We visited the castle on a Sunday around noon. Semi busy and we saw a couple of guided tours. 4 levels that were accessible via a spiral staircase. (Elevator was available also). Restrooms were located in the lower level. Tight spiral staircase with the lower level having a Dungeon atmosphere. We enjoyed the period paintings both on the walls and ceilings (some were breathtaking). The Castle has housed the Museum of National history (since 1878) with a collection that presents 500 years of Danish history. The furniture, Grand rooms, Knights armor and overall decorations transport you back to a time long ago. My only wish would have been to have more posted information/signage about what was in view. There is also a Church attached/next door which wasn't open to the public when we first arrived as there was a wedding. Opened up when we finished our Castle tour so we walked next door and spent some time there. Organ was playing so it added to the peaceful vibe and complemented the architectural beauty. It took us about 1.5 hours for Castle and Church although we didn't explore the grounds and the garden area in the back -so would recommend 2.5 to 3 hours for all. Saw a small Cafe. Service minded people were helping visitors with questions and ticket purchases. Really impressed by this Castle as well Hillerød. read more

Lots to see. The castle is very elaborate and ornate. Of you're in a Copenhagen, you should definitely visit.

I absolutely LOVED this castle, it's is sooo beautiful and GIGANTIC! This is the palace for the Danish royal family for many many years. The grounds are huge, the palace is huge and does take alot of time to go through. From Central Station by train, it does take about an hour to get here and a 15min walk to get to the castle. Admission is included in the Copenhagen card which is convenient. The castle has a huge collection of art work, artifacts and beautiful wall and ceiling paintings that are well preserved. Lot of portraits of previous kings, queens, princes, and princesses. It gives a really good idea of how the royal family lived back in the days. Truly a beatiful piece of architecture, and a must visit if you are in Copenhagen. read more

This is a review for a castle visit on May 19, 2017. Took a 40+ minute train ride from Copenhagen Central to the Hillerod station where you can hop on the 301 or 302 bus to get to the castle. It was clear when we left Copenhagen and drizzling when we arrived in Hiilerod, thus jumped on the bus. Train ride and castle entrance fee covered by the Copenhagen Card. Boat ride on the lake is also free with the card. Frederiksborg Slot is an impressive castle with walled fortications including a drawbridge over the requisite moat, courtyard with a masculine fountain of strength in the center, tall spires, intimate chapel, large garden with a flowing canal down the center and of course, a Grand Ballroom. This castle fits all of the pre-requisites for your Hollywood reinforced image of what a castle should be. LOL. Honestly, this is an impressive castle and if you visit only one castle outside of Central Copenhagen, visit Frederiksborg since it is home to the National Museum. Tapestries, paintings, furniture, statues, weapons, globes, etc.. abound in this castle. Castle was rebuilt by the Carlsburg Brewery family. Kudos to their benevolence. read more

Ooh la la. Every time I visit a castle I pretend I am in a Disney movie. You can certainly do so here. We really had to hustle to stay with our group, manageable size at 8-10, but accounting for bathroom breaks....God forbid you want to browse the gift shop. If you're not rushing and it's summer or late spring, please go frolick in the garden for me it looked lovely from afar. The chapel and grand ballroom (portraits of royalty found here and throughout this castle) were not to be missed. There are loads of coats of arms in the chapel, look for some important names (Eisenhower, Churchill, Mandela, DeGaulle, etc). Near the ballroom there were some nice miniatures, too. Loads of furnishings and paintings. Audio guide was useful for explaining these. Note room numbers over entries/on top of doorjambs as you enter and exit different rooms. Big place, give yourself time, please. read more

If you take the guided tour you are out of luck. Maybe the royals where there as the guards basically said i couldnt step to the courtyard and could only see the gardens. Boo. Go to Hillerod and see that castle instead. Even without a tour its way more picturesque and accessible. read more

A great palace as far as palaces go. There's the gold, check; the opulence, check; the tragic stories, check; and the fire, check; and the beautiful courtyard, check. Oh, and the gift shop. And of course, there's the gold covered church to make sure no gets past the eye of the needle, LOL. 5 stars. read more

Are you super interested in big drafty castles where people pretty out-of-touch with any sense of reality played dress up and had parties? This is the place for you! There's a lot of really great artwork inside and that's worth the visit for those of us who roll our eyes at the whole royalty thing. As with everywhere else in Denmark, there's no place in here where you can find a frosty beverage to sip on while you take it all in and they probably wouldn't let you stroll through sipping one of the lukewarm sodas that you can get to drink. I guess I sound like a curmudgeon here but I honestly really enjoy seeing things of historical significance but I lean way harder toward significant world history than I do toward lifestyles of the dead rich and famous. read more

Take advantage of The Copenhagen Card because the train to here and the admission to the castle are free (to all the castles, train and metro.) This palace is absolutely breath taking. Every floor and the garden are stunning and so grand. I felt so regal. Highly recommend this place! read more

Rosenborg, Christianborg...then Frederiksborg Sløt, and that's the order of impressiveness, by Frederiksborg wins by far. It's a wonderful day trip, be sure to take note of my protip later. TRAVELING Take the train to Hillerød (depending on where you are, you are traveling a lot of zones. Up until they stop circulating the clipcards, or klipkorts, get the 10-clip 5-zone passes). We started at central and got on. You get out of the station, go straight, pass a cemetary, take a right, and then left when the road forks. Continue on and then you'll come into a little cutesy town square. Walk down it until you hit the lake, and then circle right and wind towards the castle. Admission is 60DKK for students, 75DKK for adults. There's a national history museum inside with regards to the royal family with tons of portraits, and various artifacts (the most beautiful ones are the clocks and astrological globes...HNNGGG). Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes, because there are pebbles and cobblestones everywhere. PROTIP Always check weather first. Pack a lunch and sit on the amazing grass after winding through the gardens and looking at the lake. Bonus if you pack cards, booze, and a mini speakerbox. This was one of the reasons why I began to like Copenhagen. read more

Yes it burned down, yes it was restored by a beer baron, yes it is one of the most spectacular sights that you can see in Denmark. Truly one of the most over the top and fantastical castles in all of Europe, Frederiksborg will not disappoint. From one of the nicest private chapels in Europe to a garden that will simply take your breath away, take care to spend time at this museum as a rush tour will only leave you wanting more. At only 1/2 hour from the heart of Copenhagen it's an easy trip and we'll worth the time and money spent to get there. read more

Frederiksborg Castle is a 17th century Renaissance castle that was the home of Christian IV. It is a truly magnificent castle with impressive grounds that you can stroll at you leisure. The inside of the castle is as impressive as the outside. The rooms are fully furnished with period furniture and art. You will be overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of the interior. Plan to spend at least three hours visiting this castle. read more

Frederiksborg Castle was the best of the castles (compared to Christiansborg and Rosenborg) I saw on my trip. Taking the train there from Copenhagen was easy but it took over an hour. The castle has a lot of beautiful rooms and it's full of history. The history museum is on the upper level of the castle and it's very well done. The castle gardens are beautiful too. There is also a ferry that goes around the castle. I didn't do the ferry as it was very windy. This castle is also covered on the Copenhagen Card. Highly recommend! read more

I'm a sucker for old castles. One of the huge perks of moving to Europe for me is getting to see all of these incredible castles. Frederiksborg Slot was first on my list to visit since moving to DK and I was not disappointed. First, definitely take into account the weather like another reviewer mentioned. It was bright and sunny when we left central CPH but cloudy and gloomy when we got to Hillerød. My husband and I ended up getting rained out so we weren't able to tour the gardens but that just means we get to visit again later this year! (And when the garden is in full bloom!) Also, another tip: walk through the town to the castle instead of taking the bus (unless it's raining of course). The shopping area was cute and quaint and provided a great front view of the entire castle. Now, to the actual Frederiksborg Slot... we didn't take the guided tour because we arrived a little later in the day so I can't really comment on it, but we thoroughly enjoyed the castle without it. There are rooms upon rooms of beautiful portraits both big and small of the Royal family and various historic Danes. You could literally spend all day (or maybe even a few days) looking at every single painting not to mention the beautifully painted/carved ceilings. The furniture is also very well preserved with some clocks even still operating! But the two highlights for me and I am sure, most people, were the Chapel and Great Hall. These were just two completely stunning rooms that took you back in time. I could stay in the Great Hall all day imagining all of the special dances that used to take place there. They have done a marvelous job retaining the beauty of Frederiksborg Slot. It's well worth the ~hour long train ride... and I haven't even explored the beautiful gardens yet! Just go! It's definitely a must-see. read more

Touring castles has always been on my bucket list so when the opportunity came to visit Copenhagen I knew it was something that I had to add to my itinerary. We first visited Kronborg on our castle tour. I thought Kronborg was great until I walked up to Frederiksborg. WOW!!!! Absolutely beautiful. Just breathtaking. And that was just the immaculate exterior of the castle. Once inside I continued to be very impressed. We first toured the church inside the castle. AH-MAZING. The church looks like something out of a fairytale. The amount of detail throughout the church is just astounding. We then continued on to other rooms in the castle. Another very impressive room is the ballroom of course. But there is so much more to see. The amount of art on display is quite astounding. I just wish we had more time to explore the castle and the gardens. If I ever find myself back in Copenhagen I will definitely plan another trip to Frederiksborg. read more
