Will not be back! $12 for a very bland cheeseburger and $6.50 for over-salted fries. I'm surprised this place stays in business

Big-Juicy-Fresh-Classic-Different. 5 words to describe 5 Guys. Alright so the secret's out. I first had this nationally franchised burger a while back, but when the first came to SD I wasn't in too much of a rush to try it again as it's very popular, but when it comes to your backyard you have to go. I would have reviewed the one in SD, but found this to be more opportune. The burgers are a nice blend of fat to meat. The National Standard of 80/20 doesn't apply here in Southern California. I prefer a 70/30 unless I can get grated onions in the mix. I'm not quite sure what they use. Here it's not about the sides like most burger places, but it's about the toppings, they are classic all American choices unlike the more exotic and untested Counter .A lot of people compare it to In-N-Out, but it's really not a comparison. One is a fast food joint with very little options and was built on simplicity, speed and goodness, the other is built on toppings. The burgers here are much larger, not the fits in one hand hamburgers at other places(sorry In N Out, only kids get the regular and although the double double can be eaten with 1 hand everyone prefers 2, so yes that is a 2 handed burger, but it's a double also) make. Now don't go crazy here, most combinations with more than 2 toppings dilute the burger itself. Yeah you can put whatever you want on there, but the toppings accentuate the meat and the sauce accentuates the meal. To those who prefer more traditional fries to INO you'll like them here because they're thicker, more substantial and stay crisper longer. A few of you will be disappointed because it's not the well oiled machine yet, it's new, but you figure it's a national chain. It's not yet up to par with the other locations. A few of you won't like the prices being higher as it's not fast food, but the majority of you will like this place. Give it time, figure out your winning combination and don't be like so many others before you and overload a good burger ruining it with 4 toppings. Might as well get a salad at that point. We visited the San Marcos location about a week ago...we went a bit early (5:30) since we figured it would get crowded for dinner...it did! We were lucky enough to get a seat out on the patio...good thing because it's a very small shop inside and the the tables are pushed close together and, once the crowd does set in....wow, it's a Claustrophobic nightmare! My son loved the free peanuts...makes the wait in line and for the food a bit nicer. The food was good. You have the option of ordering either a hamburger (there are other items on the menu as well but we only ordered burgers) or a little hamburger. The difference is a double vs. single...the size of the burger is the same. I'm glad that I ordered a little burger because the amount of meat in one burger is about equal to two burgers at any other fast food restaurant...If you order your burger "all the way" it comes with all sorts of yummy things...including grilled mushrooms (will remember to order extra next time). The french fries were really good (crispy on the outside, soft on the inside) and there were a lot in one order. We tried the Cajun fries as well...a bit too spicy for me...the Hubs loved them! I did have an issue with the way my hamburger was "slapped" together...the toppings were all over the place and the burger looked as though it had fallen apart while it was cooking and it was only sort-of put back together. Also, they only cook the burgers medium-well...However, once the sandwich was rebuilt, I did enjoy the fresh, meaty taste of the burger... I'm sure we'll go back, if we're in San Marcos...but I doubt we'll make the drive out there just for 5 Guys... When I lived in DC, Five Guys was some A+ level burger and fries. Compared to the competition in Southern California, Five Guys is behind the curve with their burgers. Fries here still amaze. First, I hear so many people comparing Five Guys with In N Out. They don't compete as Five Guys is not fast food and costs about double the price ($10-11 per person). There's no drive-thru and the food takes 8-10 minutes to come out. However, it does compete with Burger Lounge and Pure Burger, both of which are making much better food. The main issue is that Five Guys' patties are underseasoned and the bun is a mushy, fake, corn syrup-type of "bread" that just smashes into a thin layer of sugary nothing while eating. In contrast, Pure Burger and Burger Lounge offer real brioche buns that taste home-made. In addition, the competition has better quality toppings like real, artisanal cheeses while Five Guys uses what tastes like Kraft singles. Overall, this was a good burger ten years ago on the East Coast. Fast forward to Southern California in 2018, and the competition is ridiculous. Five Guys hasn't modernized at all and it shows. On to this location specifically. Our service was friendly. Tables were not cleaned off/wiped down. The Coke machine, which was a fancy machine that can make things like Ginger Ale with cherry and vanilla, was out of Diet Coke in both units. Our burgers were 3-stars. Even loaded up with toppings like grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, pickles - the burger was bland and underseasoned and there's no way to fix that. They opened this location earlier this year to my surprise. I guess Five Guys is really expanding their horizons by opening all around the West Coast. The burgers here earn the 3 star rating. I don't find it really consistent each time I visit. Sometimes it's pretty bland, while other times it's pretty delicious. One thing I do love here are the cajun fries. I like the amount of spice and seasoning that they put into it. Is it better than In 'N Out? I can say their fries are. If you're looking for a better burger between the two, I'd give the edge to In 'N Out. read more

My husband frequents this location A LOT because we live just a mile away. He's become quite a regular and they really treat him well. The peanuts are always good (and plentiful). They overfill the "Little Fry" like it's the last bag of fries you'll eat in your lifetime! Not to mention being tasty, too! PROS: The peanuts. I love cracking their peanuts while we wait for our food. Fries-they give you quite abundant amount of fries so I only have to order the "Little Fry." CONS: The burger patty could be a bit bigger. While the "Little Fry" portions were big (I think because my husband is a regular), it's on the "more expensive end ($3.89)." I love and good burger and after reading several reviews of Five Guys Burgers and Fries from my yelp friends in San Diego, I was really looking forward to trying this burger joint that recently opened up in North County. We went on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm and it was still very crowded. The line was perhaps 15 people deep with one cashier. There were a good 6 or 7 people making burgers and calling out numbers though. Not sure for who because the line did not seem to move for the first 5 minutes or so. We finally got to the front of the line and placed our order; a cheeseburger with mushrooms, lettuce and tomato. Our order came out within 10 minutes and we managed to find a table by the window. We had to clean it off ourselves but tables were hard to come by so we didn't mind. When we started to eat our burgers, we realized that the burgers each came with two patties. I must have missed that on the menu because I wouldn't have ordered it that way - one patty was enough! I ended up taking off one of them and felt bad for wasting it. I just didn't need the second patty and I wish they would've told me or made it more clear on the menu. I thought the burger was ok but thought there was a little of a doughy taste to the bun. It had a funny after taste which was not very pleasant. If I weren't so hungry, I probably would've not eaten as much as I did. Fries were pretty good though. They were freshly made and were crispy and hot when we got them. Recommendation: invest in pull down shades for the windows. We sat at a table two seats away from the window and it was so hot with the sun blaring in on you - you couldn't escape it. We had to wear our shades inside because it was so bad. Dear Five Guys, Don't get me wrong! I'd come back, but the burger is exactly that, I've had better. And I know what I like on a burger and I don't ask for much. To reiterate, while I admit that I would come back, I've had better. However, portiion wise, I have no beef with that. Note pun. I had been warned ahead of time by friends that love this joint to not do this and not do that. So we ordered the small burgers knowing full well that it'd be a normal-sized burger each of the a regular hamburger and a bacon burger and we got the small order of cajun fries. The verdict: It was edible and wasn't bad, but yeah! I've had better and been more excited about other burgers I've had. I'm not sure; can't quite pinpoint what it was - but it wasn't as juicy as I've had other burgers and it just wasn't impressive, though the burger looks delicious. You apparently, again, can't judge a book by its cover. Is it just me? Their fries are soggy and covered in Cajun spices. Flavor was great; soggy was not so great. I get that regardless of brand that all fries go soggy, but really? This is fresh....? Though, I am told that you can ask your fries to be "well-done" which makes things a lot better. Perhaps, next time. You might be Zagat-rated per the signs all of the place and the awards/kudos won back east; but so.... am I the only one who doesn't get the hype? All I can say is change your name to Grease Guys. This place is vile. My burger wrapper had white congealed fat covering it when I pulled it from the bag. The grease was dripping from the burger patties and soaked though the bun to the point the bun broke and was a mess. The fries, which they pour into a bag, had so much grease the bag broke at the table. Dining room was filthy and sticky with grease. Just gross. I don't get the whole peanut thing either? They serve free peanuts. They have box of peanuts in the middle of the dining room. It's gnarly watching people grab them with their booger hands, coughing all over them, and filling several cups up with peanuts. Then you watch and they eat like two peanuts, all the while they have 6 cups full of peanuts, which end up in the trash or on the floor. Two stars because the staff was super friendly and clearly trying hard. I can also tell they put some care into building the burger (veggies were stacked nicely). I have been here twice now. I was very disapointed the first time but thought, Hey! They just opened so let them figure things out and I will try it again. Sorry to say that the second time was no better than the first and I will tell you why. First let me start by saying that the concept is great, real simple menu. Burgers, fries, sodas. Very simaler to what In & Out does. It even looks some what the same. Lets start with the burger. Choice of toppings is good. Bun is not toasted, Burger pattys are average at best and wraped in a sheet of foil. When you unwrap it you have this smashed up burger that dosn't even look good much less taste any better than any other fast food place which is what this is. Second, The Fries. They make a pretty big deal about the potatos here. They have sacks of them all through out the place and a sign that tell you were they come from. THEESE ARE THE WORST FRIES YOU WILL EVER EAT. Soggy and Greasy. How do you take a great potato and screw it up??? Theese people have found a way. I thought the first time a came here it was a mistake. But after the second time and them being the same again. This is how they serve them. Not even a hint of crisp to them. The worst fries you will ever eat. And thirdly the price. The do not have a combo here ( burger, fries and a soda). you must buy everything seperatly. So what will that burger, frie and soda cost you? $11.00 - $12.00 befor sales tax. Theese people should be ashammed of them selves and pack up and go back were they came from. The sad thing is, they are busy. Does anyone remember what a good burger is. Welcome to Goodburger, when you are hoping for greatburger. The patties are the best part (moist, hand formed, crumbly double patty). The fries are different ( thicker with natural cut deep fried in peanut oil) but not better or worse. The Good: Nice people, the diner-style place had great energy on opening day. Fresh-cut fries, complimentary peanuts are a nice touch (like Gladstones in Malibu). Meat was decent quality. The bad: Soggy buns. I prefer the toasted ones. The calories--but can't fault them. All burger places are same. Artery cloggin but sometimes you just have the craving. Not sure whether I am a fan. They certainly have great business on opening day! I hope they consider my bun comment, and keep up the great customer service. The fries were alright, but I like the fries at In-N-Out a lot better. Service - The service here is what made me never want to come back. In other words, I rather die of starvation than to return here and waste my money on mediocre burgers and horrible, rude and unprofessional service I have seen here. Came here today since my boss was aching for a burger. I had been hearing the hype lately for this place, and like most things that are hyped, I was a little disappointed. Not to say it was bad, because it wasn't. But I think you all know what I mean. That and the fact that it was $12 for the standard burger/fries/drink. Really? Ordered the regular burger with the works and added jalapenos, along with the Cajun fries. I was hoping it was going to give it a kick, but the jalapenos weren't spicy. Weird. It was a big tasty burger though. Fries were OK, just slightly better than something Jack in the Box would serve. You are forewarned that the line is out the door from 11:30-12:30 (lunchtime), and don't expect to get a table either since it just opened up. Went to this place after seeing a loooong line of people a few times. My initial reaction was it looked like an In-n-Out copy. The tile and uniforms the staff have on is where the similarities stop. It is nice that all the food is fresh and cooked to order. But how do they mess up french fries when all they do is brag about their potatoes? They have sacks of them piled on the floor, and a sign telling the customers where their potatoes came from. Three words; soggy, limp, and bland! I was really looking forward to a great burger. I have been going to this location for several months at least once per week. Recently the air conditioning system has been broke often and during this crazy hot summer customers and employees need a place to stay cool and enjoy a burger and fries. Not anymore as of today. Stopped by for lunch. I am a vegetarian and most burger places offer some sort of veggie burger, but not Five Guys. I ordered a veggie sandwich with cheese which consisted of grilled mushrooms, peppers, onions with lettuce and tomato on a bun with American cheese. It left something to be desired. If you are allergic to peanuts, this is not the place for you. You have been warned. I asked, three times, if there was any way possible that the fry oil could come in contact with the food and was told "absolutely not", "no way, we're like, totally careful, and like, watch that carefully" and lastly "not on my watch". We asked that the burgers and fries be bagged separately (I think they are in general, but just to be sure). I was afraid to sit down anywhere in this place because of all the peanut shells (we were not aware they give free peanuts before we went), but I'm not so severly allergic that small amounts of the peanut oil on a table top would give me a reaction. So we sat. And listened to the "not on my watch" man sing. He doesn't sing well, and we did not appreciate, or enjoy his loud (obnoxious) singing. The place is cramped, it was hot, and it took a very long time to get our food. Upon un-wrapping our burgers, they were pretty much already falling apart and the buns were well on their way to soggy city. 2 bites in, I couldn't feel my face, I couldn't breathe, and I started to itch like hell. I'm not sure hubby even got to try a french fry. *STAB* thank heavns for the epi-pen. We desserted our table, and our food and headed to urgent care. The next day, we contacted them to let them know what happened and the attitude was pretty uncaring. "Don't they have signs posted or something?" was what corporate asked us. Okay. I will admit it. I have had a COMPLETE change of heart about Five Guys. I'm pretty sure I could get kicked out of California for saying what I am about to say (so good thing I am moving back to the Beltway soon) but I might even like it more than In-and-Out. I know, I am as shocked as you are. When I put my cheapness and long history with In-and-Out aside, I think Five Guys makes a better burger. I guess I have been won over by the have it just the way you want it approach. Now I only want it my way (with bacon, cheese, and fresh jalapenos). The standard slap the same thing on every burger (onions not necessarily included), unless you order it animal style which gives one minimal and slightly different alternative, doesn't seem to meet my needs anymore. I prefer Five Guys and their readiness to meet my every need. If only all of life was so accommodating. It's still pricey....if you were to have it every day.....which you shouldn't......have you looked at those obnoxious calorie counts next to the price? Having a burger and fries should be a treat. I only rarely indulge in such a treat, so I might as well make it a good one......and I now feel comfortable enough to admit....that good one can be found at Five Guys! read more

After all the hype and anticipation, I was underwhelmed. Many compare Five Guys to In-N-Out, but in flavor and product quality I think the burgers taste like a better version of Sonic, very middle America. The first thing I noticed was how sweet the burger was, probably from the thin, squishy bun and processed cheese. The meat was a super thin patty that they smashed and flattened while it was on the flat-top. I like choosing my own ingredients, and it's nice to see the list of options had good variety, but in the end, I'm not rushing to go back. The fries are from fresh potatoes and are a thick-cut type. They were very greasy and soggy. Bill for 1 cheeseburger (double patty), 2 little cheeseburgers (single patty), 1 grilled cheese, 1 large fries (served in a large sized drink cup), 4 small drinks was just over $33. That's a lot of cash for a mediocre meal. In-N-Out does it better at a fraction of the cost. The shopping center location is convenient with lenty of parking. But inside, the layout of it doesn't flow well. The staff moves the line along pretty quickly and it took about as long as you expect for a custom burger to be made. Seating is very limited with no outdoor seating options. Noise level was painfully loud the night we went. We planned to eat in but ended up taking it to-go instead. Bring your Tums. I had a stomach ache the rest of the day after eating here. I guess I cain't handle all that grease. read more

Sorry. I wanted to like Five Guys after all the hype and good things I heard... but it was not to be. First of all, the place looks like a (bad) copy of In-N-out. If they at least copied the food too... then it would have been a thousand times better. The burger was GREASY and had no flavor or taste. Did I mention it was greasy? The fries.... probably the worst I've ever had. Greasy, no flavor, and SOGGY. The burger is shoved (almost smashed) into the bottom of a brown paper bag, with the fries dumped in on top, overflowing. By the time I picked up the bag, half the brown bag was translucent from the grease soaking through the paper. They also wrap the burger in foil, and it looks like it was literally just thrown and smashed together. Soggy bun, greasy patty, no taste... and it didn't even look appetizing. And the price?!? Ridiculously overpriced for not even a good burger. I don't mind paying for a good quality burger... but why would I ever go back here when I could go to In-N-Out and get 4 times the amount of food for what I paid, and better tasting food at that??? I was in town so I decided to stop buy after some shopping. It was my first time here... my mid-western cousin always hypes up how it's the best... and how it's For. The boys. And better than In-N-Out. Their prices for 2 patty burgers made me sad. Expensive. So I got the little cheeseburger (one patty) with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, bbq sauce and mayo (I don't like lettuce in my burgers). Oh, I also got a side of cajun fries. I wanted to get it to go... but, oh hey! It's already in a bag. Awesome. I saw the amount of oil already seeping through the bag... kinda grossed me out. I looked inside... oo, oily cajun fries. I love oily fries. I took out my burger wrapped in foil, unwrapped it, was kinda sad that it wasn't as neatly layered/put together. The bun was soggy. The burger itself... I gotta hand it to them, fresh ingredients. I inhaled my burger in probably 2 minutes.The cajun fries... total noms. I liked how half my bag was full of fries. All in all... I was out with my best friend and we were on a hunt for a good place to eat. You've been in the same predicament right? The shopping place this restaurant is in has quite a bit to choose from, which sometimes can make finding a *great* place hard. Somehow by the grace of God we found a parking spot directly in front of it! Was this a sign? Maybe a clue? Well whatever it was we didn't think twice about missing this chance. Ok so here we go. Walking in this place, it looks different from most burger joints. It really looks different from almost any other place I have ever been to. There was nothing fancy, there was no framed art on the walls or bowties. :) Just quotes on the walls about the food. We noticed there were many people standing around, not waiting to order but waiting to get their food. The cashier was extremely friendly, she helped me order even though there isn't much on the menu. I ended up ordering a cheeseburger and a drink. My bf got the same and added fries, the cashier mentioned only one of us should order it because it is a large serving. So we paid and wandered around, trying to snatch up a seat. That was the only downfall, not many places to sit because it was so packed. The guy at the end of the counter quickly yelled order numbers, I could tell this location is a well oiled machine. Orders are called out, customers are helped, if any question they quickly communicate with no confused faces. I hate feeling like I have to explain my order when there is a receipt. Now to the part you care about the most... I got my burger and OMG was the patty HUGE. I had read previous posts about people comparing this to In-N-Out. There is no comparison. There really isn't. This tasted how a burger should taste. No skinny patties here, it was a very good size, and the fact that I picked all of my toppings added to it. The meat was juicy, bread was soft but not mushy and the toppings tasted fresh, like it was constructed especially for me on a cloud of yumminess. It's true. You have got to try this! After hearing my friends rave about this place, I was excited to give it a shot... unfortunately, I left rather disappointed. Food - I got a bacon cheeseburger. The topping selection is pretty extensive which is a plus. Unfortunately, that didn't make up for the below-average burger. The meat patties themselves were bland... not a hint of any sort of seasoning. The bacon was not too bad (although there wasn't much of it). The cheese was flat-out disgusting... we're talking Kraft American Singles... no thanks! Might have passed when I was 5 years old, but it definitely doesn't work in a burger place. The buns didnt seem any different than any other cheap store-bought buns... nothing exceptional. The burger as a whole was incredibly greasy. That combined with the cheese made for rather disturbing burger-eating experience. With the burger, I went for the cajun fries. The flavor was good, but again - GREASY - so much so, I ended up eating them with a fork. Service - When we went up to give our order, it almost seemed like we were inconveniencing the guy... not very friendly at all. The food also took awhile to come out. The place wasn't busy at all, so I'm not entirely sure what the hold up was. On the plus side, they have free peanuts you can snack on. Overall, this place is definitely not worth the price. The burger, fries and a drink was over $13. With the crappy buns, cheese, and flavorless patties, I imagine this place is raking in the dough. Also, there is no drive-thru, just a small, cramped, loud dining area. The whole experience was disappointing enough to keep me from making another trip here. I'd like to give 3 1/2 but thats ok. Everyone compares it to In-n-Out and though the atmosphere, line cooking, and customer crowdedness is similar, it would be like comparing McDonalds to Burger King. Yeah they both make burgers and fries but they are different in more ways than they are similar. Five Guys has more menu options more topping options and more drink options than In-n-Out. Though Five Guys isn't as cheap as In-n-Out, or other fast food places, you do get a fair amount for what you spend. And the more topping you get on your burger the more you get for what you pay. Make sure if you decide to sit outside that you have someone inside to know when your order is ready, they do not announce ready orders over the PA system. Also anyone with a PEANUT ALLERGY BEWARE! They have exposed peanuts the moment you walk into the building and use peanut oil when cooking the frys. They do have warning stickers on the door but they are small and easily missed. read more

Are you kidding me ? How did this chain get so many good reviews? First complain, when they cooked my burger the guy on the griddle pushed his spatula down hard on the patty numerous times for, i guess, to make it cook faster ? Nincompoop.....you're pushing all the juices out of it !!! When i did receive the burger my fears were confirmed, the patty was as dry as a haystack. Next complain and this was the one that irked me the most....i paid almost $16.- for a Cheeseburger, small fries and a small drink and you guys have the chutzpah to top it with processed cheese ? Well, actually it's not even 100% cheese , just a fraction of cheese is an ingredient in this chemical slice of disgust. If your staff doesn't have the skills of working with Cheddar, Swiss, Mozzarella or other REAL cheeses and doesn't know how to prevent cheese turning into a lumpy, molten protein gel they shouldn't be behind the grill. But then again, look what happened to my patty. Third, the bun itself was very dry and if it wouldn't have been for the toppings that were naturally moist (tomatoes, lettuce, onions...) the whole burger would have been something to forget. But in this case it is unforgettable for the lousy ingredient cheese, the dry cooked patty and the dry bun. I was contemplating to give only 1 star but the soda was pretty good. (Sarcasm) read more

Got Mini Burger and Fries and Coke, 1st thing the price I could have gotten two at In n Out. I don't mind paying for good food but this burger didn't live up to the hipe. I do have to amit that I loved the Fries coming form chicago I haven't had good Grease fries in a very long time. But I don't think it going to work out here. I give this place one year before it gone. read more
