This interesting public art sculpture is named "Freedom, Justice and Compassion" by artist David Breeden. It is located on the steps of the Roanoke County Courthouse (now the Oliver W. Hill Justice Center).
Acquired in 1989, it is a soapstone sculpture. There is no caption and no explanation of the artwork. The tall thin pieces don't indicate "freedom" to me, but maybe they do to you.
David Breeden was a Virginia native, born in Fairfax in 1938. Much of his art was made from Virginia soapstone, stained glass, metal and concrete. Other artworks can be seen on his website, http://www.biscuitrun.com/studiohistory.html. Mr. Breeden died in 2006.
