Who knew that Phoenix was so full of art. This sculpture gives me a Rocky statue kind of vibe. It is the work of Treavor Southey, who was commissioned to do the piece by the Trammel Crow Company for the One Renaissance Square tower. It depicts a man, in all of his glory, (yes, full Monty), with his right foot planted and bearing most of his weight. His left leg is slightly off the ground and his arms are outstretched over his head as if he is reaching high, hence the title of the piece. It was given the nickname of Bruce by locals.
The bronze statue stands 9 feet, is very detailed, and was made in 1987. In 2019, the statue was relocated to its current location after the Renaissance began renovations to the exterior of the building and was given to the Downtown Phoenix Partnership. Unfortunately, the statue's original marble base, which had a nice poem inscribed, did not survive the move. Now it has a smaller base with a brass plaque with the basic information on the sculpture.
Parking here to get a closer look is relatively simple. There is metered street parking in front of and on the street adjacent to the sculpture. Anyway, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. read more
