That's exactly what the Barking Lot is, it's a simple little dog park. The beauty of it is that it is downtown where virtually no one has any backyard space, so having somewhere to take your dog to run around is nice. This is especially true when it's 20 degrees out and you want to put your energy towards staying warm and drinking hot cocoa versus walking your dog. That's exactly what happened to me - it was freezing and I took my foster puppy here to do her business and was so thankful that I was able to just let her run around while I mentally channeled a warm sunny place. It hit me then how lucky downtowners are to have a little dog park. Like I said it doesn't have a bunch of features, but it's decent sized and well fenced. I have only been here in the winter so there isn't a lot of grass, but the ground always seems well taken care of and leveled after rain causes puddles and holes. It also is always stocked with poop scoop bags and has a nearby trash can. Usually no one is here (perhaps busier in the spring?), but the few people and dogs I've encountered here have been exceptionally nice. There are also two benches for people to sit while their dogs run around and it is well-lit at night!

It is incredibly spacious and is all grass turf, which is great but as someone noted before does get muddy. There is parking nearby, a poop bag post, dog toys, a hose, small tub, and seats. It's in a nice part of downtown Jackson, right by Lift and some other shops. Also a random, but somewhat relevant, thing to note is that this is a dog park, not a playground. If you bring kids, they may get bored. But this park isn't technically for them anyway. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because it was very muddy when we visited. I also hope they set up some obstacle courses or something to give pups some exercise and mental stimulation.

The park has covered pavilions where the humans can sit while the dogs enjoy water stations, agility stations and lots of fenced-in fun. Dog waste stations with the usual supplies are provided. There are are rules posted here and online. The park is open from 7am to 8pm. Do check the fence to make sure your dogs can't get through it. There was mention of a hole, though I didn't see it. At least to us, this was a hidden gem that a friend recently mentioned - and it's a great one!…read more Shelby Farms is already so expansive, but this adds another welcomed layer for the kids. Our little one enjoyed all of the various adventures and spaces in this area, and we will definitely be back several times over. My only thing is that it needs some maintenance and tidying up; I'm not sure how old it is (again, new to us despite us having a child for three years now), but there is definitely a good bit of wear and tear and some update that is needed to really make it spectacular. But it's definitely great!
