There is a prayer team, next to the loud worship band at the end of the service - is there a quieter place to do this? The prayer team from what I learned at a new member dinner at the pastors house does not get together or receive emails to pray over the prayer requests, although there is a prayer request form on the website. The pastor seems to have anxiety pacing at the end of a service and does not talk with anyone. There are great community groups to belong to. The elders of the church are all men, families with young children and all best friends. The pastor is part owner of a coffee shop that serves alcohol a few evenings a week- two locations. Sorry enabling people to drink when there is a Celebrate Recovery offered at either location is a major conflict of interest.

It has solar panels on its roof and is a progressive more liberal church than others I have experienced. The community is open and friendly to newcomers, without being overly so. If you are a new face in the service, expect a few people to say hello and introduce themselves. You will not feel overwhelmed by everybody in the sanctuary coming to get your vital statistics. Lake Park is Reconciling in Christ Church, which means the LGBT community id a full part of the congregation. For some churches this is just a label, here it is part of the mission. If you grew up unchurched, you will feel comfortable in the service. Everything is laid out in a straight forward manner so you can follow along. If you grew up as a Lutheran like I did, it will be familiar to you, but not quite as you remember it. While it is a liturgical service, don't expect the Lutheran service of your childhood. Parts of the liturgy have been removed from regular rotation; confession and the creed and not done every week. I am sure there is a theological reason for this, I am just not aware of it. Be prepared for active children in the service. Many parents bring their kids with them to worship. While they will not screaming or running up and down the aisles (most of the time); you will know that they are there. There is a nursery available to those who want it; children form 6 months to 6 years are welcome. Many parents feel there children belong in the service with them. My wife and I originally felt this way, but our daughter now goes to the nursery each Sunday. Other peoples kids don't bother me, but my own makes it so I can't concentrate. The staff of the nursery is paid, background checked and all over 18. If there is a reason your child needs you, they will find you. You sign your child in and out so that they are accounted for. The staff is outstanding and always great with the kids. My daughter can be pretty clingy while there, and they handle it great while still paying attention to all the kids that are there. The key difference with Congregationalism is that there is no governing hierarchy. Each church governs itself. Congregationalism values each persons individuality on their faith journey, and ability to think for themselves. My husband and I come from different religious backgrounds and this church really met both of our spiritual needs. Another thing I love about this church is it's Community Through Understanding Program, dedicated to bridging the gaps in understanding and developing relationships with our diverse faith community. The congregation governs the church so it's a very democratic place to worship. It's family friendly, supportive of helping others in need through mission work and in 2018 started a program, "Community Through Understanding," which promotes developing relationships with those of different beliefs. We have found First Church helps us broaden and enrich our spiritual lives. We are better people because of our experience there.

As we waited for the service to begin, Pastor Joshua stopped by to introduce himself and talk about the Church/Service. We enjoyed greatly the Worship Music and the morning's message/sermons from Pastor Joshua and his wife Pastor Emily were biblical, passionate and uplifting. From the first day we walked into the way church, we have felt welcome and friendly like a home. Every Sunday morning, we always have fun at the way church. We love pastor Josh and Emily, and their two adorable children. We also made a lot of great friends there. After 2-year effort, we have had our first kid. I believe our daughter is the gift from God, she is the answer of our prayers at the way church. She will be growing with the Way Church together, she has so many lovely cousins, uncles/aunts as well as grandparents at church watching her growing, how wonderful it is! Music is performed by a band on stage and the music is modern. 2 large projector screens display messages being delivered and the band/pastor preaching the word. Not your typical church setup -- no stained glass or mural style painting here. Dramatic lighting and a large cross set the scene for the theater style stage. Pastor Mike is very good at what he does. Admits flaws and speaks his opinion but knows there can be multiple interpretations to everything. Very personable. Great mix of funny and thoughtful in delivering his sermons that always keep me intrigued. I would recommend Northbrook to anyone looking to hear the word of God in a very inviting environment.
