Womens' bathroom: The bathrooms do not have a changing table (where are you supposed to change a baby!?!), the toilet paper is almost always out, the bathroom garbage overflowing, at least one toilet is typically clogged and soap is typically not stocked. The water fountain is disgusting. For an afternoon hockey game, only one heater is typically turned on so you can't actually be on the same side of the team you're routing for. The bleachers are literally the most disgusting bleachers I have ever seen in my life and they are always littered with various types of garbage. The glass has cracks on it, and the boards that cover the space between the rink and the bleachers are broken. As far as the ice goes, it looks worse than the Pens and Flyers ice during the rain last weekend in February 2019. It's super choppy and uneven, and you can see how the players have trouble skating on it.

Technically this is "the Schenectady County Recreational Facility" even though there is exactly one…read moreactivity here, ice skating, so for once I won't submit a correction to the yelpbase. This is a sort of bare-bones rink, but it's quite decent and very much a recreational bargain as the somewhat higher-overhead winter-sports venues go. We shall start off with the good: the rink is in excellent shape and the ice maintenance appears to be stellar. Open public skates haven't been too crowded, so you don't have the problem of not actually being able to find space to skate. They have active hockey programs run by a private group, and a Learn to Skate program for all levels including adults, from age 4 and up. The public skating hours are a bit odd: 11-1 on weekdays (so no after school skating or evenings) and 2-4 on Saturday and Sunday (call to check or go to the county website). At this writing skate rentals are $3 and open ice fees $4, which is decent bang for the buck but not as cheap as a walk in the park. They do seem to have a year-round schedule but I could be wrong about that. The facility is, as noted, bare bones, and it feels a lot older somehow that it actually is. The seating area (for hockey or watching others skate) is basic bleachers and is not large but is nicely heated, so that beats watching soccer in November outside. There is a snack bar, but it's your basic junk food (although $1 coffee and instant hot chocolate provide a little warming). The entry way is very basic, there's no coat hanging area or check, and the bench areas for putting your skates on and off and the like are kind of crammed into the front part of the oval; it wasn't well designed for the flow of traffic with winter gear and walking off ice with skates, so there are traffic jams at the rink entrance. And there's no shop; how the county missed the revenue opportunity is beyond me, but they didn't build any space for one. So you have to buy skates and gear elsewhere and have your sharpening done. The rental skates, which we're not really using anymore now we bought some used ones, are a bit dodgy as rental skates usually are, but I've seen a lot worse. Tip: you can get here by turning into the "entrance" for Schenectady County Airport off 50, and it will loop you around the back. If you miss the entrance there are signs for the "Ice Rink" on Tower Rd. I'll try to review the Messa Rink at Union College for public skating as well, and the Apples-to-Apples comparison here is that I think Messa's a little nicer and has a somewhat more involved Learn to Skate program (as well as a dollar cheaper for public skating) but has more limited hours and is harder to get to because of the schlep you have to make from parking across the Union campus, but there isn't a huge differentiator once you're out on the ice. -- Update: so there's no entry in the Yelp base for the rink at Union, so for now, assuming those who want to ice skate in the area are reading this review for options, I'll add Messa's basic information here until the Yelpbase catches up: PUBLIC SKATING Sundays, 2-3:45p; Mon, Wed, Fri, 12-1:30p $3 for skate rental, $3 for entry To get to Messa, you go to the intersection of Van Vranken and Nott in Schenectady, turn into what is called "Alexander Lane" and the rink is on your left about 200 yards in. However, parking is restricted everywhere, your best bet for public parking is to enter "Gracie Lane" off Nott, directly opposite Peter Pause, and walk uphill to the rink.

That being said they are not babysitters and children who are not able to skate independently and safely need to be supervised. The skates are good, but don't hesitate to make them aware if the laces need to be tweaked or replaced. There are very few things for minors to do in any direction and for very long distances, but even if there were more choices this destination should top your list. It's affordable, a healthy way to spend a few hours and fun memories to be made. They also do a wonderful birthday party during open hours or schedule a private time.

For tubing, you purchase a ticket for a 2 hour block. They offer a lodge area with picnic bench style seating and have live music. They also have a full service bar area serving up adult beverages in addition to some hot chocolate and coffee. There's an outdoor seating area with adirondack chairs and fire pits if you're into taking a break or just kicking back and relaxing. Staff is helpful and friendly. On a Saturday, snow tubing tickets were $33, which is about on par with other tubing places in the area.

I use to love skating as a kid, but it is definitely hard to find skate places that don't make you feel dirty walking in. This place is it, it's still retro, well maintained with polite efficient staff both on and off the rink. They have a cute little toddler corner for them to skate their little hearts out. Respectful skaters and patient by standards the few time I busted my behind. They have skate crutches for 5 bucks. It's worth it. I asked about if there's any plans for merchant services in the future so I can return without having to pay an ATM fee. They acted insulted and told me absolutely not there is no need for it. I was a little confused cause of how inconvenient it was for me. The customer. The one who pays. But ok. Then we rent the skates and walk in. To say this place is falling apart is an understatement. The ceilings are falling down and appear to have black mold in ten corner. There were two buckets hanging from the ceiling to collect water from rainfall. Under the bucket the floor was a wet puddle and warped from it happening over time. All the paint is chipping. It smelled horrendous. Maybe some credit card scanners wouldn't kill you to allow more customers through the door to fix this place up. To say the least. We will NEVER return. I made that clear to the kiddos. Never.

Capital Arena features two NHL-size ice rinks and offers year-round skating activities. Public skating times are available Saturday and Sunday between 2 and 4 pm. This was my first time visiting in over 20 years, which is terrible considering I lived right down the street and brought my son to the Commons frequently. They seemed mainly for the kids, but they were helpful none the less and made my experience much enjoyable! I got to zip through the rink even though I didn't know how to skate properly. It was a Wednesday around 5pm, so the sun had already set. With the surrounding buildings and Christmas tree lighting up the area, this place makes a really great date night. Rentals are only $4 and the rink is free. It's open until March 11, 2018, so get your skating in! The only issue I had was that they didn't resurface the rink the whole 2 hours I was there which made it difficult to skate at some point. This is an amazing place, and I hope they fix that blip.

It was a little small and doesn't get Zamboni enough for the amount of carving on the ice, I suggest go early in the morning or right at 4pm when it got Zamboni at 3pm... 1pm was a terrible time to go since it was the worst, super rough. My first pair of skates were dull and I thought my skating skills went downhill but after a few laps I exchanged it for a better pair that were smooth on the ice.
