The Seminoles were the only Native American tribe never to sign a peace treaty with the US government. They come from a small band of around 200 people led by Sam Jones who helped them to hide out in the Everglades to avoid capture by the US government in the early 1800's to a Hard Rock empire with more than 500 million dollars a year in gambling profits from their casinos today. Located in Hollywood near the Hard Rock Hotel on the Seminole Reservation is the Seminole Okalee Indian Village Museum. Created in 1960, it was where the Seminole used to have a village where they would have education, alligator wrestling and animal displays. Today the main museum, Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki is located in Big Cypress Preserve in Clewiston. The Seminole Okalee Indian Village and Museum reopened in 2005 and serves as a branch of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki to preserve the culture and heritage of the Seminole people. The small museum has displays containing clothing, tools, and animals. They also have chickee huts, festival grounds, and a small event stadium. In honor of November Native Heritage Month the museum was hosting a Pow Wow and marketplace. To quote the Seminoles "Thank you to the creator for making such a beautiful day for all of us to share in the Seminole people's heritage."

But there's really nothing much to really see here except for 3 rooms of exhibits on the entire property, ...and I think it's ridiculous that they're even charging the public for any of this at all. The pioneer houses behind the school are still completely closed from any public access from what ...I've noticed based on other reviews and from what I actually saw with my own eyes. It's been YEARS. That too was certainly a let down. There was nothing more to see in the abandoned ...library downstairs or even upstairs in the wedding area. So creepy! I could only access three tiny rooms filled with rich history in writing and pictures along the walls and some artifacts. The classroom was my best experience. I found it extremely interesting to have seen the pictures ...of so many children that came to this school from the 1920s until the 80s! And they even had some of the original desks against the wall by the windows ...inside of the classroom, whereas the main ones in the middle were all donations. So basically I paid $3 admission with their food stamps discount to view all 3 of their tiny rooms; $1 per room hahaha! There's not much to see here, so I'm just warning you guys. They also ONLY allow field trip kids to tour the school in the mornings and then they close ...very early by 3 which made me have to make a second trip here on another day. The parking lot was completely empty with the exception of an elderly couple that pulled up ...as one of the employees escorted me to view the school building. Aside from all of this, everything that WAS on display was fairly enjoyable.

I came in with kid class for a field trip and all the host were very sweet a patient. The kids first activity was to learn on why and who decided to turn the Everglades into farms and why the canals were created. Then the kids made butter with heavy whipping cream and we got to try it with crackers. Next stop was an old school classroom where they were tough how to use a quail pen with ink. They got to write or draw on a paper with the pen and ink. They went 2 other rooms That they shared some history about the farmers and stores. After that they got water from a well. And then finally they washed clothes by hand. Overall it was pretty interesting.

I followed the signs once inside the Park and if you head to your first right at the very end of the parking lot to the east end is the Garden Club. Since coming back home today I explored their website WWW.FLGC.ORG and it gives a little more insight as well as calendar of events that are now held on Zoom due to Covid. As I took the paths in the gardens I got to see some familiar plants and trees and some new ones too. I especially am fond of the bromeliads and they had a couple varieties that I have not seen nor do I have in my gardens. The colors were brilliant and really added to an enjoyable walk. I also saw a Jamaican Croton that I have not seen in years. I had one many years ago at my last home and gardens but find they are not readily available to buy. Loved taking photos that I shared on this page for future reference and inspiration for my own gardens. Definitely will return for one of their Events after Covid has ended. In the meantime I will definitely check out their website for their next events.

The staff & volunteers are very friendly and professional. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and the artist that helped us with our project is very skilled. We had such a great experience. It's a medium-sized location, and I pray that one day, they can have a bigger location to keep displaying all of the Caribbean islands' history and artifacts.
