Rose Concrete handled all of the paperwork electronically, copying me on every email to the city. As soon as we had Notice to Proceed, the crew was onsite, and they got the work done in one day (plus a couple of days for the concrete to dry). The new sidewalk looks great, and it's perfectly aligned with the surrounding sidewalk and parkway. My parkway is paved with bricks, and the crew did a great job of putting that back together. What impressed me is that Dean and Robert took both and made them better, using their real knowledge of how concrete works. The control joints are placed right, they put in real drainage with actual drains and grading built throughout, and it looks clean and classy without being overdone. Flatwork around the entire house, driveway, front yard, backyard, both sides, fencing, gates. Did they get everything perfect on the first pass? Almost. What separates them is that when something was off, they owned it completely. No excuses, no pushback, just fixed. They paid attention to details that other contractors I quoted either missed entirely or only caught after I nudged them. Dean caught everything without me saying a word. Every day at the end of their shift they cleaned up and secured the site, even when it wasn't convenient. Robert ran a tight field operation and cared about every detail like his reputation depended on it. I have a young kid at home and that told me everything about who these guys are. I had my own engineer come out and review the work on-site. He looked around and said, unprompted, "You've got a great crew here." Engineers don't hand out compliments. That meant something. We had a new front wall, stairs and patio poured from a set of plans an architect drew up 3 years ago. James interpreted the plans, worked as a general contractor managing the concrete work, plumbing, fencing and landscape. When there were problems or questions James always had solutions and found ways to save money in some of the design elements so we could use it in others. And after it was done and we paid up, James' agents Luis and Sid caught me at home to ask if everything had turned out the way we expected. I'm sure they came by other times when I wasn't home to check things out. If I were to make any changes I'd probably reduce the number of lights we installed and I would have eliminated the "topcast" finish on the driveway so it would be more smooth and industrial. I think Ann would have liked a concrete color that was a little less pink. But we were new to this type of design and James helped us with our ideas like the professional he is. I'm really pleased to recommend James for your upcoming projects: just drive by and look at mine. (I'll post a few pics for you to see.)

That said, the job would have gone quicker if they had worked more than just a few hours each day. My problem was with the company itself. I hired them because of the generally good posted reviews. Most of the reviews mentioned that Mr. Klein himself was involved with doing and/or supervising the work being done. Not so in my case. The initial response from Yelp after I requested a quote I assume was from Mr. Klein. I was told he was unable to come out for the quote but he was sending someone named Luis, who did come out and work up a quote. He and Abel were the ones that actually did the work, with a third person at my house for just a couple of hours one day. At first Luis told me that Mr. Klein would come around a couple of times to check on things during the one week that they were here. Toward the end of the job I specifically asked about Mr. Klein since I had neither seen nor communicated with him after my quote request. When I asked Luis if my job had been subcontracted to him, he said that it had, and that Mr. Klein would in fact not be coming to our house at all. The fact is that I used this company based upon reviews of the work done for others in which Mr. Klein was usually directly involved. This lack of transparency is not OK. If Mr. Klein was not going to be involved in at least occasional on site supervision of the work, I should have been told that this job would be subcontracted out before I agreed to hire this company. Even if Luis and Abel work for this company on a regular basis, I feel that I should have been told up front that Mr. Klein was not going to be involved. It's just a business transparency thing from my perspective.
