My family and I were visiting Irvine for Christmas and went to Free Chapel for the Christmas Eve Service. This was our first time there and we were looking forward to it. When we arrived, what greeted us wasn't "welcome" or anything like this. But two security guards that searched and tagged our purses and bags. They did that for everyone. I was quite shock as I have never experienced this throughout my decades of visiting churches. Throughout the whole event, no one greeted us or showed any smiles. Just a very cold church. Too much flash, no scripture to deepen the word of God or even in bible. More standing up than sitting down through the whole time I'm here especially during service. Sadly, I witness at least 2 people shoved an average size guy. He didn't do anything wrong at all as I pass by. Heard some offensive comments and gossip from their ego too. Music played by worship was too extreme and can even hear it just yards past the parking lot. Claim they are loving; turns out a flat lie as seen towards new people and myself too not connected. Not a single person said hi and care to connect any way at all. No repentance from the staff to pastors including Jason Jesudasen and Jentezen Franklin. They need to take some responsibility simply. I had such a wonderful and amazing experience in being employed here at this wonderful Preschool. Not only was the staff so supportive and so welcoming but the Parents were so sweet! Ms. Jennifer Irving and her assistant Ms. Teri were very supportive to their staff and so understanding as well. By far this Preschool (Free Chapel Preschool Irvine, Ca) was one of the best places to work for! They treat each student with respect and dignity. If you're seeking a church that centers on the Gospel rather than politics, I suggest looking elsewhere. I've attended Free Chapel with my boyfriend for about a month before we decided to invite his whole family for their first time. We attended expecting a Christ-centered message. Instead they showed a video of Pastor Jentezen Franklin interviewing the U.S. ambassador to Israel. It was entirely political, they were promoting support for Israel while presenting the situation in the Middle East in a one-sided way that ignored the humanity and suffering of Palestinians. Afterward, I looked further into Pastor Franklin and learned that he is an avid Trump supporter and often uses his platform to promote his political views. This was deeply disappointing to find out. A church should be a place for spiritual growth, reflection, and unity, NOT political influence or messaging. Using the church to push political narratives, especially ones that overlook human suffering, goes against the core of Christ's message. Jesus taught love, mercy, justice, and humility. Clearly these things are of lesser importance to this church than a political agenda. read more

I had to work here for a special event as a contracted vendor and believe me when I tell you, this is one of the most soulless churches I've ever had the misfortune to visit. I have worked at churches all over southern california and have seen it all, good and bad (mostly good), but I have never left one feeling so disgusted by humanity. Especially these two women who were running the children's event, standing close to me as I worked saying the nastiest, most bigoted things, gossiping and laughing cruelly about specific types of people they disapproved of. Not caring at all that I was 2 feet away from them and I was the exactly the type of people they were hating on. It took everything in me not to lash out at them. I couldn't afford to get fired from this event. But I wanted to. I regret not saying anything. Also had similar issues with the guards being rude and giving me grief when I just needed enter the main building to use the restroom. If you actually value what it means to be a christian, biblically, just stay away from this place. All style and no substance. read more

Overall a 3.5. The praise is short as well as the message (just 1 scripture reference). Mainly a great fit for new believers or Christians early in their walk with God. I enjoyed Ben Prescott's message on sitting in Eternity with God and how that affects our reactions / life on earth as we are "just visiting". He is very charismatic and his words are compelling. Loved the Aussie accent and his humor. The service is nice and short. Also I was moved by the camp they are holding for young people. Seems like a great place for new connections and restoration. Some of the testimonials included people that had ideations about suicide that were able to heal from that. Their cafe is a nice touch. They give you a free cup of coffee or tea. Line is kind of long / slow in processing orders. Iced coffee is premixed with condensed milk, they ran out of hot coffee. I ordered ginger peach tea, but was given a korean yujacha mix with hot water. Very high on sugar, which I was trying to avoid. But I did get to enjoy their Next Steps class. Lunch was catered. I think their servers could use a smile or two (pls no zombie face). When I asked for less pasta due to diabetes, I felt like it was a weird request. Food was enjoyable (chicken, pesto rigatoni, bagged salad with some dressings). There was a bountiful offering on drink options, tea and coffee. It is super generous. The order of things for new members is kind of like a zig zag festival, you go from one table to another, etc. They even take your photo. There are alot of different groups to sign up for where you can volunteer your time. It seemed like a lot asking a 1st timer to commit to so much after just one service. I wanted to volunteer in the children's area. The team lead was nice enough. But kind of perfunctory explaining how to get the live scan (finger printing done), etc. I mentioned I was already a real estate broker for 19+ years. She said she was a social worker and the church likes to get their own live scan done. Which is understandable. But it just put me off. No alternatives/options. I think perhaps a toned down version of next steps, just different bible studies or small groups to get involved with, or an offering for deeper study in the word would be great. Then connection to all the different ministry teams later on in my journey would feel more organic. The pastor leading the next steps wanted everyone to come be seated even though we were still eating. I felt more comfortable standing and eating at the high top table and listened in. But felt disapproval. It felt kind of forced. Perhaps segregated times for eating, then the meeting/ message would make it feel less controlling? But they do lock up everything after the next steps class. I wanted to use the restroom before leaving, and it was locked. Thank God there are alot of retail options nearby. Overall, glad I came. It is great they are Pentacostal believers. Would like to see more of that - maybe it happens in a bible study or midweek service? It's really an amazing facility. Parking is very organized. All the handicapped parking was taken but the parking team led me to a spot that was close to the entrance! Truly 5 stars!!! Restrooms are clean. 1st floor restrooms had a line before and after service. 2nd floor is less used, and a better option. Today we also did communion together, which was great! Awesome Church. I've read many reviews about "concert like" worship and how it's too loud. It's perfect, great singers, awesome musicians and great worship. The sound production team does a really great job. Concert Like professionalism For Jesus!! With professional musicians. All these people commenting about concert like worship are the same people that go to worldly Concert (Twice as Loud btw), singing along with their favorite artist/musician, but have an issue with church having the same atmosphere for Jesus? They can scream and cheer for their favorite sports team at stadiums/home, but have a problem with it being too loud for Jesus?? One thing I do miss about this church is Pastor Ben Prescott. He had so much depth in his preaching, abstract, yet easy to follow, and incredible delivery. You can tell he's gone through his challenges in life, which made it so relatable. I am having a hard time adapting to any of the pastors that have been preaching for the past year. It really has pushed me away from free chapel a little bit as I try to find a pastor that can speak to me like Ben did. Maybe it is the inconsistency issue at free chapel right now with these pastors. I really hope they figure it out soon. read more

Enjoyed my visit to Free Chapel OC for Christine Caine's Preaching and Teaching workshop and Propel Women's Day of Ministry for Women in Ministry. Beautiful facility, clean, open and lots of cool lighting. I spent Thursday in the smaller first floor room and then Friday in the main chapel. Love how the chapel lights up in the evening and there's also seating outside, enjoyed lunch outside on Thursday - it was just a beautiful day. Prosperity feel good sugar coated gospel type of church. No teaching of sin no teaching of the gospel. No expository teaching. No verse by verse teaching, night club type of church, more like entertaining circus. Alot of motivation pep talking from leaders than bible preaching . Been following Free Chapel in Georgia for over two years now and all the sermons have been feeding my hunger for God. Today, me and a girlfriend drove from San Diego with excitement, anticipation and expectation. As we drove in the parking lot volunteers were awesome and helpful. We got escorted from the parking lot with a huge smile and southern hospitality from one of the volunteers and she took me straight to the concierge to get connected and got a nice gift box. It was a thoughtful surprise of free coupon for coffee, coffee blend and a mug. Come on Jesus, thank you! Went upstairs to be with my girlfriend and her husband who are regular family here. Tonight I was extremely disappointed at how I was treated. I bring my daughter to youth night I come from far so while I wait around for her to be done, I park my car and walk over to the shopping center for a coffee while I wait for her. A security man screamed at me from far away telling me that it was private property and I couldn't park there or zi would get towed! I explained to him that I attend church there and that I was waiting for my daughter since she was inside but he continued to scream as though he didn't hear what I had said as he kept repeating himself. I was very disappointed at how rude he was and this should really be brought up to his attention. I have always parked there while I wait for my daughter and never have I been treated that way. It's obvious that if I had no business there I wouldn't park there. read more

The lights are turned off during the worship. This means it is extremely dark. Finding a seat during the worship requires care, especially if you are a female. I was touched inappropriately by a man in the audience. I told the ushers, who are very nice and professional, but no action was taken. That man was still there on other occasions, always refusing to stand up to let me pass, to find a seat. Remember, not everyone in the audience is a Christian. It shows the lack of understanding of the real world, that they feel it necessary to worship in a nightclub atmosphere. People with predatory propensities are attracted to that atmosphere. Likewise, if you drop off your children at the children's church, ensure you know who is looking after them. I would go as far as to say, don't do that. When things are too loosey goosey, it may not be a sufficiently safe environment, if the nightclub atmosphere in during worship is anything to go by. I could never understand the need to have guards around everywhere, when the lights are turned off in the main auditorium. Freechapel is an all-comers type of place, with no real accountability on who is coming. It is not a church in terms of an Ekklesia (from the New Testament). At first glance it appears to be a church, but it is most definitely more like a business than a church in the true sense of the word. Come in, sing a few songs, hear a seeker-friendly message, give your offering and leave. Next group comes in. What is wrong with this? Nothing, if this is what you want. Tick off the visit to "church" and continue living as you want. Again, no accountability for new believers. They have the usual recovery groups for these types of places. No real change and so eventually many will get disillusioned and go back to their former lives, because they never really left those lives. On the good side, the building is of a high quality, and very clean. Conclusion - this is a business. Just remember that, and you won't be disappointed. read more

I've had this on the back burner for a while. I decided to just post my draft here and let it speak for itself... : As I've already written a review for a church, I realize I'm going over my quota. But I sometimes double up my Sunday by doing a service at Mariners and following it up with one at Free Chapel. So I thought I'd include this review in here to actually describe the experience and atmosphere, seeing as that info doesn't clearly come across in most of reviews. -- Parking is full and tight. But it is regulated by staff (similar to Disneyland). Come about 15 minutes before service in order to find a spot. -- This is a long service. It is 1.5 - 2 hours long, depending on the message. There's about 30 minutes of "modern" music, followed by a message and everything else. -- A collection basket is passed. -- There is no communion. -- Audience members are called up for blessings. -- The interior of the main worship room is simple and modest, given that the room is blacked out and strobe lighting used. -- If you arrive when the lights are out, someone will show you to a seat. -- Once the sun sets, the blackout curtains will rise to reveal a nighttime view of Irvine. This is a nice touch. -- The music is thunderous, with an emphasis on heavy bass. -- Songs are all modern. They weren't classics re-interpreted into rock. They were brand new rock songs about Jesus. So I didn't recognize a lot of them, though it's easy enough to sing along with the lyrics on the screens. -- There are several mounted TVs that show lyrics, charity videos, and / or shots of the pastors and guest speakers as they move around a wide stage. -- Service is on the second floor of a plain industrial building. The lower level is for families with children. There is also couch seating outside the main room if you'd prefer to lounge and listen in a brighter and more open space. -- Bring your own Bible if you'd like to reference the passages being discussed that night. -- The attitude of the crowd is very open, comfortable, and positive. There's no sense of judgment here. There are a lot of people here in love with Jesus and happy to show it. Yes, there is a sense of anonymity during music worship, especially with all the lights out; but this does help to lower inhibitions, giving rise to a deeper sense of the Holy Spirit and allows one to worship as loudly as they like without apprehensions. -- Open atmosphere. There are a lot of people here just on fire for the Lord; there's the ccasional hallelujahs, hands lifted high, standing in agreement, etc etc. Everything here should appeal to a younger crowd, but there are seniors scattered about as well. Expect a lot of crowd feedback, varied participation, hands, and so forth. Again, this is an atmosphere where you shouldn't be afraid or apprehensive. Let it out. read more

Calvary Chapel churches do teach the word of God verse by verse where they address sin and not just take verses where God says He will bless us. I have gone to free chapel a few times. I quite enjoyed it at first besides theatrical beginning 20 minute concerts in the beginning. Then their senior pastor had begun to discuss politics such as abortion and gay marriage. I strongly advise that if you support the right for LGBTQIA+ and women to have the rights over their bodies, do not come here. I cannot support hatred in my community, hence I will never come here again. Also the pastor was definitely similar to southern baptist. The messages were muddy and ran in circles. Much better pastors that do not need shouting, thousand dollar theatricals and full blown concerts. Peace and love, but no thank you. read more

This is my second time attending as the Sunday evening service is convenient. The place is easy to locate, parking is convenient (especially if you are a visitor as you are shown favoritism). There's parking lot attendants, security, and plenty of friendly people to direct you, as the building is big. The music is contemporary and in my opinion good though some of the song lyrics are a bit too repetitive, and the volume is sometimes hard on the ears. The preaching from the lead pastor Jentezen Franklin is mostly application, so if you want a lot of scripture reading, or expository preaching you should look elsewhere. Jentezen's preaching seems to have the goal to get people excited so a lot of voice raising, moving about, and just talking differently than if one was discussing God with someone at the bus stop. The environment seems to be a bit charismatic, but doesn't seem out control. Like many charismatic gatherings, their closing songs and speaking over the music can go on for around twenty minutes, but plenty of people left early before the music stopped. They also teach tithing is a new covenant thing. Not my cup of tea, but if this is your thing check it out. read more
