Sawadsee, Lutterworth
Quite simply the worst Thai restaurant I have ever visited, and possibly the worst restaurant of any cuisine. Truly memorable in its awfulness.
Chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves was red raw; I made the mistake of eating one piece and it tasted very wrong indeed.
Musaman curry had potatoes so overcooked and dry they almost powdered, while the sauce had the feel of something by Uncle Ben, rustled up by a three year old.
Perhaps the most 'memorable' of the dishes was the pad thai - a vast plate of noodles in ketchup, perilously balanced above an unnecessary heating candle that slowly burned the middle of the dish.
All this in an ambience of laboratory-level brightness (how I missed that first piece of raw chicken I don't know) and a head waiter who said we were lucky to be given a table. How wrong he was.
It was a Friday night, the place was busy - how, I don't know; perhaps there aren't many options in Lutterworth - but please, do yourself a favour and pass this one by. I've been lucky enough to travel to Thailand and eat at a few good thai restaurants, and this place has the all the thai charm of a nineteen seventies motorway services.
