My husband and I ordered carry out dinners from Flor de Cuba tonight and it was the best meal we have had in a long time! Absolutely delicious!!! We each had the Milanesa dinner which was a thin breaded steak with melted cheese (out of this world GOOD) along with sides of sweet plantains, beef empanadas, and rice/bean mixture. Sometimes I am lewd When sweet innuendo I nurse. As author Joyce Carol Oates probably knows well, food is a marvelous metaphor for many sensual delights. Cuban cuisine is particularly sexy in its spicy variety, tropical flavors and rhythmic overtones of rumba and salsa. When my taste buds encounter Cuban food, the "poetic" images it evokes in my mind's eye often need to be censored when recalling the sensation in a Yelp review. Such could have been the case at lunch today when six of us met at Flor de Cuba. There was one problem that kept my mental imagery from going deeply into X-rated territory: the glacial slowness of the service put a shrivelling chill on all the proceedings. As is the case with anything of a sensual nature, timing can be everything. The meal started marvelously. Several in our party ordered banana batidos (Cuban shakes). I had the privilege of taking one sip and was immediately transported to a place where every receptive organ in my body was tingling with pleasure. That batido was a big tease in a brimming cup and raised large expectations of more culinary rapture to follow. Then began the long wait... Perhaps the kitchen made everything on our plates from scratch. Perhaps they were moving to Caribbean rhythms that are more leisurely than our American need for speed. At any rate, our entrees took over 1/2 hour to arrive. One in our party had to have her meal boxed up immediately to take back to work because she would have overstayed her allotted lunch time. Luckily, we had a lot to talk about to pass the time. We could have circumvented the wait by sampling the lunch buffet, but it was quite limited and didn't look nearly as appetizing as the menu items. When my "appetizer", aptly named "Carnaval Cubana", arrived, the magic of the moment had been lost and my enthusiasm for the meal had shrunk dramatically from the moment I had taken that sinfully sweet swig of batido. The fare was still impressive. My appetizer was a meal in itself and consisted of a fried sampling of Flor de Cuba's greatest hits (a great deal for only $7.95). I also ordered a side order of black beans ($1.95) to accompany it. The cheese empanada was light and zesty, the papa rellena (potato stuffed with spicy beef) became tastier with every bite, the yuca rellena was tongue-stiffening, the macitos de puerco (deliciously marinated pork topped with sauteed onions) was bursting with flavor and the fried plantains served as a sweet dessert. Only the ham croquetas failed to please me. Still hungry for more, I sampled a piece of tortilla cubana (an omlette that featured spicy sausage) and some black beans and rice provided by my neighbors. I was less impressed with their fare. The egg concoction was much too bland except when you encountered a sausage and there weren't enough of them to go around. The black beans and rice were simply too dry. My friend and I agreed that if I had dumped my juicy black beans over the mixture, it would have been just right. Unfortunately, I'd already downed the whole bowl. This place is loaded with potential. If they get their timing down, I can see myself spending a lot more time here and perhaps achieving a culinary climax of sorts. Food-wise, I received great value for money for $13 (including tax and a too-generous tip). Flor de Cuba also has a bar area in back that is as large as the front dining room and features a bandstand, dance floor and lots of booths. I can envision this place jamming on a weekend night. There is also a dessert counter near the entrance that could initiate an orgy of delight in your mouth. As I entered, I sensed a disturbance in the sweet force. I looked to my left and there it was. Not one but two display counters filled with all kinds of sweets. I was flighty just looking at them. I told my friend "I wanna try that one, and that one, and that one". As the hostess led us to the table, I was excited to try the desserts. The Cuban sandwich is my litmus test for Cuban restaurants, so it is what I ordered. I was hungry (I had unintentionally skipped lunch that day). When I saw the sandwich I was glad I was sharing the meal. The sandwich was ginormous. And it was rectangular, cut diagonally into two large pieces. The s'wich was lukewarm, as if it had been put in a sandwich press 2 hours ago then reheated ever so slightly before serving it. My friend thought the sandwich was dry. The papa rellena (stuffed potato) was also lukewarm. I didn't like the seasoning used in the meat. Unfortunately, I couldn't identify the spices that didn't taste good to my palette. I prefer the papa rellena my mother makes. Flor de Cuba has been on my list of places to try for quite some time now. When a friend suggested we go there for dancing salsa, I was game. Thursday night from 9:00-10:00pm, Flor de Cuba has a free salsa dance lesson. The male female ratio was not equal that night. The instructor's wife, Maria, was my dance partner. She knew every step. She was patient and encouraging. As the lesson progressed, I considered myself very lucky to have wound up with her. I had a great time learning to dance salsa. It's more complicated than I thought. Between the meal and the dancing, I totally forgot about dessert. And like Inspector Gadget's arch enemy, Dr. Claw, I was like "I'll taste those sweets, next time. Until next time, Flor de Cuba. The dancing was my fav part of the evening, 5 stars. The food was just barely acceptable at 2 stars. I'm rounding down to 3 estrellas. The optimist in me says perhaps there's another dish that will be so good and so authentic, I'll lose my accent and speak perfect Spanish. I'll give them another shot. Tasty Westside Cuban. My old favorite, Café Miami, is long gone and I don't find myself near Café Piquet very often. Where I do drive a bunch is on Hwy 6 just north of I-10 which is where you'll find Flor de Cuba just off of Clay. It's an interesting place with plenty of stained wood and mirrors. The kitchen is open. And there's a big party room available. They appear to do a lunch buffet that I've not had the opportunity to try. What I usually order and recommend: Any of their Empanadas Ham Croquettes Smoked Pork Chops Black Beans Yuca Plantains (Green and Sweet) Café con Leche Mango Shake Is there anything like a green vegetable in Cuban cuisine??? Don't ask the waitress as there is a bit of language barrier as others have noted. Pricing seems to run high as with other Cuban restaurants that I've been to. Before it was one of my favorites but since the remodel I find the food is not as good and they have done away with the little bakery. I love finding good cuban restaurants. The simplicity of black beans and fried plantains is bliss and you can certainly find that here. All of their dishes are a delight. Classics like Roba Vieja and Vaca Frita never disappoint. They also have Paella. If I'm every hungry enough--I'm going to order it. They also have a buffet for lunch. How often do you get to say? "I had Cuban buffet for lunch!" Brilliant! Friendly service even! They get points off for desecrating Tres Leches though. tsk tsk! It's more whip cream than cake and nowhere moist enough to be a true tres leches. Looks like La Latina Cafe is still my reigning favorite on this dessert. The two star rating I'm giving is for the friendly staff that greeted us upon entering the restaurant and seating us right away. The waitress that took our orders spoke very little English and laughed when I asked if they had mofongo as a side dish because I had seen it on here from another review. After she laughed, she shook her head and said they didn't have it. Um, okay...but what was so funny? Weird... Anyway, we ordered plantain chips and fried pork with black beans and rice and fried green bananas. The food was brought out pretty quickly, however, there was a weird putrid smell coming from my plate. I wasn't exactly sure what it was until I bit into one of the cooked onions on top of the pork. It tasted like it was old...and slightly turned. The fried pork that we received were pork loin chunks that were deep fried and just as dry as cardboard. The fried green bananas just tasted like unseasoned potatoes. The black beans and rice were the best thing on that plate...maybe because they tasted seasoned? There was also a huge lack of seasoning. Now, believe me...I don't even season a lot of my food at home with salt or other seasonings because I stay away from all of that but this was pretty horrible in my opinion. Oh, and the plantain chips were okay but very bland. Perhaps we should have ordered them with all the fixings that they have as an option. In our quest to find new local favorites close to home we took some friends and went to Flor de Cuba for dinner Saturday night. As soon as you walk in you are drawn towards the dessert case right past the hostess stand. While my fiancé and I were staring at the treats our dinner guests managed to find the hostess and got seated. Damn you sweet tooth!! We ordered mojitos while and ate the delicious buttered bread while we tried to decide hat to order. I am not generally a fan of mojitos, and not sure what constitutes a good one, but I know what I like, and I enjoyed this one. When the dust settled, we had papas rellenas, Masas de Puerco Fritas (fried pork chunks), Platanos Maduros Fritos (fried ripe plantains), Arroz Amarillo/vegetales (yellow rice with vegetables) ,Moros y Cristianos (black beans and rice), Picadillo a la Habanera (Cuban ground beef) , Tasajo (dried beef) all of which earned earned us a trip to the salad bar. Conclusion- it was all ok. The black beans and rice were undercooked and just missing something. For lack of a better way of saying it, it was just off. And the piles of it I saw sitting around the place makes me feel everyone else felt the same. My fried pork chunks were good when I got a fatty piece otherwise they were a bit dry. The Cuban ground beef was great with great flavor, the plantains were spot on and the dried beef flavor was splendid as well. The papas rellenas was good, nothing noteworthy but she gave us some of their house hot sauce which is incredible. I've never had something so good... And actually spicy. Thank goodness we ordered that appetizer because the hot sauce went perfect on the pork. In fact, they should hand that stuff out with the pork together. The salad bar is a joke, some fruit(which is actually good) some lettuce, ranch dressing, jalapenos, and mac salad. Well the mac salad was good so that made up for the WTF moment. I'm not even making it up, I have never seen a salad bar with lettuce and ranch dressing. The waitress was a little slow, and time and time again I felt like we were waiting just a little too long to get what we needed, but she was a little timid as well, perhaps they go hand in hand. All in all we look forward to coming back again. We hope that one day we can bit their buffet that is from 11-2 for 8 dollars. Oh and one other thing, the prices on their To go menu online and on the place are not priced right. The menu when you sit down is more expensive. What a terrible experience! We should have trusted the reviews but we wanted to give it a chance without judgement. So here goes: The good: -margarita - friend said he'd give it more stars only for the margarita -plantain - probably the best out of our meals -piña colada - friend said it was delicious, a bit strong though. -bread - toasted bread with the green chili sauce on the table is pretty addicting -not very crowded so the wait for 9 people on a sunday evening was fairly quick but I guess we know the reason why..so this falls between the good and bad. We then called him out and asked about the good news. What a joke! He hesitated and said "uh the good news is that the other orders are good to know" what kind of customer service and good news is this? -roasted pork was good at the beginning but as it sat on the plate, it got drier and drier. -black beans - a lot of reviews raved the black beans. It was ok, nothing spectacular. No flavoring or spices in it so i don't know what the hype is about. The ugly: -our orders were all messed up especially the sides. Out of 9 of us, only 2 plates were correct. He wasn't even very apologetic or anything! A nice complimentary appetizer or something would have made up for him getting our orders messed up. -even with our side orders messed up, he didnt even insist that he change the orders and correct them. My friends are the type to be ok with what they're given so if it weren't for some of us being a bit more assertive and requesting they bring the correct sides, other non confrontational patrons wouldn't speak up to correct the order. With that said, the waiter should have been persistent to give us better customer experience instead of be ok with the messed up orders -with the disappointment of them not having enough roasted pork orders, we hinted to the waiter to give us extra fried plantains, he actually agreed! But when we found that we didnt get any extra fried plantains, he was totally pulling our chain. Overall we don't recommend this restaurant. The service and quality of food wasn't worth the experience. Our experience with Cuban food has left a terrible taste in our mouths. Hopefully another Cuban restaurant can redeem that. I highly recommend the owner of this restaurant to reevaluate their quality and read the reviews else I don't think they'll be in business for very long. read more

I have a biased opinion of this place because, as someone who grew up in Miami, Florida (from Cuban parents) I have a love for this kinda food. That being said, Flor De Cuba is great. Overall the food it's the mark. It's not the best Cuban food you can find but the options in Houston are slim. I recommend the Vaca Frita. You won't be disappointed. Sandwiches are pretty good too. Apps are alright, not always fresh. And the desserts really aren't the best. Lots of room for improvement. The second area that needs improvement is the service department. Some of the ladies waiting tables aren't very welcoming. Overall I'm really glad they reopened after the great flood and are back in the old location! If you're looking for something other than the usual Mexican food, give this place a try. BTW. They have a great duo Salsa band that played around 2 pm on Sunday, if you like that sort of thing during lunch. read more

So this was the first time I'd ever been here as well as my sister. We were hoping it would be good. For appetizers, I got a beef empanada and she got a papa relleno. We were both impressed. When our food came out, we were totally unprepared for the huge portions. I ordered the rotisserie chicken with red beans and white rice. She got chicken fricasse with black beans and rice. Great bakery. Great authentic food. Great drinks. We had a variant of a Cubano sandwich and the mixed appetizer plate. This was every bit as good as Cuban food we've had in Miami (which is sort of our standard). Everything was hot, fresh, well seasoned. The fried items were nicely crisp without any grease although they weren't my favorite french fries ever. There is an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet but I honestly didn't see anyone spending the $9 for it. We may have missed that crowd. Cocktails and coffee were wonderful ~ and did I mention the WONDERFUL little in-restaurant bakery? All we took was fresh bread but I was sorely tempted by how good the baked items looked! I couldn't believe our bill was so high we paid $55.00 for our entrees and a juice each. The customer service was ok nothing special. Unsure what drive me to eat here, but was glad to find it. Walking in, the restaurant was larger than it appears. Has a casual decor with lots of Cuban interior flavor. Contrary to other reviews, the staff was very friendly and the food came out promptly despite it being a bit busy here. We tried the ropa vieja. It was excellent! The meat was juicy and tender with right amount of flavor. The oxtail stew was pretty decent. It was a little bit thicker and heartier than I would prefer, but good flavors nevertheless. The meat was tender and fell off the bone easily. The yucca was decent although I would've preferred for it to be softer. The plantain chips were too hard for my tastes. There aren't a lot of places to get great Cuban food in Houston -- thankfully Flor de Cuba is there! They've an extensive menu and incredibly helpful wait staff that will offer recommendations. While I've never been to Cuba, there's no doubt in my mind that the food is authentic. Be sure to try the Cafe con Leche, done the Cuban way, for a strong and very delicious coffee. Delicious food! Amazing overall experience and service, the food was fresh and very authentic.

It's hit or miss really. My husband and I have been twice. Both times the service was just fine. We went before the dinner rush. It's a little confusing to have the low key music, and the club music coming through from the club side of the place, but it's not that noticeable when you're in good conversation :-) The serving sizes are really big too. Main dishes: He had the Pierna de Puerco Asada (roasted pork) both times, and both times it was incredibly salty, but my husband inhaled it - hit. I had the Enchilado de Camarones (shrimp in Cuban creole sauce) and it was amazing - BIG HIT! Last time I tried the Camarones al Ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce) and it was a miss - the shrimp was served in a dish with melted butter, and what I think was 1/4 of a cup of jarred garlic. It didn't even have salt, it was lacking any flavor, and disappointing compared to the amazing cuban creole sauce I had before. I'm not sure if the jarred pickled garlic is traditionally Cuban, but it was a miss for me. The sides: My husband has tried the yucca, fried yucca, and rice with black beans mixed together. He says they're all a hit. I've tried the yellow rice with veggies and the ripe fried plantains - hit! However, the first time I got 3 pieces of plantain, and last time I got 6, so consistency may be an issue but I'm not sure. I also tried the "grilled veggies" and what I got was steamed mixed veggies. They may have been cooked in a pan, but I was expecting something from the grill.
