Freilichtmuseum am Kiekeberg is a museum village, replicating countryside life of 19th century. All the houses (about 30 of them) built in a traditional way and dedicated to a particular aspect of country life. There are domestic animals and barns, a bee-garden, a forge, carriage and saddle-maker's workshop, a cement factory, bakery you name it. This place looks to me pretty self-sufficient and that's probably exactly the way villages used to be.
People who work there (and some of them live there) are dressed in a traditional cloth. They show to visitors how to bake bread, to weave linen, to make a horseshoe. There are courses offered for those who fancy to learn these skills.
There are lots of blue skies, green grass and fresh air. Well, besides the pig barn :) The whole village is very spacious, green, peaceful and well taken care of.
There's also a traditional dancing hall with Kornbrennerei (translating freely, sort of like vodka brewery). Next to it is a wonderfull restaurant, serving typical German food. Restaurant itself worth a separate 5 star rewiev.
Museum shop offers lots of memorabilia, food/liquor and also some DDR products.
There is also a museum building showcasing how our mom and dad's generation used to live their day to day life.
It's a great trip for families: there are many interesting things for kids, playground and simply lots of space to run and jump.
