I've heard about the FoxTown Factory Stores for years but never bothered to go until today. As everything was closed in Zürich for May 1st, I decided to tag along with some friends. I was a bit skeptical at whether I would find any good deals as compared to outlet shopping in the U.S., but I thought I might as well check it out just in case.
Well, it takes about 3.5 hours each way to go from Zürich to Mendrisio by train, and even with the 9'clock travelpass with Halb-tax discount, it still cost SFr. 58.-, so this was a pricey and time-consuming way to look for some shopping deals.
There are a LOT of stores, and they have a range of stuff, from the high-end designer fashions to the more "regular" lines.
Unfortunately, this trip was kind of a bust. I didn't find anything spectacular enough to shell out my hard-earned money for. Most of the stuff seemed overpriced or ugly or not suitable for me. I think usually it's a bit tough to shop at outlets because they usually have old merchandise that doesn't sell in the regular stores, right? So it's all the weird stuff in weird styles or colors or sizes that most people wouldn't buy.
My friend did buy a lovely Burberry trench coat, but at the marked down price of SFr. 900.-, that was way too expensive for me. So the only thing I ended up buying there was lunch (tuna salad with iced green tea for SFr. 11.-), a very yummy Zuppa Inglese gelato cone for SFr. 3.-, and a bottle of bubbly water for SFr. 2.50.
I felt kind of lame for traveling all the way out there and not buying anything, but I didn't want to waste my money for something I didn't want anyway. But it was still cool for a day trip to hang out with friends and check it out. Plus, we had a nice little stop in Lugano to walk around and ride the funicular. And now I have confirmed that mall shopping in the U.S. is WAY better than it is in Switzerland, so I never need to go back to FoxTown again. ;) read more
