I had been putting off foot surgery for a while, but it got to the point where it hurt to stand or walk for lengthy periods of time. I began asking around for a reference to a good foot surgeon; what I got was so much more. A co-worker of mine referred me to Dr. Vohra. I sat, hesitantly, for a while looking at the number and dreading what might be in store for me. Because my mother suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, I have seen what recovery from knee surgery has been like for her and I was petrified; afraid that foot surgery would be equally horrifying for me. The thought of physical therapy afterwards was almost more terrifying -
having to move the toe just days after having it operated on. Finally, I got up the nerve to call and schedule the consultation. I am so glad I did.
When I arrived at my appointment, I was greeted by Danielle, who was working both the front desk as well as assisting in physical therapy. Danielle was highly attentive and kind to each patient that came through the door which made me feel even better about the type of care I would receive. Sometimes the people you first see and meet when you walk through the door can be the deciding factor on whether or not you feel you've chosen the right place. Needless to say, my mind was at ease, even though I was still nervous about what the doctor was going to tell me.
I was brought back to the room and in came Dr. Vohra. I was immediately impressed by his professionalism and caring nature. I could tell that he is one of those doctors that ACTUALLY CARES about his patients. We took some x-rays of my foot and he went over his diagnosis with me. Even though I was scared, he made me feel comfortable about the procedure. And never once did I feel like I was being rushed out of his office. He invested the time in me as a patient. From that point I was convinced that I made the right decision and I had found the perfect doctor to handle me and my nervous disposition about the surgery.
Surgery day came and I was getting ready to be wheeled into the operating room. Dr. Vohra and his team made me feel completely comfortable despite the fact that I was shaking like a leaf. I had been though surgeries prior, but the idea of joint surgery and having a screw put in my foot made me the most nervous I had ever been. Dr. Vohra's bedside manner when I was on the stretcher being wheeled in was most encouraging. Everything happened as he had described - before surgery, during surgery, and in aftercare. He was accessible by phone or appointment if I had questions or needed anything at all. He made the entire process so much easier. Now I am not going to lie, recovery from foot surgery has its cons - it's difficult to get around for the first couple of weeks, and you have to wear a plastic thing on your foot when you shower. If you're a woman, shaving is a chore, but it's only temporary. However, it ended up being nothing like what I had envisioned in my head.
In aftercare, came the physical therapy - something I was EXTREMELY nervous about, so much so that I needed anti-anxiety medication to help me at first. Dr. Vohra's team of physical therapists are wonderful. They made me feel completely at ease and went slow with the procedures if things were not comfortable. Never once was I "forced" to do more than I could handle; and I must say my recovery has been splendid. Everyone there really takes the time to make sure you are doing okay. Bottom line - they care about you. Russ, one of the physical therapists, has a wonderful sense of humor and he takes pride in his work. He makes me laugh when I am in the chair; and sometimes that is all I need on days when my foot is a little sore from being on it so long and I am trying to make it through the appointment. I actually enjoy physical therapy - something I thought I'd never say. As a matter of fact, I won't go anywhere else for it. I plan on sticking with this wonderful team.
On a side note, although I am not a patient of hers, Dr. (Mrs.) Vohra always smiles and says hello to me when she is there. Sometimes she will even stop and chat. That is how wonderful they truly are. Later on, I found out that more than one of my co-workers goes to them and they all say the same thing -- they won't go anywhere else. To me, that speaks volumes.
