I love going to repurposed recreational sites! This used to be an old military installation! The history mixed with re purposed park area/playground is well done. I would like to have seen the bunkers opened and turned into a living museum. There is great viewing points to see the passing by ships, picnic area, lighthouse views, showers and bathrooms. I wish I would hace seen pictures of the old base or a better historical layout but it was still informative and a great piece of history. Please bring your bugspray!!! There was playgrounds for the kids and plenty of things to explore. I coukd definitely spend an afternoon here picnicing and taking pictures! Definitely something to see before waiting in line for the ferry back to Galveston! This is a free attraction!

We really didn't check out this place as much as we wished. There are a few building left, you can't get into, and they look modified to WWII defenses. The problem was if you got out of your car you were attacked by mosquito's. Not just your average ones, but Texas attack mosquito's that swarmed you. We stepped out of the car for 10 minutes and ended up running, and I mean running, back to the car. We each had no less than a dozen bites and then we were hitting them like crazy in the car because some of the swarm got in. We finally got the situation under control and when we looked up it was to see another family that had just pulled in making a run back to their car. So unless you can run faster than a mosquito I highly recommend you prepare yourself for this experience. We mentioned it to a local and she told us that they have used deet so long in the area that the mosquito's think of it as a cocktail. That warning given; The fort was interesting to look at as we drove by the buildings trying to get as close as possible and were able to take a few pictures. Too bad we couldn't get the real fort experience but maybe next time we will outfit ourselves in mosquito's nets and make a unique fashion statement.

It's a great place for children to play, run around, and look at the ships going to port in Galveston.

It's a nice place for walking, fishing, or just soaking in the outdoors. The park is well kept and has a calm atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind. The headquarters is located on the beachside and that's where we checked in. There is a bayside post with a nature center, but both were closed when we went. We were given a trail map and recommendations on which trails to check out. All the trails are mowed regularly and we didn't see any trails with overgrown grass or brush. However, some trails can be flooded or under water because of where they're located. There is a boardwalk that crosses open water but the boards didn't look stable. There was another boardwalk that was washed away from the last hurricane and hasn't been repaired yet. We were able to see a few different kinds of birds on a quiet and relaxing Thursday morning. The beach was clean and didn't have many people there. There are multiple access points to the beach from the day-use parking lot and the nearby campsites. Their gift shop offered a variety of souvenirs for purchase and the ranger was friendly when we asked her questions. We enjoyed our time and think it's a worthwhile stop to enjoy the hiking trails and beach without crowds.

What I loved the most was that my husband was able to navigate a good portion of the park with his walker. We parked in the north lot at first. There was a nice concrete path that led from the north parking lot across a fun bridge and almost down to the area where the senior playground is. The rest of the path was in gravel, which he was still able to navigate with his walker (probably will be difficult for some walkers, but his has four big wheels and a seat). He got plenty of exercise with his walk, resting now and then on his seat! I then left him at the senior playground to wait for me while I walked back, got the car, and drove down to the parking lot there. Then, I had fun using the equipment that was there, including the swing! Fun day, especially since my husband could enjoy it with me. If you have a handicapped loved one and need a fun place to go, try Carbide Park!
