So disappointed. I know Fujiyama has great food but service is awful. Made reservations at 7 along with many other people apparently. Waited for an hour and half only no table. I guess saying your next every time another reservation went ahead of us is their idea of reservations. They were busy so it was obvious our business didn't matter. This was my first time here and everything was amazing! The service was very fast, the food was so so fresh and delicious, and the staff was great. I'll start with the positive; the food was good. However, we waited over an hour for a hibachi table, WITH a reservation. The check in area was so crowded & chaotic. This caused a problem, because the hostess focused on the order of checking in versus the reservation times. The hostess was rarely at the check in desk because she was so busy working in the restaurant. Therefore someone with a reservation 30 minutes after your party could be seated first! They take reservations without regard to their capacity. This was my daughter's 15th birthday party with friends & there was no apology or extras for the excessive wait. To add to the disappointment, the hibachi chef was clearly new & very quiet & inexperienced. I sat at a different table in the non-hibachi area with my family. The hostess said she'd let us know when they sang happy birthday to my daughter. They, of course, never let us know (which isn't a big deal). Overall, it was a disappointing evening. The last time I went to this hibachi restaurant there was also a very long wait & check in was also over crowded & chaotic. At this point, I would go to other hibachi restaurants in the area because there is no reason to go back to this hibachi. read more

We have not been here for over 3 years. We have felt the quality of the sushi has really gone down since they have opened. We found ShopRite and Chester to have better quality sushi and a better price. The last time we had hibachi the shrimp was bad and we were given a hard time complaint about it. This time we went for Hibachi and also got sushi appetizers. The sushi was fine and the hibachi was fine too. I was more pleased this time I would give a 4/5 for the food. What really dropped this review was the obnoxious gong! I have been to many hibachi places and expect the gong whenever there is a birthday however this was excessive. The perks on on the gong was over the top and really ruined the meal for us. Many of our party was covering their ears. We probably won't go back because of this. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times now. The restaurant is clean and the staff are helpful and polite. Service is always good. The food comes quick, and drinks are refilled without having to ask someone. We both really enjoy the hibachi experience and the food. The price for the hibachi is reasonable, and you get a large portion of food. We will return. read more

My first time at Fujiyama was about a week ago and all I can say is, Wow! The experience was great. Not just because I was with a group of friends but the hibachi chef made it a very enjoyable evening. The food was very, very delicious. I was also very happy with the price. I was impressed by Fujiyama - a very pleasant surprise given the location in central NJ. It was the best quality sushi that I've had in NJ. Our family ate in the sushi part of the restaurant and we all enjoyed tons of sushi. The menu does include some Korean dishes and the waitress told us that the chef is Korean but the sushi chef is Japanese. Since my wife is Korean, we ordered the seafood pancake for appetizer. This dish fell short as it was under seasoned and the substitution of scallops for the typical calamari was a poor choice by the chef. Onto the sushi... very solid quality. Four of us shared the Sushi Special C which came on a boat. It was a ton of sushi and we enjoyed 4 different designer rolls. We were all pleasantly surprised by the freshness and quality of the fish. Our only complaint was that the service was very slow. We were a party of 9, but it was at least an hour between the miso soup (very salty) and the sushi. Nonetheless we will definitely return the next time that we are in the area. read more

Went for the first time last night as my daughter is staying with her grandparents and my wife and I went out to see a movie. Saw this as we were leaving the theatre last time we went and figured we'd hit it up this time before the movie. We went upstairs for the sushi as opposed to hibachi which we didn't think we'd have enough time for, plus we really love sushi. Wasn't sure what to expect since we just moved to the area a couple months ago, and sadly there aren't a whole lot of good food choices. We got the formal greeting and a bow as other reviewers mentioned, kinda nice actually. From there on in the service was excellent across the board. Large menu with a number of choices, both raw and cooked, as well as quite a few "special rolls" which is pretty much the norm these days from what I see. Interesting that someone mentioned it is Korean owned, I was actually wondering that not just because of the Korean items on the menu, but also because many of the special rolls had some spice, which seems to be more rare in the "true" Japanese places. I totally don't have a problem with that though, I'm totally down with a little heat! We both started with the house salad which was pretty much a spring mix with a good ginger dressing. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a good start. My wife then had the edemame which is definitely not my thing but was good for what it was, and a fairly large portion as well. She then had the "Four Seasons" special roll which was basically 2 pieces each of 4 completely different complex rolls. Beautiful presentation, and great flavors although she was not as big a fan of the spicier leanings of a couple of the pieces. I had two different rolls, both of which I believe used Jalapenos, the "Macho Man" and the "What's Up". Again, a great presentation, well constructed rolls and some great flavors. Unfortunately I did not realize it was a BYO, but the iced green tea is excellent here. We will definitely be back, no question. I would have to say it was probably our best meal since we moved out here in June. read more

When i walked into this place i was impressed by the friendly approach of the host. He started joking with us as soon as we walked in and it made for a pretty warm welcome. The waitresses were very pleasant and really made you feel appreciated, being both prompt and attentive. As for the food, I ordered there hurricane roll and there spider roll. The presentation was nice, but I was kind of hoping that the hurricane roll, which came with a warning for how spicy/hot it was, would have had more of a kick to it. The spider roll was nothing impressive, it tasted good but it really wasn't anything out of the ordinary. One of the really good things I had was their miso soup. I don't think I've had miso prepared this way before. The soup has a lot of flavor and was really tasty, defiantly worth giving it a shot if you come here and like miso. All in all I would come back here, the prices are a slightly higher then other sushi/habatchi places ive been to, but but nothing more that . And I don't mind paying they little extra for some good quality and friendly service read more

I have been frequenting Fujiyama since they opened back in the early 2000's , at a young age a LOVED sushi and began coming here with my parents since it was the only place around! Some 10+ years later, and I've yet to have a bad meal or bad service. I've had plenty of great lunches and dinners and have made memories while doing so. This restaurant is family owned and operated, and done so with great hospitality. I always feel at home when dining at Fujiyama. Sexy, modern atmosphere which is great for a date night. Large dining area to accommodate larger groups. Hibachi is excellent, and always fun. On your birthday, the owner comes out to give a HILARIOUS, and sometimes embarrassing performance of his own rendition of the "happy birthday" song...prepare for side splitting laughs. Highly recommend, I'll be dining here for years to come. read more

I didn't have time to take a photo because the food is just that good. Fujiyama is a modern and sophisticated Japanese restaurant in, of all places, Hackettstown! Stopped by for lunch while on the road for work, and I'm very glad I did. Service is fast and exceptional. Lunch specials were very reasonably priced and high quality - I ordered the beef negimaki box. So good! Highly recommend! The owner is adorable and caring, walking around to greet customers and crack jokes. All in all, a wonderful experience! Next time I'm in the area, I'm definitely stopping by! read more

Why would you take reservations just to take every single walk in? You have thought this was the restaurant's first day. It was the most chaotic night, I understand it's new year eve but that is no excuse. The hosts were running away from customers when people were trying to ask questions. This place was great! During Covid, they took our temp (scanned our hand) before entering the restaurant. They also brought hand sanitizer to the table. We had the steak, scallop, and shrimp hibachi. We spoke to the manager about my gluten allergy. The manager and waiter were both very knowledgeable about accommodations for those of us with celiac. These are the modifications I had: gluten-free soy sauce, only rice (no noodles), no miso soup, and no soy dipping sauce. They made my dish first with clean utensils so there was no cross-contamination. The food was amazing, service fantastic, and I didn't have a reaction! We will definitely be back. read more

Went for dinner at 7 on a saturday night and had made a reservation in advance because we expected it to be busy. We did have to wait another 15 mins or so after arriving to be seated and there were multiple other people waiting to pick up orders and also be seated. They seemed understaffed (which im very understanding of) and everyone was really trying their best to get people taken care of. Once seated our waitress was very attentive and food came out quickly and was delicious! Will definitely be coming back but may try to come at a different time to avoid the dinner rush read more

The food was so delicious. I had the Ramune soda in grape flavor. This soda just adds an element if fun especially to get it open. I ordered the kani salad which i was so glad i ordered it and i usually ask for it to be spicy, but it was made just right. As a main dish i had the spicy seafood ramen. I attempted to get her attention but it appeared she was taking customers on a first come first served basis and not based on who had reservations and for what time. Why take reservations? One of the worst experiences at a restaurant. Left almost as soon as we arrived. Terrible service with some of the most unprofessional staff ever encountered. Despite calling in advance for reservations as first-time customers, we were treated with an abrasive, rushed staff that told us we needed to be sat downstairs and order immediately because their kitchen was closing. Had we known this beforehand or had we been told in advance when we called for reservations, we would not have waisted our time nor subjected ourselves to such awful treatment. At one point, the waitress snatched the menu from my hands to point at the menu items and demand we order fast. AWFUL is truly an understatement. We refused to stay for obvious reasons and thankfully, ended up having a phenomenal dining experience at the next door restaurant Taphouse Grille. read more

I had heard many good things about coming here from friends, so naturally I was drawn to go. The first time I went for sushi and the atmosphere for was great. The sushi menu is HUGE so many options and all quite good, however a little pricey. I came back a second time to try the hibachi, and I definitely wasn't impressed. While the performance is great, I felt like I was in a basement the entire time. The hibachi was ok, nothing to write home about the portion size was average. Dined at Fujiyama last night with the family for a birthday. I was rather disappointed that there were only 2 servers in the hibachi room for a packed house because it definitely was not enough. At one point I spent 10 minutes trying to at least make eye contact with someone to get my daughters and wife some chopsticks, until I finally got up and got them myself. It was frustrating because we came to enjoy the show of someone cooking in front of us and I wanted to watch the kids' excitement, but I was distracted over some chopsticks. And the drink situation was another story. I didn't want to post this review here, I had hoped to communicate my constructive criticism through their website, because we really do like coming here. The owner is always available and very pleasant; this is just an uncomfortable to deliver in person on a night out with the family. UPDATE For the record, my family loves this restaurant; we look past a lot of minor issues like having to get up for our own chopsticks or resigning to the fact that no one will come by and offer to refill your water. These points aside, the rest of the experience is positive so we keep going. Unfortunately though, when they're off their game things really suffer and last night was sadly one of those nights. I ordered my usual - no noodles, extra vegetables and was told that they cannot do that. Despite the fact that no one has said this to me in years, and there is a $6 charge on the menu for it, so this mildly annoyed me. It was a very busy night (I noticed a group that came in at the same time as us finally seated when we were leaving bc they didn't have a reservation) so I decided to be a little flexible. The usual minor issues ensued - chopsticks and drinks - which I expected going in, and then it happened. I don't know if they were completely overwhelmed, but it looked like they were running out of vegetables and we're trying to stretch but the portions everyone around the table was getting. I seemed to get all of the onions, and nothing else. Now, I don't mean to gripe but going from asking for extra vegetables (and willing to pay) to a thin smattering of onions scattered on my plate was very disappointing. I really hope that the owners read these reviews and do take them seriously because I really want to feel good about going here again. It was to the point that when I pulled up and saw how crowded the parking lot was I started considering the alternatives because I knew that the experience was going to be sub-par. I will probably start looking for a new hibachi restaurant in the area that has a reputation for being more consistent, although I hate to do so but I'm afraid Fujiyama has reached a point where they haven't been able to scale with the local dema Update 2: Went last night again for another birthday and were pleasantly surprised. It was a little early - 6:00. Maybe it was the warm weather, maybe it's a Saturday in July, but it was rather quiet and the service was excellent. I know they put in a ton of effort to create a really nice restaurant in an area that isn't known for having a lot of them, so I'm bumping up my original 3 stars. If I can give it a "0" star I would, this is the worst sushi spot I have been to. My fiancé and I were just there today. We took an order to go for his mom, and to our surprise when she opened it. The smallest, and cheapest portion for $12. The wasabi was the biggest portion in that small container. I have had so better sushi for less. This is freaken ridiculous. For $12 I could have got something a lot better in the CITY! This is a rip off! Ps: Their sushi wasn't even all that, I also got a stomachache from the firecracker. Couldn't finish it. read more

Best sushi in the area. I only come in every few months, but the owner always remembers me and has me seated in the same place, which is so sweet! Their customer service goes above and beyond.
