I happened upon this place by accident. I needed a new watch battery, so I took my watch to a jeweller, who recommended a watchmaker in this building due to lack of appropriate tools for my particular brand of watch. Said watchmaker wasn't open on Fridays. We'd noticed on the way in that there was another watchmaker in the building, so decided to try our luck there.
This building is odd. The modern foyer and lifts belie the antiquated upper levels. Long, quiet corridors of white, solid wooden doors. What hides behind them?
After two left turns we saw a "WATCHMAKER" sign ahead. Nothing gave away that the business was actually open except for the sliver of light coming from the slightly ajar door. I knocked and heard a quiet voice from inside.
Opening the door, we were greeted by a tiny workshop, scarcely lit by a few lamps, cuckoo clocks hanging on the walls, and a charming old man. He fitted my new watch battery on the spot, no fancy tools required, for the cost of the battery only. Much cheaper than your standard shopping centre watch repairs.
Coming out, I felt like I'd just been on a strange adventure. I'm glad I found this place. read more
