I bought the asparagus on sale (it was at the end of its life but it was cheap), a huge apple cranberry pie on sale (it was very good!!), and some bread they promise is baked fresh daily. Well, that loaf certainly wasn't baked that day. It was dry. The shriveled pomegranates were almost $3 each... compare to ALDI 1.89 and they seemed fresher. Upsides -- The staff was amiable and the place is clean and more interesting than ALDI, for sure! It has a bit more variety and world cuisine than a standard grocery store (like tahini). Still, I won't go back unless I need something out of the ordinary (that I can't get at ALDI or Food Lion).

You can read other reviews and see that it is standard practice and not a one-time occurrence. The culture of the store is built and put in place by management, and it is failing horribly at this location. What poor / complete lack of planning it is to try and check out of this location only to find 2 registers open. ALL but 2 self-checkout registers are closed, sectioned off, and red lighted. This is not random, equipment issue, it is ongoing, and the only two that are open are the two, marked Spark Check out. Great managers are Pro Active, understand hourly customer rates, flow rate and have procedures in place to meet or exceed customer expectations. This manager is not Pro-Active, and sadly not reactive, as no adjustments are made to improve. The complete lack of caring is evident.

The green onions were going bad, and pears had some spots on them... but all in all I was able to get most of what I wanted, if not everything. In a small town, you get what you get! I'm used to a brand new and clean and fresh ALDI, so this was honestly a bit of disappointment. But it's not the WORST of the ALDIs, which can be some you don't want to go inside.

I have been a regular customer of 89 grocery for many years and their service and selection are…read moreoutstanding. They do not pretend to be something they are not they are simply a quick stop to get fruit, candy, and other miscellaneous items. The staff is gracious in a natural way and easy to talk to. I am a gardener and love they carry onion sets. Those items are very hard to find in Mount Airy. "89" is a small, hidden away gem - although very close to the interstate entrance/exit ramp -. Be aware they are closed on Sundays, a prerogative of small business owners Proving they are not part of some monolithic chain store enterprise! I highly recommend it.
