Our family of six spent a totally enjoyable four-plus hours this past Sunday at Jerry Hiltner's Vintage Village Antiques in rural Osakis, Minnesota (population 1,750). "Rural" takes on new meaning out here on the dirt roads of northwestern Minnesota where the only facilities on this site are a pair of outhouses. Jerry offers tours and field trips of the "Village" by appointment 7 days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Pre-scheduled visits for small groups include a Thanksgiving-like candlelight dinner for a modest fee per person. We enjoyed walking through a half dozen buildings on the property including a vintage school room, a small church, a blacksmith shop and a few vintage structures filled to the brim with interesting antiques and collectibles for sale. The highlight of our afternoon was an incredible home-cooked, family-style Chicken Dinner with all the fixins in the candle-lit dining room of the site's turn-of-the-century farmhouse. Jerry is the gregarious owner and host, as well as chief cook and bottle washer of this awesome village of vintage buildings that he relocated to this bucolic site. He is a chef with a life-long passion for antiques and all things antiquarian. Jerry's passion and good-natured love of life is immediately felt as you meet this country gentleman. After our magnificent dinner, Jerry capped off our visit by giving us a buggy ride through the fields in a vintage Amish-style carriage pulled by a smart nine year old Filly. What a day we had at the "Farm". For me, it was like stepping back in time and into a snapshot of life a hundred years ago. Thank you Jerry for your incredible Minnesotan hospitality. Without question...10 stars on a scale of 5!

We had plenty of room, though we spent most of our time outside of the cabin! Firewood readily available for purchase and lots of rental options. We rented the pontoon and had a blast. Randy and Judie (the owners) are very friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an affordable cabin experience on a beautiful Minnesota lake!

I decided to take a break as I made my way to Winnipeg. I had no problem pulling into a parking spot. I used the women's washroom. There was a strong bleach smell. This rest stop is maintained extremely well. I liked learning about the Red River ox cart trails. It's nice when you can do a self-guided tour while you take a breather from driving. This rest area was a bit quirky when it came to the vending machines. If you are looking for a snack, the vending machine is inside the building. If you feel like a cold drink, it's located outside. I'm wondering if this outdoor machine works when it's freezing outside during a normal winter day. This year hasn't been normal weather-wise, so this beverage machine seemed to be okay when I was there. If you have a pet, there is an area for pets to stretch and play. It was a colder day when I was here. The trees and snow made this outdoor area picturesque. I'm sure that it's gorgeous during the summer. There was a picnic area that would be perfect to relax and enjoy lunch outside. I like that Minnesota rest stops invite you to submit feedback. The state has decent, nicely maintained rest stops. The rest area has a long sweeping turn which is something I appreciate as it truly helps to slow down the cars as they come off the highway at 75 mph. There is a "front" truck parking area and the car parking in the back is accessible for trucks as well. So keep an eye out for larger vehicles coming through and give them plenty of space. Lots of greenery around, benches, picnic shelters and enough room to enjoy some peace before getting back on the road. [Review 20749 overall - 160 in Minnesota - 1731 of 2023.]
