Flamengo Beach is the best kept secret in one of the most famous holiday destinations in the world. When one thinks of Rio de Janeiro, the beaches that always spring to mind are Copacabana and Ipanema. Flamengo beach however is the best all round destination. Why? Lets start with the overall vibe. There is a beautiful nature park full of countless varieties of palms and other tropical plants. The tropical birds which live in these trees add a calming affect to the atmosphere. There is the most stunning view of Pao de Acucar(Sugarloaf Mountain) and the surrounding mountainous islands. On the beach itself there is an endless variety of games, being played and taught for the sporty types. The water itself has no rubbish in it, and whilst admittedly you can only swim on the days when the current is coming in from the open sea, it is only set to get better. Billionaire investor Eike Batiste is spearheading a project to finish up the clean up of the Bay. Coupled with the total refurbishment he is undertaking at the famous Hotel Gloria this part of Rio is set to become the "it" destination in South America. Now is the time to chance a visit. Flamengo is not known for having many tourists, so visitors will also be left in peace to enjoy the tropical surrounding. July to September is the best time to visit, if you like Sun that is safe enough to bring the little ones into all day long. The temperature is a very agreeable 25-27 degrees Celsius every day. With nice breezes, no humidity and not too dry. I have been to many spots from the Seychelles to the Mediterranean to the Gran Canaries and the Carribean.
