Anyway- Small store by some standards, but I found that it had everything I needed to restock my pantry of items I had used up over the year. I usually wait to buy my supplies before winter hits. I have a very hard time finding the Chinese sausage the Kam Yen Jan brand, not sure why it's hit and miss at stores, but it is, not sure if it just not popular in the east coast as much as it is in the west coast where I could buy it at any Asian market. Thought and suggestions on where I could purchase, would be greatly appreciated, because when I do find it, I usually buy about 10 packages. Recently got to the area and am impressed and happy to have found this place. The selection of Asian groceries was fantastic. I found a wide variety of fresh produce, including unique Asian vegetables and fruits. The quality of the produce and other products was excellent. Everything looked fresh and well-maintained. You can see employees prepping and bagging/wrapping fresh produce. The meat and seafood counters were well-stocked. There was also a traditional chinese BBQ counter with things like Char Siu and crispy roasted pork which was a great and welcomed suprise to me. The aisles were filled with a good range of spices, sauces, noodles, and other pantry staples from different asian cultures that I stocked up on. You can tell the store was a little older and gives your traditional Asian supermarket vibes so if that holds you back, I would say give them a chance anyway as it is clean, well-organized, and reminds me of my childhood stores. I am pleased to see the Asian market reopened in Middletown. I frequented the original store till it closed and began traveling to Marlboro for my exotic ingredients. Many of my staple it's are available here in Middletown but the Marlboro Asian Market is much better than the Middletown location for amount of products. The new Middletown staff are excellent, friendly helpful and any have good English language skills. I will continue to shop here and recommend it to others. read more

This is such a hidden gem for the area I'm surprised it's not as busy as it should be! The store is a little disorganized but the products in the store are the best and the staff is always super friendly and willing to help recommend and find anything for you. Love this market. We used to go to the Asian Food Market in Marlboro, which admittedly has a larger selection, but SM tends to have everything we need. The staff are always friendly and their command of English, from managers to cashiers, is comforting. The small siu mei stand always has fresh meats and the fellow standing behind it is helpful and polite. Grab a pound of the siu yuk roast pork if you want a treat. Their frozen and refrigerated section has a huge selection of dumplings, hot pot ingredients, fresh noodles, and even konjac/shirataki noodles if low-carb is your thing. I've been impressed with the freshness of their vegetable and meat selections each time I've visited. Staples like choy sum are always bright green and crisp and the meat cabinet has a ton of interesting cuts you might not find at your local grocery store. read more

Nestled off of busy Route #35 and attached to a Chinese restaurant (Crown Palace), SM Food Market is another Asian market I frequent. Smaller than most NJ Asian markets, SM does still have most departments like fruit and vegetables, a cooked meat section, meat, poultry, and seafood sections. Vegetables here are really fresh but a tad pricier than most Asian markets. Of note is the baby bok choy (basically Chinese cabbage) that has always been super fresh. The meat, poultry, and seafood sections are kept clean, but I honestly have not purchased anything from either department so I can't comment beyond the cleanliness aspect. The cooked meat section when you first walk in has some really excellent roast pork, BBQ pork, and soy-marinated chicken. I've tried the roast duck and it was pretty average with not much meat (a lot of bones) and dry. Here are some tips when ordering: TIP#1: Always look for the fattier cuts as sometimes pieces could be sitting under heating lamps for hours, so best to start off with a fattier cut that won't dry out. TIP#2: Look for the cuts with the dark red/almost black ends as the BBQ sauce has caramelized resulting in some intense smokey sweet flavor (almost like American style burnt ends). TIP#3: Don't have the butcher slice the meat for you, do that when you get home, as a whole piece will stay moist longer. TIP#4: If you're an adventurous eater, note you can often score a pretty large roasted pig's head (getting the tender and deliciously fatty cheeks is reason enough) for a cheap price. I've haggled with the butcher and have gotten an entire large pig head for $4. read more

I had high hopes for this new Asian grocery store after the prior tenant moved their Asian Food Market to Marlboro. I visited this grocery store shortly after their grand opening. I was sorely disappointed at what I saw. The inventory was very limited. In addition, unlike most Asian food markets, this store does not have a bakery. Moreover, in the refrigerated section, they do not sell any prepared food. The only prepared food in the entire store is a small metal cart selling roasted meats. Most of the meats are selling at approximately $10 a pound. Given that I had no other option to purchase any other prepared food, I placed an order for 1/2 pound of BBQ char siu pork. I have several complaints about the order. 1. I told the butcher that I wanted to order a 1/2 pound. The butcher very forcibly replied that it would be a little bit over a half a pound. I assumed that meant. 6 pound or along that line. Instead, he gave me .9 pound, nearly double of what I asked for. 2. The butcher initially reached for the pork hanging on the hook, then paused, and decided to grab a slab of pork lying in the bottom of the drip pan. It was completely laden in fat and oil, which contributed to the weight. 3. He then placed the plastic container on the scale and then placed the meat in the container when he weighed it. He did not subtract out the weight of the container when he charged me. 4. When I brought the pork home, I was sorely disappointed to discover that the pieces were comprised of mostly fat. There was very little meat at all. I essentially paid $10 a pound for a plastic container, lots of oil, and many slabs of fat. Had this been a positive experience, I would have shopped there every week. Instead, I will make the long trip to Edison or Marlboro for a better quality Asian market. read more

This is a great supermarket... perishable goods As well as Canton and bag products there is a wide variety of items that you can select from. The T section is superb (green tea or more). There's also a variety of other South Asian products... But the best is the fresh crispy vegetables... All green leaf or red leaf and very healthy... fruits as well. The cooked meats are pretty good... The duck was tender, Crispy , and moist... The roasted and barbecue pork we're both good. This is the place I will return to... Already put the vegetables at home over the course of three nights the first night for dinner... I was very happy. read more

Just visited today. So happy to finally have found an Asian market in the area! This store is definitely on the smaller end in terms of selection. However, they definitely have all the basics. The place was very clean and their produce was surprisingly fresh compare to all the other Asian markets I've been to. The only complaint is way their products are organized. It doesn't seem very logical. For example, the potato starch was by itself in the ramen aisle instead next to all the other flours. Went yesterday to purchase 2 jars of Thai Sate Sauce from Eastland Trading. One of the jar had a little oil leak, turned out its caked with mild on top. Went back the next morning and the manager was a little upset that I had opened the jar?!?! She went back to check if they really stock this particular brand. And told me that she can't give me refund because she can't read the bar code at the bottom of the receipt that was not readable due to oil leaked. I am very amazed that businesses still don't understand the value of customer service. They're willing to sacrifice customer over $2.39. I will not be returning for a... while. Worst customer service I've ever experienced, just left there a few minutes ago they threw me and my family out at 7:45 said they were closed although the sign on the door and web site says 8:00pm. I asked the gentleman who was extremely rude waving his arms and yelling at us to leave what time they closed he said 7:15pm. One of my biggest pet peeves about Asian stores is the way they smell. The old store that was in this location was exactly that, and so is the large Asian market in Marlboro. This one, however, breaks the mold. Well-stocked, clean, good variety, and whoa... NOT stinky. So pleased this store opened as this area has been missing a good Asian store in years! Vegetables are fresh, meats are fresh, and they take pride in the appearance of their store. Definitely not your "typical" Asian store, from my experience. On our way back to NY , we decided to stop by this asian super market for some groceries and snacks. They have their own free parking lot with lots of room to park. When we got out of the car and went to grab a cart, which was located at the side of the entrance, I notice their carts are really new and clean unlike the ones you would usually find at target or other Asian markets. When we went in we notice they have their own chinese bbq which we rarely see in nj, we have alot of those in nyc but I haven't seen any in nj so far. Grabbed a pound of roast park and went to explore the rest of the place. Surprisingly everything was really clean and organized, to the point where we started to doubt if this was an Asian supermarket. In nyc, usually asian super markets are unorganized , smelly, tight, and you would feel like your at war with the other customers. Not only was this super market clean, organized and with lots of space to move around, but the best part was, their live seafood dept and meat dept had no foul smell at all, something I've never experience before. All the staff were friendly and helped us locate where everything was, definitely recommend everyone to try this supermarket. We'll definitely return again , when we go visit our relatives in nj again. read more

Visited this store on a Saturday afternoon after not finding the item I was looking for in the Marlboro Store. This market is much smaller than the Marlboro store and was not as busy. The cashiers are friendly and I was happy to find the Yakult that I was looking for in stock in this location which was on sale. The store is on the Rt35 North bound side next to Middletown Imaging. The selection is limited as this location is much smaller but the store was clean and easy to navigate. read more

While in New Jersey my family and I went to look for a supermarket to buy groceries before making our trip back home. We found this supermarket and we were pleasantly surprised to find how nice this supermarket was. The seafood area was so much cleaner and there was no odor compared to past supermarkets in New York I've been to. While in the area we also found that the seafood was extremely fresh. We were unsure which fish we wanted but the staff there was very helpful in helping us select which fish was best suited for what we were looking for. We were suggested to get the sea bass as well as given a proper way to cook it and where in the store we could get other ingredients to go with the fish. After getting home with my family and prepared the fish as suggested we were so pleased with how it came out. I would definitely go back to this supermarket and have it as my main supermarket in the future. The cleanliness of the store, helpfulness of the staff and the freshness of the products there were highlights that are rarely found in markets similar to these in New York or that I've found in New Jersey. read more

Since this store reopened I find produce prices going up and quality going down. On a recent trip I found eggplants soft and mushy as well as red beets. Mushrooms looked suspect. I bought a pineapple at Shoprite the same day for $2 less. Scallions (green onion) price was double the last time I shopped here. Our first experience was not a good one as we went on a Tuesday and the vegetables were limited and did not appear fresh. We learned to go towards the end of the week as it appears they stock up for the higher volume of business on weekends. There appears to be more items on sale now from when they first opened. The vegetable prices are higher than other places but the ones we buy are very fresh and last an entire week (baby yu choy, bok choy and spinach). Staff, specially cashiers are very friendly.
