Located in rural remoteness of an old church in what was the heart of a long abandoned 1800's grindstone quarry operation, the owners Michael and Carrie Zaitz have created an artist oasis at the tip of the thumb. We stumbled upon the White Church Gallery while exploring Grindstone City's two popular ice cream shops; the Grindstone General Store and Rybak's Ice Cream Store. The gallery is across the street from Rybak's. Little did I know but the gallery opened this year on July 7, 2015. Doing a search on Yelp showed that White Church Gallery is the sole Art Gallery in the Thumb. The uniqueness of the restored church and remoteness of location makes it an amazing place. Carrie told me that they had to totally renovate the church. "Mother Nature had taken over." She indicated. They have been working on the Gallery for over three and a half years. The center piece of this renovated church is a beautifully restored quatrefoil stained glass window at the front of the gallery crafted by Tom Newton. You can sit on a the pews of the old church at Rybak's Ice Cream on the front porch. Carrie has pictures of the renovation process on her gallery's blog. The gallery has works displayed of fifteen artists in various mediums. Most notable are Joe Flosky's stained glass, Pat Hardin's cartoons, Duane Bilyeu's woodwork and turnings, Laura Landrum's jewelry, Susan Drescher's eco-friendly furniture and decorative products, Carolyn Kinnison's textured paintings using layers of paint and finishes over molding compound on wood Bill Stolpin's paintings and resident artist, Michael Zaitz abstract and surrealism works. When you first walk into the gallery it's like stepping into a different world. The unique colors and subtle light treatment show off the various art work. Everywhere you turn there is something to explore. I'm certain that the White Church Gallery will not be the sole art gallery in the Upper Thumb for long. However it will stand alone as being the first in the area with a powerful debut. The gallery is located five minutes east of Port Austin at 8686 Rouse Road.

Buckham regularly hosts Second Friday Art Walk receptions, along with the other local galleries downtown, like GFAC. Sometimes they host spoken word or poetry readings or, on rare occasion, an interpretive dance recital. It's really a great space for showcasing local art talent and, as one of the city's non-profits, they manage to do a lot with a little- no small feat in this day and age, and particularly in this city. It's a testament to the changing times in Flint and our city's dedication to both promoting and preserving the arts downtown. Whenever I attend one of their Art Walk receptions, I always run into a number of Flint-town regulars that I know from around our colorful downtown landscape. They serve appetizers and beer and wine at their receptions, so donations are always welcome to help defray costs, but it is not something that is pushed. Great art, great scene, great people. Some of the art exhibitions here will often be a bit quirkier than those at GFAC, but it's the ingenuity and independent spirit that drives this gallery. Once, my husband and I saw a Twinkie-themed art installation project here. Now that's entertaining!

The crowd at Buckham is filled with eccentric, free-spirited, creative types. I've seen the most unusual art shows here, but most have actually been very entertaining. Lots of upcycled "dumpster" art along with more mainstream photography and paintings. It's always surprising. The art is thought-provoking and gets people talking and that's what art is supposed to do- get people discussing it and looking at things in a different light. It's always fun to see everyone crowding around talking about the fusing of art, politics and commerce during art walk with a glass of wine in hand. Admission is free. Patrons may rent the space out for private events, too.

The taut athletic body of his polished bronze 'Torso of a Dancer' just pulled me in. I never forgot it. There is a slightly different version on display here, too. The gigantic space at this museum that holds Fredericks' works is overwhelmingly packed. (Be careful not to poke an eye out on a protruding arm, leg or toe.) Filled with white plaster originals, this marbled space is a fitting tribute to this prolific artist whose works dotted public spaces in the US. His idealized, hopeful figures captured the energy of post-war America. Obviously, to Detroiters, Fredericks is best known for the 'Spirit of Detroit' sculpture at the base of Woodward Avenue. The original plaster version is here and it's great to get a closer look at this iconic work. I was also fascinated with another smaller gallery that holds over 300 objects from the late artist's sculpture studio. It's enough to get a good sense of his working environment. Housed on the university campus, this museum also has some outdoor sculptures, too. Is it worth the drive from Detroit to check out this collection? Definitely.
