Love this place. Price is crazy low. 8$ for two of us. Drive for us was 2 hrs but the drive was beautiful. The gentleman that greeted us was very informative and friendly. We were able to have our dog with us on a leash as long as we picked up after him. He of course couldn't go in any buildings and they stressed not to tie him to anything. Easy. It was a great walk with lots of information posts. The buildings you get to go into a such a great look into the past. Easily would go back here. We took it easy and it took about 1 1/2 hrs and could have spent longer but we were right at closing time. That said they did not rush us out. read more

Really enjoyed this park. Ok, not a park - "Historic Site". That's semantics in my book. Or actually another way to pay since my annual Park Pass doesn't work. No big deal. At $4 to visit, you will spend more on gas to get there. Most of the fort is still around in one form or another. Original, decayed buildings. Restored and refurnished. Rebuilt in situ. All lend to show what it used to look like. If this were closer, it would be MUCH more popular. It really was a gem and worth a visit if you haven't seen one of the frontier forts. The drive to Fort McKavett was nice and peaceful as on our way there, we took 83 north from Junction to Menard and then 190 west to FM. When driving up, there's a main visitor's center which was the hospital at one point. In here, you'll check in with the guest rep and pay the entrance fee ($4 for adults - there are lower fees for children and seniors too). It's also stated that even though they're a park, the Texas State and Park pass doesn't apply as Texas legislature transferred control to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008. Initially built to protect area settlers and to serve as a rest stop for those traveling to and from California. The 8th Infantry established the post and changes of commands occurred and was eventually abandoned in 1859. However, it was re-established in 1861 due to the eruption of the American Civil War and served as a POW camp temporarily until 1862. Another reactivation of FM in later years and eventually the community dwindled down to some community members who continued to stay even after it was closed. One of the buildings, Fort McKavett School, served to educate soldiers but after it (FM) was at its final abandonment in 1883, locals continued to use the school until the 1950s. Many of the old buildings still stand although a few were only remnants of what they once were. Of the ones still standing, they're decorated in time period furnishings to give you the feeling as if you were there in the 1800s. It's a really interesting place to check out. An excellent place to visit. Staff was very courteous and helpful, and we enjoyed visiting the ruins and the historical sites. Be prepared for walking, ware comfortable shoes and a sun hat, and take your time. It's worth it. read more

A well preserved and interpreted US Army frontier post built in mid 19th century to protect travelers to California and points west and early Texas settlers from Indians. Except for a brief period during the Civil War, the fort was active until 1883. When it was abandoned by the Army, locals moved in and stayed until the last one left in 1973. The army's schoolhouse educated local children until the mid 1850s. Allow and hour and a half to two hours for a nice walk around the grounds and the exhibits in the visitors center. read more
