Quibbles over the name aside, there's not anything particularly wrong with this store. If you live with in a street or so you'd probably be happy to use this as as your local shop. Any further away than that and you'd probably be closer to another shop that does the same job just as well. Its appearance is a little more cared for than other similar businesses in the area. Prices, product range and service all fall somewhere in the middle in the convenience store scale of excellence. A nice base to start from, sure, but a little more effort and imagination is required to make this a remarkable business.

It has a pretty decent selection of wines, spirits and beers, a small selection of fridge food, fresh milk etc and not too shabby amount of cupboard food and confectionery. If you find that your first choice of shop/supermarket is closed be sure to always give this place a go. It's not too expensive and sometimes cheaper than the big chains and tends to have some of the lesser known items that you could be looking for.

Open from early morning until at least 10pm every night this isn't somewhere you'd travel miles to visit but if you live nearby it's a great place to purchase things like compost or barbeque briquettes. They are also notable for stocking a good range of real-ales, an extensive selection of doggie treats (which get the seal of approval from Dave the greyhound) and the man who runs it is a really nice chap who often compliments us on how well Dave is looking and very much lives by the adage 'the show must go on'. Not only does the shop stay open at Christmas and New Year but perhaps most memorably of all through a recent power cut where thanks to a torch-lit fetching service the people of Northfield Road were able to continue to make their essential purchases of booze, fags and Monster Munch.

One of my favourite magazines to read is called AdBusters and this is the only shop I can find it in. I tried WHSmiths and other major retailers and they never have a copy. So I just buy mine from Select & Save every time. They also have great offers on milk and bread and various other food stuffs. I like jelly and usually buy three pots from here for a Pound. They sell pretty much everything that you can buy in s supermarket that isn't a specialty item. The prices are competitive and are a lot cheaper than what you would expect from an independently owned business. Select & Save also have great offers on alcohol and has become very popular with local drinkers in the area. It is not open 24 hours, something that Moseley is desperately lacking, but it does stay open pretty late. They also have a pay point machine for filling up gas/electric cards and topping up your mobile phone account. There is sometimes a big queue in the shop and the owner can be a little slow and clumsy, but that's not his fault. I never usually have to wait too long for service.

Some are more complete, others less so. This is one of the most complete I've seen there. I think is more of a small supermarket than a convenience store, really. They have a wide variety of products, like snacks, drinks, candy, all the usual things you expect from a convenience store. The seller is pretty friendly too. Nothing different and nothing that I would tell you that you absolutely you have to go there but it's good enough for the odd thing you might need to pick up if you are in the area.

It was fairly close to my house which did affect my choice, but there were closer shops I passed by because this one suited my needs better, due to a combination of good selection, low prices and friendly service. I bought a lot of my vegetables there, particularly enjoying the chillis which are priced low to enough to encourage a spicyness in my home cooking that might be best described as "experimental". There's also good deals to be had on products such as rice, if you're prepared to buy in bulk. In conclusion, maybe not the biggest or best business of it's kind in the area, but it's a damn fine competitor none the less.

The overall look/feel of the store is similar to any Sainsbury's Local, it was easy to find what I was looking for. The shelves were reasonably well stocked, and a Costa Express coffee machine served hot drinks only. It was easy enough to get in and out of the store in a couple of minutes, using the Sainsbury's Smartshop app which allows you to scan items as you're walking around the store, and then you can pay via the app, scan the QR code in the exit area and head out. The prices are inflated because it is a convenience store, if you have more time you may want to head to the larger Morrisons in Edgbaston which is only a short ride away on the tram. The security guard at the front of the store came across as rude and felt like he was trying to intimidate customers and just made me feel uncomfortable when I was doing nothing wrong. 3* - Pretty typical Sainsbury's Local, very useful location for a convenience store is the highlight to write home about.

The student area of Selly Oak is a veritable hotbed of convenience stores, so Lifestyle Express,…read morelocated on the upper end of Bristol Road in the area, has its work cut out to distinguish itself from its numerous, extremely well priced competitors. It does this in a few ways. Firstly, their service goes above and beyond. I've been in a couple of dozen times and the service has never been anything less than fantastic, always friendly, and they can't ask if you need any help quickly enough it seems. The second way is by a great range of products, going much further than usual shops, selling cards (although admittedly this section is sometimes sparsely populated) and an above average selection of frozen goods (these are often mysteriously missing from small shops such as this). The best (in my humble opinion) is their low canned drinks prices, with some available from as little as 30p, a price you rarely see in this day and age.
