The cinema is alternative in many ways. It doesn't mainly show the big blogbusters - and if they do, it's in the original language, mostly English. Well, if the film is French, it's French and so on. Sometimes, they are German subbed, sometimes not. I love films with a certain depth - that's a cinema to go to if you like films that make you think more about after you left the cinema than when watching the movie. If not right from the start, you realize that you are not in a usual cinema when you try to buy popcorn. That's because they don't have any. Same with Nachos. Instead, you can buy potato chips and Haribo sweets. I had to get used to it at the beginning, but after some time you get used to it. And it would be stupid not to go there because of the popcorn. After all, as the films are a bit more special, there's fewer people who would potentially go there. I guess not having to clean sticky popcorn and cheese from the floors saves a great deal of money. Considering, the 6 € entry are a very reasonable price for a cinema ticket in Cologne. There are no price reductions for students and so on. But there is a bonus system for people who go there often. Last but not least: They do have spaces to put your drinks in during the film. They do not have double seats.

A nice marriage of art house smallness with American retro. Quite a charming bar, and while not…read morecheap, the joys of being able to see both English and French cinema not far from one's door is a joy. I liked the comfortable seating, good crowd atmosphere, garden seating. A little gem.

It's next to the main train station as well, so it's a great spot to burn time before a flight or train. I only had about 2 hours and it wasn't enough--give yourself the full afternoon or at least 3 hours! They offer a free service desk for jackets and purses. However, don't bring a large tote--they have a strict size limit and you'll have to leave it at the desk. Even if you aren't an "art person," the sheer variety here from Pop Art to Surrealism keeps it from feeling boring. Each room felt well-curated and combined with the high ceilings, there was an openness that allowed each art piece to breathe and have it's moment. Do not sleep on the gift shop. I found some nice trinkets for my desk and souvenirs for friends + family.

I stopped by on a Sunday evening for two hours before they closed. Ideally, you'd like to spend 3-4 hours here, especially if you do the audio guide. Museum Ludwig is Cologne's preeminent museum of contemporary art. You'll find works of art from pretty much every major artist who painted in this style. Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, Rene Magritte, etc. It's a feast of riches so I'm only scratching the surface. Beyond the quality of the art, something else I care about at museums is how the exhibitions are laid out. Here, it's intuitive. It's pretty easy to go from room to room without worrying about missing something. Some museums aren't laid out in the best way logistically---Museum Ludwig is. There are three floors. Start at the top and then make your way down. Outside of the layout and the artwork, the final piece for me is comfort. You have that here, too. There's air conditioning which certainly is not a guarantee in Europe. You have free lockers. You have free WiFi. Well done all-around. If you're visiting Cologne, Museum Ludwig should definitely be part of your itinerary.

When you walk through Eppendorf, my neighborhood, a central district of Hamburg, Germany, you see…read morethe streets are lined with elegant turn-of-the-century town houses, cafés, small bars, restaurants, shops, and numerous small rivers flow through the district at the north tip of the innercity lake Alster. And then you see a large number of bronze colored cobble stones in the sidewalks, in front of some house entrances. These are sidewalk memorials as I call them. Eppendorf had like the Harvestehude and Grindel quarters a large Jewish population until the second world war. These are silent memorials to those who have lived among us until then. These bronze colored paving stones are called Stolpersteine ("stumbling blocks") in German. They are set into the pavement in front of the entrance of buildings. Each stone has an engraving of the name of a person who had lived in that house and who had been deported and killed during the years of the National Socialism. The stones are simple but effective daily memorials embedded in the sidewalk. In the area were I live in Hamburg nearly every house has these stones. Some have even 10-12 stumbling blocks. On the picture I posted you see one of the stones in front of the neighboring house were I live (photo). Stolpersteine is since many years a privately financed project of the artist and craftsman Gunter Demnig from Cologne. He says: "You have to take a low bow infront of the house to read the stone engravings." The United Nations statement of the Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27: "We recognise that humanity is still scarred by the belief that race, religion, disability or sexuality make some people's lives worth less than others'. Genocide, antisemitism, racism, xenophobia and discrimination still continue. We have a shared responsibility to fight these evils." This commitment applies to every human being. Never forget. Gunter Demnig lives and works in Cologne, and sets his stumbling stones everywhere in Germany. Here is a nice flickr group of photographs: http://www.flickr.com/groups/stolpersteine/pool/
