Now that the pandemic is "over" in that the libraries are reopened for browsing and study, I had a…read morechance to check out this pretty amazing library. Modern, open, airy. None of the stuffiness that you might expect from a classic library. With open stacks and lots of well organized books, this is a bright and clear space. There are a bunch of study desks along the huge windows. Most of them have power outlets nearby which is helpful because the library also has a free and unfiltered wifi. While you do need to be a resident to borrow books, no account is needed for Internet access. I found two or three books I liked, taking two of them to a comfy seat to ensure that they were what I wanted. Checkout is super easy and completely unattended. I'm very pleased with this branch! The kid area isn't that big but does seem to be about 1/3 of the library. They don't have a lot of dress up or play areas but they have a lot computers. We had a large group so we had to double up on the computers. I found some good books to check out and a few movies also. The staff was pretty helpful but even though they are on the other side of the computers they seem be a little ways away from the kids area. The restroom is on the other side of the branch away from the kids area. The branch is clean and was very quiet. It was a rainy day during our visit. They had a cool view of outside and it made it very cozy to be tuck inside the library. Mountain Island Branch 4420 Hoyt Galvin Way, Charlotte, NC 28214 (Review 475 overall, 19 of 2021)

I thought I could scan at home but couldn't, and the Huntersville library is closed for renovations. On my first day here (yesterday), I watched a man on a computer sneeze directly into his hands and continue typing, I walked by a little girl who coughed twice loudly without covering her mouth, and I accidentally dropped my change so all the coins went rolling under the bookshelves. I literally got on my hands and knees to search and collect the change--they were quarters! Today I went back and let the librarian know that I hadn't scanned anything in years. I pretended I was dumb so she would walk me through it. It worked. Very seamless experience. Prior to finishing this review, I just received an email reply from the person I'm sending this info to. That email reads: "Thanks, Tyler (my pen name). All that's missing now is a copy of a voided check." Back to the library!

After she calmed down we had some time to kill before her mama returned with the car. We decided to go inside and check out the public library. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is a library that looks and feels a lot like the ones I grew up with. When you enter the checkout desk/librarian area is right in front of you. On your left is the adult area of the library. On the right is the children's section. We hung a right and went to explore the kids stuff. There were shelves and shelves of books and magazines for kids to check out. There were a few on display around the area as well. One corner contained some toys and comfy chairs. My daughter, and some other child that she met while there, grabbed the toys and arranged them for a little story time. She then brought me a dozen or so books to read to her, her "friend" and the toys. We read through each one of them. The two of us then took a walk around the rest of the kid's area. Another corner contained more comfortable seating that were portable so kids could move them to a spot of their liking. There were three or four computers lining the far wall that kids could use for various things. Stretching across the front of the kids area were tables and chairs that were occupied by tutors and students. Overall I felt that the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library was an a-ok place to spend a rainy afternoon. Why not more? Well, like I said, it reminded me a lot of the libraries of yesteryear. In our hometown, Tampa, we have some absolutely gorgeous libraries which not only house books and magazines and DVDs and CDs but also house tons of technology and legos and hands-on learning opportunities and museums and local art. They also put on performances and offer educational classes and spearhead recycling initiatives and basically make the library a vibrant part of the local learning community. These are gold standard libraries. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library isn't bad, it just stands a couple notches below what I've seen a library can be at its absolute best.

I will need to come back when I can tour the museum properly. The marker reads, "Mundy House. Built between 1850 and 1870 by descendants of a Revolutionary War soldier and Methodist minister Jeremiah Mundy (1760-1835); One of the founding families of the Rock Springs Methodist Camp Meeting grounds in Denver; The R.O. Mundy family owned the property until the 1990s; Gravesites at the Denver Community Cemetery and Bethel United Methodist Church." The Mundy House is one of the few remaining historic houses in eastern Lincoln County, and it stands a local landmark that documents the history of the Mundy family and the development of Denver during the nineteenth century. The Mundy House is a central-hall house that maintains much of its original architectural integrity. It represents a house form that was ubiquitous in the county during the last half of the nineteenth and first decade of the twentieth century, but nearly all of these houses have fallen into disrepair by abandonment and neglect or have been substantially altered with artificial siding, replacement windows, and unsympathetic modern additions. Preservation of the Mundy House is necessary for educating people about local history, historic preservation, and architecture. [Review 15905 overall - 3121 in North Carolina - 1410 of 2021.]

Would definitely return here for study time, if necessary.
