! This is my favorite brewery in the Triangle . Not only does their location and brewery have a great vintage style, but they have a wonderful assortment of beers on hand focusing on a range of local ingredients. I randomly found myself in downtown Durham following the girlfriend to an awesome food truck. After, we discovered we were right next to Fullsteam and didn't miss a beat. Inside, Fullsteam had a collection of vendors selling their various wares to patrons wandering around. In the next room was the bar and we quickly found a spot and started ordering. It was one of those occasions when you think you'll just have one beer, so you don't open a tab. Then after the first drink, you want to try the next one since the last was so damn good, the music is warping time and it's turning into an unforgettable moment. Before you know it, you've tried everything on the chalkboard and have 8 separate receipts to show for it. The bartenders seem to take pride in how irresistible their beers are. We were fortunate to stay long enough to listen to a couple customers ordering a very secret batch of Fruitcake beer. We found out they only serve it on a limited basis and we quickly got our 8 ounce fix. It had quite a punch due to its high gravity, but was delicious. I can't pick a favorite of all their main staples, but you cannot go wrong with anything Fullsteam creates. I came here twice and on both occasions things were a bit frenetic for me as I had to rush through my beers thanks to a tight schedule or an uncomfortable baby. I wish I could have spent more time here catching a live show, playing board games in the wide-open biergarten area and slowly sipping some brewskis. As things stand, the atmosphere here is cool, particularly with the happening street outside with lots of food trucks, restaurants and bars within a fifteen second walk. The majority of the seating is in a high-ceilinged hangar-like space with no air conditioning, so I stayed in the enclosed area where the taps are, which is a good way to deal with a flight of beers and stay cool. I liked the beer holder for my flight of beers, which was shaped like the state of North Carolina, and wish I could have taken the thing home. That's a nice touch. Now for the beer. Every beer here was good (3.5/5), with the Hogwash smoked beer and the Rocket Science IPA (which I had off-site from a bottle) being the two that impressed me most (4/5 for each). I found the lineup to be interesting for its inclusion of a sweet potato lager, a rye Abbey beer, and the smoked beer, but still to be on the conservative side of what you see brewery's around the US doing nowadays. There were no sours, no big imperial beers, and nothing that really knocked my socks off. Still, a good core lineup is important and Fullsteam has that. Plus a great atmosphere. It's a good place and likely a go-to for me if I lived in Durham. One important thing to note: There are no outside growler fills here. That's always a bummer but not the brewery's fault. read more

I was across the street at Parts & Labor and partner really wanted to check out this brewery. They open at 4 and we waited patiently for their doors to open. It was worth the wait. There are a few picnic benches right outside, but when you walk inside, there are vintage arcade games, foosball, and ping pong. Behind a wall of meters is more space and vintage board games. The back area is where the magic is made. Off to the right is the entrance to more patio space. Off to the right, behind closed doors, is the air-conditioned bar. We had a great time trying out flights and tasters while playing Scrabble. They serve their flights in a wooden board in the shape of the state. A massive downpour occurred and people came together to shut the front doors and calm the dogs. We put in a few quarters for a ping pong ball stamped with the brewery's logo and went for a few rounds. Great spacious atmosphere, friendly people, nice bartenders. Accepts credit cards. I live in Los Angeles which has a great microbrew culture. It's only recently I had the opportunity to visit Fullsteam during my recent trip to Durham. I focused on the two beers that the bartender said were his favorite: Fullsteam Southern Lager and Rocket Science IPA. They were both very good beers. I had a sample of the El Toro Cream Ale. Since the Southern Lager and Rocket Science IPA had such delicious finishes, I was reluctant to try Erin's Sour Mash and Fullsteam Hogwash Smoke Beer. Now, I'm a little disappointed that I didn't as it may be some time before I get to try them again! The space is also supercool with a great performance space for bands. read more

Awesome brewery! I am a very picky beer person, but I love Fullsteam's brews. They have great light beer options, which I really appreciate. For the past couple of months they have had this Girl Scout cookie and beer pairing flight, which I had been dying to try after seeing a ton of pictures online. It did not disappoint! All the beers were fairly mild tasting, so I think it would great for anyone to try. It was also very cool that they served it on a NC shaped wooden flight! There's a very fun and open vibe inside. They have a massive seating area with everything from two-person tables to row tables for big groups. It's fun to come here for events or just to hang out. I love this place.... after having gone now 5-6 times and purchasing many a growler at Sam's on the way home, it is one of my favorite breweries in the area. I love the awkwardly family friendly vibe of the brewery itself and the option of a tasty half pint vs a full pour. Hooks under the bar for purses, quick friendly service at the bar, and the food truck availability are reasons that make Fullsteam my after work beer destination! Oh, and of course the southern pride, sometimes seasonal ingredients in their beer is a bonus! Fullsteam's Locals Night was a success in my book except for the fact that we couldn't try their beer yet! Gahhh, I'm impatient for August 13th. They're using locally grown basil in their beer....so interesting, I can't stand the wait. The Locals Night drew in a huge and very diverse crowd from all over the Triangle. A new Indian restaurant in Chapel Hill catered the event (didn't try the food, but it looked good), and LoneRider Brewery graciously supplied their Sweet Josie Brown and Peacemaker pale ale to those of us feeling a little thirsty for a brewski. Fullsteam successfully mixes modern adornments with back-woods decor. They had picnic tables made out of typical 2x4s and then modern comic strips and sculptures on the walls. Also, Bart and Homer Simpson watch over all the action in the brewery and are the mascots...glad the beer has their approval! I took a tour through the small factory and generally learned how the beer was made. It was hard to hear due to a punkishly dressed marching band playing on the other side of the glass walls, but I got the gist. Now, I just have to wait another month and a half until I can finally taste this new beer that I've heard so much about. Gahhh...too long! read more

Pros: Great cozy yet open ambiance, good beer (for a local brewery), ping pong, arcade games, board games, trivia night, often host events, dog friendly, clean bathrooms Cons: No food served (though food trucks are outside), No liquor or wine Few places in the triangle understand their audience better than Fullsteam. The open, industrial, vaguely hipster, vaguely foodie (despite having no food) vibe this place exudes is kinda uncanny. Hipsters living off their parents' hard work and young professionals just discovering the joys of security deposits and overdraft fees will feel equally at home in what has essentially become a Durham staple. The cafeteria style seating combined with the cavernous construction can cause this place to become pretty loud during peak hours, but conversations are overall fairly easy to conduct without busting out your best Lil Jon impression. Now for the beer. This is where I have to be the contrarian. Compared to the whole panoply of options in the Triangle, especially with godsends like Bottle Revolution and Sams Quik Shop their beer is not phenomenal. Easily a solid 7, but to my mind nothing to write home about. For local breweries sure, almost certainly one of the best, but in the grand scheme of beer they are the Cracker Barrel. If you want food you have only to walk outside and grab something from the nearest food truck. Typically American Meltdown, Chirba Chirba or Kokyu. This isn't really a deal breaker as you can bring the food into Fullsteam and eat with impunity, but you do sacrifice consistency for novelty/variability, if that's something that bothers you. Bottom Line: At this point Fullsteam is an icon and you cannot truly call yourself a Durhamite until you've checked it out. read more

It has been awesome seeing Fullsteam "grow up" over the past couple years since they first opened their doors. Now that I've recently relocated even further South, I miss my old neighborhood bars and Fullsteam was certainly one of them. Oddly enough, I'm not the biggest fan of their brews. Don't get me wrong, many are decent at minimum and some are downright solid. However, I have had quite a few that didn't really do it for me. Again, please note that I was more than happy even when I was drinking the less than stellar (in my amateur book) offerings. Regardless, I love how innovative and experimental they are as they are always coming up with new and exciting hop laced beverages. I also am all on board with their philosophy of buying and supporting local. Major points there! What really sets Fullsteam apart is the community vibe that lives here. I think it's pretty safe to say that the spirit of Durham is exemplified within the walls of Fullsteam. Oh, those walls are pretty cool, too, with a very spacious and open design, tons of picnic tables out front and inside, corn hole along the side of the building, bar games, and usually more dogs than you can count. They are always holding/hosting numerous cool events here, food trucks are pretty much always parked out front, and the Fullsteam Run just has to be Bull City Running Co's most popular and well attended weekly group run. Yup, the peeps at Fullsteam knew what they were doing when they envisioned this spot. read more

Had a great time at this brewery. I'm not a beer fan, unfortunately no matter how many times I try beer, but the group I went with are and they enjoyed the many choices available. Specifically, Paycheck - Pilsner and Bananas Foster - stout. I know several had IPAs but can't recall names, but they were all liked. They have games you can play, or we brought our own. They apparently have some snack foods and I heard great things about the deviled eggs, but the kitchen was closed when we went. So disappointed! I'll be back to try them though. Now for someone who doesn't like beer, they do have nonalcoholic beverages, wine and ciders. read more

Full Steam Ahead!!!! I love this place. This week marked my third visit there. Fullsteam never disappoints. When you walk in, you smell the hoppy and grainy fragrance of beer ingredients. The bar area always boasts a friendly, laid-back, and fun crowd. This would be a great place to meet your future spouse. (Well, at least *my* future spouse: laid-back, fun, and loves great beer.....what else is there, really?) Their beers are creative and they always taste very fresh. I've had the Working Man's Lunch millions of times. It is kind of the go-to at Fullsteam. Modeled after a moon-pie, it has a unique taste to it, but not too off-the-wall, as far as beer goes. I also enjoy the Hogwash, but it is certainly an acquired taste. Beer that tastes like bacon is unique, but you can't exactly pound one down after another. It has this sort of "heavy" taste and after the first one, you have to maybe follow it up with something a little lighter. There is a stage here, but I've never actually seen a band perform. I told my friend who hosts trivia that this would be a great venue to start up his trivia show on....say, like a Tuesday night, when it's quiet there. I bet he'd draw a crowd, as I know he's got a following. There is also a ping-pong table here and video games. It's a little cold in this room and reminds me of a garage, but that doesn't bother me. In fact, I enjoy the ambiance. So if you want to patronize a spot with fun people, great beer, and a chill ambiance and more importantly, if you wish to let OFF some steam, might I recommend Fullsteam. read more

A quick update to talk food supply. Tamales from Dos Perros (rotating variety, usually includes a meat and a veg, $3.50 for one, $6 for two) are a great addition. If I'm hungry and am too lazy to do anything about it, that's my jam. They're not terribly filling so go for two as a meal. And now let's talk about the savory cookies, the star of my show, which are carried by Fullsteam but created by South Durham Confection Company. Oh. Em. Gee. The blue cheese & rosemary? Working on a bag now, don't expect leftovers. $5 a bag has 10 of em in it (think the size of a thick Lorna Doone). Cranberries and walnuts round out the taste and keep it cookie like, with a heavy blue (er, bleu! bleu!) cheese kick. Those cookies are created for beer pairings (what an awesome idea!). The bleu ones really work well with the Fullsteam hoppy beer er um, "IPA." (I'm a West Coast IPA person so I rejected the Fullsteam version. These cookies made me love the Fullsteam kind, but mostly in this combination, and only if I tell myself it's delicious hoppy beer, not a strange IPA.) Also, check out the new table in the corner by the bar. It's a tree stump! Lovez it! Oh Fullsteam, your innovation makes me swoon. An incredibly long list of beers and a full kitchen, what more could one want! I just wish the place had A/C or more fans to keep the place cooler on the hot days. The place was incredibly crowded on a Saturday night, but it wasn't hard to place an order or close your tab. We ended up getting a flight of beer (the raspberry ale is amazing!!), and Jambalaya (amazing also!!). Will be back to try more since they are constantly rotating their beers on tap! read more

One of my favorite breweries I've ever been to!! Their Paw Paw beer was one of my favorite beers I've very tasted. I also loved the honey brew and both basil ones. Who knew beer with basil was incredible? The atmosphere is lively and fun. Many people brought their dogs, groups were playing board games, everyone seemed to be having a great time. They had over 40 board games to choose from, so I selected settlers of catan and had a great time enjoying a flight while playing. They also have a ping pong table, wide screens, and retro arcade games! I wish I lived in Durham so I could visit this brewery every weekend. It was incredible! read more

Such an awesome brewery. While there is no tour you can look through the glass walls from the main room into the brewery area. Fullsteam is a small operation so you can pretty much see all of their equipment and tanks. Good enough! The main room is enormous with tables, a set up for live music, jukebox, ping pong, darts, and a separate section for the bar. The bar is big, clean, and modern. The bartender was really cool, describing the beers to us. There are several beers on tap which you can sample or buy in a half pint or pint. Cool options! This is a great stop to have a pint, play some darts, listen to music, and hang out. If I lived around here I would be a regular for sure! read more

Sean Wilson from Fullsteam happened to be one of our panelists for ConvergeSouth and he brought us some growlers of their beer. What's great is that I was going to try some and Lauren P.(another reviewer) told me to give Carver a shot if I ever liked Newcastle. Apparently Carver was made from sweet potato. Wow. Quintessential local hangout is located on a fun block a short distance from downtown Durham. There are usually food trucks outside, so the food options vary but that's part of the fun. Inside, it's an open space with long picnic tables so you'll be sitting with other groups. There's a giant propeller fan hanging over the center which definitely keeps the air circulating. The staff pulls pints quickly and they're typically very friendly. Dogs are allowed and people take advantage, so if you're pooch-averse, then stay away. Fullsteam is a very casual, it-is-what-it-is kind of place, but it gets an extra star from me because I was here when Lehigh beat Duke in the NCAA tournament. This place is really neat! I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It is a redone garage with a huge fan that blows fresh air. There are a few different rooms, one with the bar, and a few others with picnic tables. I loved that you could check out board games to play from the bar. They also had darts which was popular. They had a huge beer selection! They also served a good amount of food that looked and smelled amazing, but I didn't eat anything (on my list for next time!). I sampled a beer flight (you pick any 5 beers from their menu) and it came in an awesome NC shaped tasting board. My favorites were the sweet potato ale and the honey white! read more
