It is neither quaking, nor bridged, nor particularly Quaker, though I did feel a strange spiritual calm while waiting in line at Auntie Anne's, watching dough be twisted into symbols of carbohydrate comfort. Inside, time folds in on itself like a pair of clearance khakis. There are stores selling perfume, gadgets, jeans tight enough to restrict original thought. There's a Cheesecake Factory, which exists on the same moral plane as purgatory: vast, overlit, and full of folks trying to remember what it was they came in for. The mall is clean. The ceilings are high. The escalators move up and down like Sisyphus with a corporate sponsor. No one seems to know why they're there, but they are, floating from JC Penney to Old Navy in a retail daze. The air smells faintly of artificial scents and unspoken longing. There's something poetic about a mall in the 21st century. A living fossil. A place where you can still see teenagers in small herds, clutching bubble tea and dreams. Where old men power-walk past Forever 21, defiant in orthopedic sneakers. Where the Apple Store shines like a sterile shrine to tech-assisted distraction. Three stars. Not because it's bad; it's not. It is precisely what it claims to be: a mall. A decent one. One with enough stores to feel like you might find something, even if you don't know what you're looking for. It would get four stars if it had a decent bookstore. It would get five if it could answer why I felt slightly lonelier when I left than when I arrived.

Boy, do I feel like an oaf - especially when crossing the transom into the Museum of Footwear Science and Sneakerism at the New Balance store on the strip mall outskirts of Princeton. Initially drawn in by the the promise that this well regarded enthusiast brand is made in the USA (truth... some are but the vast majority are made in China) these in-store Sherpas really know their stuff measuring feet and recommending the perfect pair to send me cruising to nowhere on my recumbent bike or just goofing off with my newly fitted techno-toes propped up a table watching actual athletes doing their thing. Five stars for a store that still believes product knowledge and customer service matter. That's more than I ever got from Stan Smith.

First, thank you to Melissa!!! You were unbelievably helpful…read more I was so delighted at the large selection of reasonably priced shoes this store offered. I walk with a cane, so it took me awhile to traverse the aisles. I was collecting boxes of potential purchases practically from the moment I entered the store. Melissa came right over, offering to take my boxes & find a comfy spot for me to try them on. Right away she spotted two of the brands I selected, letting me know how comfortable other customers had found them for walking. She offered to find different sizes and colors, when I liked a couple of pairs and they didn't fit just right (even offering to order them for me). But, she worked her magic and ended up finding what I needed right in the store! I walked out with 5 new pairs of shoes that I love. Most of all, I feel great about my experience shopping. Did I mention that she offered to take the bags to my car for me? When I said 'No, that's OK', she rebalanced the boxes in two bags for easier handling and walked me to the door. Yes, I was fortunate, it wasn't busy (Tuesday, 11:00 - 12 timeframe), but I applaud excellent service when I receive it, and the service was EXCELLENT. (Melissa did say that Saturdays could be crazy busy.) If you are someone like me, who could use a little extra time and attention shoe shopping, I suggest you try this FAMOUS FOOTWEAR and definitely ask for MELISSA. (I told her I am calling in advance the next time I shop there to make sure she is working. And, believe me that visit will be soon.) Your very happy customer

Terrible customer service…read more Came in a little before 6pm on a weekday night looking to exchange a shoe to a size up. It was not in stock in that color and I wanted to try on the next size up in other color to see if it was the correct size to order. A woman who I guess was the manager started barking right away that they were going to close in 2 min. All I needed to do was try on the next size up in a diff color to see if I should order that size in my color. There was another family there shopping and trying on shoes. The woman said aggressively several times for people to come to register since they were going to close. So I rushed up to see what I needed to do to process my exchange. But she was not ready!!! There was confusion about the receipt, she pulled up the wrong account and wanted to send my exchange shoes to another state--it was a giant mess and the base of it was her rudeness and rushing of customers! If you want to CLOSE the store at 6pm, you need to have last customer enter at 5:30, 5:45. If you let customers IN at 5:55, then you really can't be barking at them to finish by 6pm!!! Honest to God, who ever would expect a big box store to close at 6pm anyhow??? The other two errands we were running stayed open until 8pm and 9pm!!! When I looked at the clock in my car after leaving, it was 6:08. Geez! 8 min past closing time. The other family, a man with two daughters just ignored her barking, came up to be rung up behind me and left the store after me. Good grief! Such an unpleasant experience! I'll think twice before coming here again! If you let a customer come in, then give them good service! Sometimes you might have to stay 15 min longer!

Last trip to a formal wear purveyor was their sister company Jos. A Bank just down the street from this store, and that was to buy a halfway respectable "interview suit" for a reasonable price. After all, there's always some sort of "sale" at these places. Didn't have worry about that here, as the attire package was all picked out by my buddy (or likely his fiancée lol). It was just a matter of getting measured and choosing a pickup location. Ángel helped me out and he was awesome. The store only had 1 other staff member inside and was surprisingly busy for a Thursday late morning- Angel advised that this is a very busy time for them. While I did have to wait a few minutes for help after my 11 am appointment, I understand. Between phone calls and several walk-ins, the staff are humans, not octopuses. Angel got everything done for me in 10-15 minutes max, even with multitasking: shoes fitted, pants, jacket, and you could tell he is an experienced professional. I'm lanky and he picked out the right stuff to try on, the first time! He also explained their policy about being able to get re-measured up to a month prior to the pickup time, and you can change pickup locations within 2 weeks of the pickup time. The price was nearly $250, not cheap and the only thing holding back 5 stars here. There's also a non-refundable $12 "damage & handling" fee, just call it nickel and diming and drop the euphemisms. Hey, that's the wedding racket for ya. It's all worth it for a friend, and I'm glad I got the great help from Angel. He made everything (aside from the cost) painless, and made me wonder why I put this off so long!

I was at Verizon yesterday and in the middle of my consultation on 5G, an oddly shaped bald man with a tape measure was fitting me for a suit. They couldn't survive WFH and their previous roster of eighteen Jersey stores have dwindled to a handful but in retrospect, I'll miss being assaulted by their all-too-eager salesforce upon entry and the ubiquitous buy two suits get seven free business model. Who needs seven suits when half the homebound workforce is still debating whether to shower seven times this month. Farewell Men's Wearhouse.
