My wife and I decided to try out Fortune for our New Year's Day dinner. It was a pleasant surprise. I have the egg fo young house special dinner while she had the "House Delight" dinner. Both were excellent. I especially liked the egg fo young. It is the first time, locally, that it's been prepared and the patties were exceptionally fluffy. I opted for the egg roll as an appetizer and it was great. Next we had the "Hot and Sour" soup which, also, more than met our expectations. Told her will not move since we are seated and have children. No large party came in after us. I was not happy that she would even suggested we move. Food. Now this, THIS, is my ultimate and forever favorite restaurant: Fortune Chinese in west allis. This place is time after time, without fail, insanely good. They have both a Chinese and an American menu which just really shows you how far from it's original state Chinese food in America has become. Granted I order things from both menus so the American one isn't all bad. The pictures above and following descriptions are of the 3 things I always order from this place and would recommend you to try as well, the trifecta. First, the potstickers from the American menu, they are the doughiest little dumplings I've ever had but doughey in the best way. They are filled with the standard pork and chive but the outside is just the best part I cannot stress enough that you must try these dumplings. Second, the pork noodles (found on the Chinese menu) they have pieces of traditional Cantonese barbecued pork, mushrooms and green onions served over rice noodles and all sautéed in a soy sauce. I've been eating these as long as I can remember and they are absolutely incredible. Such a simple dish but so, so delicious. Finally, the spicy salt and pepper fish. If you're not a fan of spice this may not be for you but you should still try it because we live in Wisconsin and this is basically asian fish fry . I'm not sure what type of fish is used in this and I don't care to ask but whatever it is it's incredibly buttery and soft and crispy in all the right ways, topped with jalapeños and green onions for an added bit of flavor. The portions here are also massive so yay for leftovers! Came here on a rainy Tuesday night, and the place was pretty full. We were seated relatively quickly because we weren't ready to order the first time, had to wait quite awhile before the waitress was ready to come back. Now, I know that this is a biased system, but when I go to some restaurants that are not catered towards service (such as a $$$$ hotel restaurant), my Yelp scale changes a bit. In terms of food, I agree that the red menu is the way to go. We ordered a shrimp/smelt/squid/fish in dried salt and pepper as well as a boiled fish with chili. Both of these dishes were delicious and the portions were very generous for decent prices. At the end, we had a few slices of oranges and a fortune cookie to finish out the meal. This is a difficult review to write because I'm in general not a huge fan of Chinese food from restaurants. They all kind of taste the same to me. That being said, my parents love this place and think it's one of the best in the area. The food is always hot and the portions are huge. At some point after moving to Milwaukee on July 1, 2013 - I realized that the inevitable journey would have to begin. Maybe "pilgrimage" is a better term, and not even for myself, but for my nice little future round-eye wiffy who has more of an interest in authentic Chinese cooking that I have interest in custard and bacon cheeseburgers. Which is...quite high in magnitude. So since we were already at Miller Park on Labor Day of 2013, we thought that we'd give this place a try. Location: 2.5 out of 5 While ~10 miles isn't what I would consider to be "close" (juxtaposed against the fact that Jing's just a few blocks away, but more on this establishment on a later date) to where we live, the area isn't that bad if you happen to be running errands/out for entertainment on the western outskirts of the city already. It happens to be across from another strip mall complex with institutions like BW3, Pet world, etc. Free parking lot, as you might expect. Customer service: 4 out of 5 I'll admit it - I knowingly played the race card just a tiny bit. Since Mandarin is at least the most-understood by all ethnic Chinese people, I greeted the ladies as such, and we were treated well the entire time. I mean, not significantly better than any of the other customers there, but perhaps things went smoothly because there was less confusion about menu items/portion sizes/included items. They were quick to refill our water and quite nice about asking if we were doing alright the entire time. One gripe that I historically have with authentic Chinese restaurants is that they typically have very little understanding of when things should come out. While they list things as "appetizers" or "entrees", it can be a real crap shoot as to when you get the items you order. By accident or by design, our appetizer was actually brought out first and was followed up by the entrees. Selection of Chinese menu items: 3 out of 5 I understand that it's technically infeasible and too resource intense to adopt the Cheesecake Factory mentality where you can order all SORTS of stuff from different sub-genres of the same overarching food genre, and this was demonstrated by Fortune, but oddly so. The appetizer selection, while covering items such as bbq pork and duck, jellyfish, and Asian cold cuts - was oddly missing items such as soup dumplings, pot stickers, etc. Similarly, while the noodles and rice dishes offered authentic favorites like pickled mustard greens and pork noodle soup and variations on familiar Asian pop up restaurant rice noodles, lacked a common staple of dan dan noodle, which looking through their ingredient list, should not be a legitimate omission. Overall, your parents would tell you to your face that they disapprove and/or complain, but on the inside would be maybe 55 - 60% happy at the choices. If you happen to be a "bad Asian kid" like me and grew up eating the stuff, you wouldn't give a rat's tail about your mom's passive aggressiveness, and probably be at least 70 - 80% happy with the choices. Like I said...I noticed two staples missing, notably the dan dan noodle and soup dumplings. I even asked specifically if they had the soup dumplings, to no avail. Speaking of - if you happen to be able to speak with the people that work there, there's nothing wrong with asking for specific items that you'd like to eat. For example - they asked me if I wanted bok choy (sorta out of the blue) and I said, "No, but if you have snow pea leaves, I'll take those." Done and done...even without the leaves being specifically on the Chinese menu. Authenticity of Chinese menu items: 4.25 out of 5 Granted, you have to put this in the context that I was born in Taiwan and have spent the majority of my life the United States with a 10 year stint in Chicago that afforded me a highly above average exposure to Chinese cuisine from different regional perspectives. If you happen to be FOB/FOPlane, you may be a little bit more discerning with your palette. The bbq duck/pork app platter was not unpleasant in the least, but two slight criticisms: - the pork was slightly overcooked, and while the duck was moist, the skin wasn't as crispy as I've come to love. The snow pea leaves were sauteed well without being overly greasy, and while I like the salt/pepper combo with a kick of jalapeno, I overdid it by ordering both smelt and eggplant cooked in this manner. Next time around, I'd probably go for the more traditionally stewed type eggplant technique with that black bean paste/sauce. Value: 4.5 out of 5 Very generous portion sizes combined with the overall taste of the menu items I had today make for a decidedly positive value metric. Decor: 3 out of 5 Laquered chairs, goofy colored booths, walls adorned with mementos of bygone times in different places, bamboo plants, etc. The only thing they were missing were the disposable paper tablecloths and a waving cat. Crispy duck - Great Noodle soup with duck - great Prawns with garlic - excellent Steamed mussels with black bean - great ******Update- We went to Fortune with some friends who love Chinese food who just moved to Milwaukee 6 months ago. Why I have never been impressed with the level of service the food was always great. This time the service and food were terrible! We waited more than an hour to just get 4 soups. The waitress spoke very little English. I asked about the order after 45 minutes and was told that the Chinese people come first because they have much bigger orders. I pointed out 5 tables that were already served entrees and her response was unbelievable to me. " they got a $1,000.00 bill, they come first. Then I pointed to several other tables. I went to the hostess stand and asked to speak to the owner. She came out from the back and said " yes " I said that I would like to speak to her about being treated rudely and the fact that the food, not even the soup has come out. What the Milwaukee area is really lacking are restaurants serving authentic cuisine from the Far East. At least, we have Chinese covered with Fortune. The cuisine here is the closest thing you can find to a restaurant in like a SF or NY Chinatown. Like what previous Yelpers have mentioned, there are two menus - a "Chinese" one with more "authentic" fare and another for those who aren't as adventurous. I do have to note that their Chinese menu is rather tame.......they do have pig intestines, but not things like chicken feet or pig stomach. I've been here many times over the years - both for dine-in and takeout. Ever since I was a kid, one of my favorite Chinese dishes all-time is chow fun, or stir fried wide rice noodles. I believe Fortune may be one of the few places in the area that offers it on their menus. Although it's not the best I've had, it definitely is very good and satisfying. I tend to opt for the beef, which is accompanied by green onions. There's always a grease factor involved with these noodles, but I've never gotten an order swimming in oil, like in some Chinatown restaurants. Another dish I tend to order is the Chinese version of fried chicken - marinated chicken fried with the skin on. It's served with a side of a peppered salt, as well as shrimp chips. Ten dollars will get you a half chicken. The chicken here has always been pretty consistent.......juicy and never over fried. In addition to the chicken, you can get the typical BBQ meats that could be found at windows of Chinese restaurants in Chinatown.......roast duck and BBQ pork. Be sure to order a Chinese veggie dish while you're here. The garlic sautéed snow pea leaves seem to always be available, and are delicious. As well, they do often have Chinese broccoli, which in my view, kicks regular broccoli's ass! Chinese broccoli can be made with a beef stir fry or solo with oyster sauce. It can have a slight bitterness to it, so don't expect anything like American broccoli. Don't expect to get stellar Ritz Carlton level service at Fortune. It is a Chinese restaurant! Unlike Chinatown restaurant that want your ass out of their restaurant ASAP, Fortune does actually provide relatively good service. You won't always get a smile, but your water glasses will always be full and food will be served promptly. Plus, they don't tend to get pissed off at you when you request more rice! read more

I didn't want to give any star in fact. I have been to this place a few times. The owners and waiter/waitresses are all chinese. Their services are horrible. No smile, and rather rude... I don't think they want any tips. They LIE!! They play scams on you so you spend more money than you should. 1st scheme: Add tips onto the bill already but they won't tell you! And they wrote in chinese or in such sloppy handwriting that you can't tell, so you add more tips in, and thus you double tip them! 2nd scheme: If you order those meals for two people, and want to change one of the meals to a different dish, they would say yes. But they will charge you differently for different dishes that you ask every time, and they won't tell you how much they charge. I usually get charged extra $2 for a dish, the other day they charged me an extra $8 without telling me! They didn't even apologize when I pointed out that they didn't let me know. I used to tell all my friends to go there, but now I would recommend that you don't try this place out so you won't feel like you've been taken advantage of. read more

OK I saw four stars for 29 reviews and I would end up there one day. I had the lunch special so I could sample the egg roll, fried rice and main dish. Over all this place was better than average. It was Saturday at 1:45 and it was mostly full with lots of noise like silverware hitting plates. This was the busiest Chinese place in the Milwaukee area I have been in. The fried rice was dark with pieces of meat in it and not clumpy and stuck together so the loose firm grains were nice. The rice and egg roll were a bit above average but nothing that will blow you away. Milwaukee Chinese food places have yet to have a lunch combo where the egg roll and rice were spectacular. Mongolian beef is my dish of choice and it sucks at most places. Here it was really good for a change. I asked for extra hot which most places don't understand because it's never hot but here it was. Finally hot in spicy was in the house for a change. It had good flavor and it was hot off the wok and they didn't load it up with filler vegetables like some places. The meat was plenty full and had that tender Chinese texture which is great. The place looked clean and modern unlike some of those 70s looking places. This is around the coroner of JJ Ch ens which is very good so it's going to be tough to choose which one to eat at so maby I will flip a coin. I will still try some other places with good yelp reviews but these two places will be the go to for sure. When with my son's wife's family who live in Milwaukee, you go where they say it's the best! My first reaction when I walked in confirmed that it was probably going to be good - Chinese people eating there. I certainly wasn't disappointed - crispy skin chicken, szechwan chicken, singaporean noodles, fried rice, and a few other dishes. All in all the dinner was outstanding, particularly the fried rice. A word about service... Our service was fine but sometimes the "attitude" you get is just cultural. Both dishes were an absolute mockery of decent Chinese food. They're rice is not sticky at all. Everything tasted fried and coated in sweet syrup. The flavors are random and not pleasant in the slightest. This was quite possibly the worst Chinese food I've had in my life. I'm not normally hyperbolic about my reviews of restaurants with a majority of people claiming "Best food in Milwaukee" way too frequently for mediocre restaurants. I really wanted to like Fortune...but unfortunately I don't. It is a shame that it's one of the few authentic Chinese restaurant in the area. I've gone 3 times now, each time hoping that I'll find something that tastes similar to what I expect in an authentic Chinese dish but really it doesn't. The thick noodle in the beef chow fun was mushy and lacking in flavor. I tried to fix it at home, but there is no way to turn mushy overcooked noodles back to al dente noodles. The fried rice with salty fish and diced chicken was too salty. Service SUCKS. I've been ignored and scoffed at by different cashiers and waitresses. There really is no Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee that compares to the ones from the Bay Area. It's not that the food is bad per say...it's just not the same. Fortune is definitely the best, most authentic Chinese restaurant in the area. There are two menus, one of which is the Chinese menu and features even more authentic dishes. I suggest asking for this one and ordering off it. My favorites are the seafood cantonese chow mein (crunchy, pan-fried noodles topped with seafood), salt and pepper squid, and the Chinese broccoli. The salty fish fried rice is also very good. Went here based on the recommendation of a Chinese-American friend. We were a group of nine and ordered off of both the Chinese and Americanized-Chinese menus. We thought the food was great. I grew up in Chicago, eating at Chinese restaurants in Chinatown and I thought the food and service were comparable in quality. Bear in mind that service at Chinese restaurants is typically slow - so if you are bringing small children, bring something to occupy them. Or order some appetizers. Highlights of the meal were the shrimp with honey walnuts, eggplant with garlic, and shrimp with lobster sauce. The chicken fried rice was very good too. We ordered deep fried pork chops with salt and pepper, fish fillets with salt and pepper, beef with black beans sauce, and salted fish and chicken fried rice. The dishes are good but nothing especially stands out. The fried pork chops and fish fillets have a nice coating, however in this trip somewhat the fish fillets meat is not as firm. We have gone to Fortune Restaurant several times now. I would like to start by saying that I am aware of all the other Chinese restaurants in the area, and that I have tried quite a few of them. This one is my favorite. The prices of the food at all the Chinese restaurants I have been at are generally the same. This place offers reasonable prices and when I ordered take-out they gave me a generous supply. I love their BBQ Pork Fried Rice. It's the best I've tasted. I Also love their Sweet and Sour Pork, as they cook their pork perfectly and not overdone. I can not speak to having tried EVERYTHING on the menu, but what I have tried, I LOVE. Lastly, on the inside, the atmosphere is friendly, however quite busy most of the time. I also love how their tables work. The center piece spins around so if you want you can easily share food with the rest of your group. If you're looking for good REAL Chinese food, then this is the place to go. The food is not greasy like you're typical Wong's Wok or other places like that. They do not have a buffet, but that is a bonus for me, since I know that they don't mass prepare their food and I know I'm getting good quality. They have a drive thru and although you have to wait until it is ready, they still have pretty fast service. I was told that Fortune is "where the Chinese people go to eat" and it's true. When we were cruising the awesome Hwy 100 (remember when people legit used to do that -- why was that ever a thing?) a few months back, I really wanted to find a decent Chinese place. Yelp reviews on this place were really solid so I definitely wanted to give it a shot. My conclusion on Fortune is I just...don't....know.... The food is alright. I have never been to China and therefore have never experienced true authentic Chinese food. I know people say this is the most authentic Chinese food around, but somehow I just don't believe that. Our group of six ate here on Christmas Eve. (The traditional Jewish Christmas ). We were seated right away when we arrived at 6:00. That was the last thing to happen quickly. Our order didn't get taken until 7:00 and the first food arrived at 7:45. We've eaten here before so I understand that service isn't their specialty, good authentic Chinese food is what you come here for, but this was ridiculous. What made this worse was that the food was mediocre at best. We started with hot and sour soup that was neither and crab Rangoon which had no crab. For entrees I've always liked the salt and pepper squid, but this time some of the squid had that fishy taste of seafood past it's prime. We had two chicken dishes, orange chicken and governor tsao. Both were heavy on breading and light on flavor. The only highlight was the shrimp with walnuts. It was tasty and the shrimp were huge. My final complaint was that our entrees came almost 30 minutes apart and my daughter who is a vegetarian got hers last, more than 2 hours after we sat down. I'm a fan of the food but not the service. This restaurant offers the Americanize chinese and authentic chinese food. We love ordering the same thing: salt and pepper squid (or shrimp), salty fish and chicken fried rice, pea pod leaves stirfry, and beef short rib in garlic sauce. We do more take out than dine in... the lady who takes order over the phone always sound so mean... like she's yelling at me. But I know it's probably just her accent that sounds rude. Well 6 years and renovations later the Food was HORRIBLE $13.95 for beef tenderloin with mushrooms was couldn't eat it, the beef was so chewy you couldn't chew it and the mushrooms were chewy and water logged. I refused to pay for it. The service was horrible I had to get out of the booth and find the waitress so we could order (she was sitting at a table talking to another waitress). My friends chicken chop suey wasn't much better. I will never come back here. I am not a real fussy eater but this was just to much. SAVE your money. C.S. West Allis read more
