This place is really special and it was the first burial grounds I visited in Germany. Unlike many others I have visited this place has a large number of above ground graves which is unusual and many of them are beautifully decorated with metal carvings and headstones. Many of them are family plots and you can see two or three generations of people buried in common family graves. There is also a memorial to war veterans and many famous people in Nürnberg are buried here. This place is very popular as there were a number of tour groups arrving in the morning and making their way to different graves and finding out about famous people in the area. Look at the signs as most of the famour peoples graves are marked on the map and you can go and visit them. A must visit in Nürnberg.

The main entrance gates are nothing short of impressive. Newly restored they haven't lost any of…read moretheir original glory. Once you enter you can follow a very broad path from which smaller paths lead to the various sections of this huge cemetery. And yes, be prepared to walk as there are no vehicles allowed other than the groundskeepers. Graves here are well maintained. Most decorated with nice plants, shrubs, flowers and other decor. There are big compost containers as well as water spouts, making it easy to maintain your plot. You can also subscribe to a grave service and they will maintain the grave for you. Since my grandma and her father were both gardeners, we do our best to maintain her grave accordingly. I think she'd love the various colorful plants growing on her final resting place. In typical German tradition, you 'rent' your graves for years at a time. Since we do not use grave liners, our dead will eventually return to the earth and after about 10 years the next coffin can go in. Urns are generally buried along the sides and corners of the grave. Strictly urn graves are also available, keeping urns int he family homes is unheard off. Catacombs are of course also available. As is usual the regular graves are outlined, so no danger of stepping on any dead souls. The headstone is at the actual head of the dead. The front generally depicts the family name of the persons buried here and on the back the individuals are listed in the order of death occurring. Listing their full name as well as birthday and date of death. I have to say that this cemetery just exudes a peaceful calming vibe that is hard to find anywhere nowadays. The entire area reminds of various clearings in wooded areas. There are benches to sit strewn throughout this property and they are perfect to just sit and reflect. The cemetery is easy to reach with public transportation stopping at various entrances.
