Decided to check this place out for lunch based on recommendations off Yelp. I liked the way the place looked, good hole in the wall type place decked out in all types of Philly gear and pictures. The staff was incredibly friendly from the lady who took the order to the guys making the food, plenty of welcomes and have a nice days on the way out. The food didn't live up for me though. First I am not from Philly so I will not say anythign about authentic cheese steak or not. The bread they use is really good stuff but I was dissapointed in the amount of meat you get for a 7.50 sandwich. Based on looking at others sandwiches that were picked up they all looked the same for amount of meat. The sandwich tasted good just not what I would call a 7.50 sandwich. The upcharges were also very nickle and dime, want a different cheese (not attidional) .50, want lettuce .50 for lettuce? A head of lettuce is 1.00 at the grocery. The real killer for me was the fries though, they were overcooked and covered in more salt than I have ever seen in my life. Pick up two of them and your fingers are covered in salt. If I am going to spend 12.00 on a sandwich, fries and a drink there are better options for the money in the area. read more

I've really been wanting Fred's to rebound to its former greatness. Back in 2005/2006, this place had the best cheesesteaks in the DFW area. I don't know if expansion has eroded the quality, but something is just a bit off. The bread doesn't taste the same, the portions (while still the same length) have gotten smaller in terms of the amount of beef and cheese, and the greasy, stick-to-your-ribs sandwich I was used to in the past is no more. Cheesesteak House off Davis is now the standard for cheesesteaks in the DFW area. read more

BEWARE.......this is real "stick to your stomach" food. I never thought i would find a cheese steak this bomb in Richardson, TX of all places. Lucky for my arteries that this place is only 3 miles away from one of my company's offices, so I go as much as i can. The cheese steaks are amazing. it's nice and greasy as they should be, the wiz is mixed in with the meat, yeah i said it, WIZ. i always get extra wiz and extra meat.......if i go out, i'm gonna go out with a happy stomach! So I'm on a quest to find the best Philly Cheesesteak in the Dallas area, and through Yelp I found Fred's. Like the reviews mentioned, it is a hole-in-the-wall little joint. The staff was friendly and courteous. I ordered mine with mushrooms and bell pepper and a side of fries. It was all good, plenty cheese and mushrooms and the fries were seasoned nicely. Food is good. They're always out of stuff. If you want to try their grilled chicken sandwich, they never have any - so don't ask. Every other time I order mozzarella sticks, they're out of those. My husband and I wanted to try someplace new for a late lunch (late afternoon) so I hopped on Yelp and looked for someplace close by with high ratings. Fred's caught my attention because my hubby loves Philly Cheese steaks. Because we arrived at such a random time there was only one person in front of us in line. My husband got a standard cheese steak, and I had the chicken, cheese and onions. We both liked our sandwiches. The meat was good quality which is key in a good cheese steak. The only think that I really didn't like was that the bread was chewy and almost tough, like it had been microwaved. I think we will try it again sometime. read more

This small dive on 15th and Custer has the best Philly cheese steaks in town. No frills..just a good old mom and pop kind of restaurant. Nothing fancy here. The only thing that put me off was the Philadelphia eagles shrines that adorn the walls. The ambiance is definitely not remarkable but the greasy food is. Fred's is a solid pick for a cheesesteak in the north Dallas area. My caveat is that I haven't been to other cheesesteak places in the Metroplex, so my comparison is to other cheesesteak palaces I have eaten at around the US. Fred's could be the best in Dallas for all I know. Let's cut to the chase. I had a large cheesesteak with onions and extra peppers. It was meaty, not too greasy. Peppers and onions were nicely grilled. No lack of food here - a large is enough for 2 lunches. My tastes run toward the gooey for cheesesteaks, so I'd prefer to see some oozing cheese action, but my sandwich was a little too dry for me. All in all a credible cheesesteak, but I would not call it great compared to others I have had. Also tried the "hot wings". These turned out to be deep fried chicken wings with a spicy batter. They were actually pretty tasty, but not a saucy "buffalo style" if that's what you want. The place is smallish, serving mostly a lunch crowd. Even at 2pm, the place was pretty full. It's a guy's place - don't expect to pick up women here. You're basically here to satisfy a cheesteak hankering and to max out your cholesterol rating. read more

Place was pretty good and the portions are generous. The Shrimp Po' Boy is actually worth a try if you're needing a seafood fix, but the real reason you come here is for the delicious cheese steak. If you are looking for the best cheesesteaks in the area, this is it. If you want a fancy corporate establishment, keep on moving. Its a small dive on 15th, that has great cheesesteaks and a down home feel.--minus the philly sports stuff. (Go Cowboys) You have to pay extra for fries and a drink, so your meal could run you into double digits pretty quick....not for every day consumption unless you want to look like Gilbert Grapes mom. read more

I've been searching for a place like this since moving to the metroplex. No flash, fairly priced- just good grub. Had a small cheesesteak with a side of fries and loved both. You might be wary about a six inch not being enough but it was surprising big and perfect for a moderate appetite. They cook it fresh, so the small wait is completely acceptable. Seating is pretty limited so try to get the jump on the lunch rush. I did lose my appetite just a little bit when I saw all the Eagles swag all over the walls, but I'll give them a pass for that. It's pretty good . They have the philly attitude haha. I went here because it was close to my house but I don't seek it out because it is kind of expensive. I would just suggest more toppings and like when you order mushrooms they should put a handful of mushrooms not three. It has a facelift remodel and I like the newly painted walls. I went to the Richardson location on a Saturday at 3:00 p.m. It was not very busy and it took some time for my cheesesteak. They seemed like they could care less but that was kind of cool. Okay so this place is a total hole in the wall. If you are looking for an exciting dining experience with entertainment and luxurious surroundings, go elsewhere. I've been eating here about once a week for years. I get a double meat double cheese with onion straws or fries depending on my mood. The steaks are made to order and the food is always too hot to eat. The place could use a face lift, but I've watched many a philly be made and I trust that the place is sanitary. I LOVE FREDS SO MUCH!!! think they should mass produce their sauces--- talk about hitting a goldmine. Also, when Fred is in there, he's always been friendly and makes fun of me for eating there so much. Good guy, knows what the heck he's doing. I used this place yesterday for the lunch for my monthly meeting at work. I had never had them before, but I heard great things, and I also looked up reviews online. When I called to place my order, I spoke with Marcus, who was pleasant and efficient. He even went the extra step to get the names of each person to put on their sandwiches. I requested they be ready at a specific time. Upon arrival, they were packed! Marcus maintained that jovial attitude, which shows me he cares about his job. The sandwiches were ready only a few minutes late of my expected time, but I understood why! Everyone enjoyed their sandwich immensely! Filthy, dirty, in disrepair, and pretty disgusting are the floors, ceiling and tables. I was groced out sitting there waiting for my cheesesteak. I wanted to leave except I had already paid for it. I ate as fast as I could. The steak was hot and generous, but not gooey cheesey. And I asked for extra cheese. First time I was in it was no good. But everyone says it's good. I figured i'd try a local philly place today for me and my co-worker. I drove there and ordered two of the same cheesesteaks - no fries or drink, to go. It took over 30 minutes from the time i place the order until the time i left. There aren't enough tables and there were flies flying around the drink machine.
