We really had no intention of seeing a movie while traveling, but the girls had been counting down to Mamma Mia's release and the timing just worked out so well I couldn't say no. The kind man behind the booth saw we were in a rush and promptly sold us our tickets. He even sat us closer to the front (not in neck bending type seats, but the cheapest farther back seats) because those seats are less expensive. He explained to us that our film would be in German and didn't have sub-titles but that there ARE showings of English films a few times a day. We opted for the German version because we thought it would be super cool to do this as Americans. It really was an awesome experience, one I was really happy to give my children! The seats aren't reclining but they're larger than stadium seats and quite comfortable. The venue is incredibly clean and I love the life sized Oscar statue and cut outs of some of my favorite actors scattered around. I've never seen this type of decor in a movie theater and really liked it! The place was bright and light, which is also new to me in a movie theater. It had kind of a unique, futuristic type feel, which we loved! An all around awesome time here! It was the perfect way to cap off a night walking around this gorgeous town. We parked up the street to the left of the theater. It's free and open to all after 18:00. There's also a magnificent Italian restaurant there, which shouldn't be missed. Highly recommend for locals and tourist alike!

When you purchase a ticket you are given a time and a number. You wait in a large courtyard for your time and number to signal the right to go through the turnstiles and start your tour. The courtyard has a gift shop and a few benches to sit on. The castle is located in a small quaint German town close to the border of Austria. It was built by King Maximilian ll of Bavaria and used as a summer home for his family. His children Ludwig ll and Otto spent many years here. The tour is informative and moves quickly. You are allowed to take photos and questions are welcomed. The tour goes through about six rooms and lasts around thirty to forty minutes depending on time spent asking questions. The rooms are beautifully maintained and offer an excellent opportunity to expand your knowledge of the past.

We were told to arrive 1 hour before our reservation but 30 minutes would have been plenty of time. We were in a small group and our guide made sure that all of us were settled in each room before starting. She gave us a brief overview before starting the prerecorded audio narration. I left feeling more knowledgeable about King Ludwig's childhood and family life at Hohenschwangau. The tour took about 30 minutes and there was not much to see afterwards. We had thought we needed 3 hours for this castle but the walk up was short, but 2 hours for everything was plenty of time for us.

Schloss Rankelstein or Castel Roncolo is a medieval castle on the outskirts of Bolzano, Italy. It…read moreis located on a protected porphyry rock along the Val Sarentino Road. Castel Roncolo is particularly famous for its frescos dating back to Mediaeval times. It illustrates authentic knight sagas, literature scenes, court ladies and life on the farm as well as hunting scenes. There's also a castle tavern in the courtyard. I was told there would be a shuttle bus from the city center to the castle parking lot (beneath the castle hill) by the hotel concierge (This turned out to be a misinformation. We were told when we made it to the castle, it was discontinued during the COVID pandemic, and it never got resumed). No problem, we just followed the trail next to the Talfer River, and enjoyed our two-hour easy hike (except from the bottom of the castle hill to the top; about 20 mins of climbing, I don't recommend strollers) to and from the castle. The trail besides the river turned out to be very pleasant. We saw some castles and mansions along the way, mountains in distance, we crossed the river on several bridges. I'd recommend this short easy hike. Here's some history of the castle: In 1237, the original complex was built by the Lords of Wangen, and in 1385, the wealthy merchants Franz and Niklaus Vintler purchased it. This family had it decorated with frescoes and equipped with components that facilitated life in those times, e.g. a pivy and a cistern for water storage. From the 15th century on, it continually kept changing hands, the castle was repeatedly modified and frescoes and paintings were added. A gunpowder explosion in the southern part of the castle destroyed parts of it in 1520, including a circular wall and a donjon, which had to be reconstructed. In 1672, a lightning bolt caused a fire which destroyed the east part of Castel Roncolo, which has no longer been renovated. From the 18th century on, it was no longer inhabited and kept deteriorating. Only when Josef con Görres recognized the value of the frescoes and reported it to Ludwig I of Bavaria, architects and artists started examining the paintings. This continues to the present day.
