Been here a few times. I remember a couple years ago the food being really good. Been back recently and it has really gone down hill. The food tastes pre-made and processed. Like they got some of the ingredients from the freezer. It is sad because there service and drinks were great. read more

This has been, like, THE restaurant for fine dining in Athens for a while. When we relocated back down here from NYC we eventually made our way over to the "new" location (at least, new to us), and we have tried it twice. I give the atmosphere and service high marks, as the staff was great and the place just looks very very cool; you're eating in an old Milledge mansion. But. Both times we were a little confused: we'd read the menu and it'd be full of a million things that sounded inventive and delicious and we were eager to try. But both times we walked away a little like, "Huh. That was surprisingly disappointing." It's weird to think that this place -- which seems like it could be really really great -- is getting trounced by restaurants like home.made or seabear, who aren't even trying to play the same "upscale fine dining" thing that this is. I get the sense that the kitchen is just not feeling the passion anymore; I agree with another reviewer on here that mentioned if seeming like it had the bones to be a great place but suffered a lack of leadership. And a lack of salt. That said, I'll definitely keep on trying it, as Athens needs this kind of place in it's stable of restaurants, and my hope is that it will bounce back. I'd love to update this review with a more positive one! read more

***5&10 is an excellent upscale rustic restaurant that showcases the flavors and ingredients of the Southeast*** Hugh Acheson's 5&10 has been around for a while, but (a few years ago) it moved to this new location inside a historical house just outside University of Georgia. I am not sure what the old location was like, but this new location definitely feels right for this type of restaurant and the area. The house has an upscale Southern feel, which is evident in the exterior and the country-esque but still upscale dining rooms. The bar is very inviting for local Southerners who like to enjoy 5&10's casual cuisine along with their specialty cocktails. 5&10's menu is mostly casual and rustic, but there is also a fair amount of refinement from starter to entree and dessert. 5&10 is not a fine dining restaurant, but there is a great attention to detail, nice plating and high quality and even premium ingredients like chanterelles. I did not try any of their entrees, but I did try many of their starters and they were all very good to excellent. I started with the heirloom tomato salad, which featured big, juicy and sweet heirloom tomatoes (much better than the heirloom tomatoes I recently had at Yountville's Redd). There was also great balsamic, fried brioche for a good crunch, a housemade creamy ricotta, and basil twigs that provided a great fragrance. I had their sweet corn soup next and it was very good as well as a generous portion. The soup was piping hot and the broth was light, smooth and frothy (great corn flavor). The garnishes were excellent. There was Georgia olive oil as well as good cream and very nicely cooked shrimp (very moist and soft). I had their octopus next and it featured great garnishes. The octopus was very soft. It was served atop Carolina gold rice, nicely roasted padrons, sun dried tomatoes, and very good caramelized Vidalia onions (an ingredient I always associate with the South). Next came their chanterelle tortellini and while everything on the plate was good, I prefer pastas that are simpler and more impactful. For me, it is all about the quality of the pasta, the flavor and texture of the filling and a sauce and maybe one other ingredient to bring it all together. Their chanterelle tortellini featured a whole bunch of elements on the plate from a robust tomato sauce, sautéed chanterelles, ricotta salata, good and thick bacon, and basil. While all the ingredients were good, I think less would have been more here. The pasta itself was very good and thick, but it overwhelmed the filling. There was too little filling, which was a shame because it was creamy and had a good flavor. I finished with their crispy pork belly, which sat on top of spaetzle and it came with a sunny side up quail egg, fennel and incredibly pungent mustard seeds. The star here was definitely the pork belly, which was crispy on the outside and then tender and juicy on the inside. I did not love the garnishes as much as the protein though the mustard seeds had a sweetness, spiciness and tartness that really set it apart from other mustard seed and mustard dishes I've had. For dessert, I went with their baked peach and it was a very nice presentation. It was like a peach tart with puff pastry. It came with bourbon caramel, brown sugar ice cream and raspberries. The pastry was great--great flavor, great color, crispy, and flaky. The peach was sweet and good, but it did not shine as much as I would have liked. Maybe just a few weeks difference in season might have made a big difference. The brown sugar ice cream had a good flavor and was very refreshing. Unfortunately, it was too icy. Service was great. The whole staff was very welcoming, friendly, attentive, professional, and polite. Prices are reasonable given the quality of the cuisine. Entrees are mostly in the mid-$20s and the portions are generous. 5&10 is a great restaurant that not only turns out great food but also showcases the many great flavors and ingredients of the Southeast. I also liked its atmosphere and how it is quite off the beaten path, which makes it feel more like a destination restaurant. 5&10 is a must try if you live in Athens or are visiting the University of Georgia. I would also say it is worth the hour plus drive if you enjoy food and live in Atlanta. 5&10 has its own free parking lot and there are a decent number of spaces. Not worth the hype. I was told it's one of best here, and definitely the price shows is more for the fine dining side. The menu is very unique for a small town, but the pasta is excellent. It's their oldest dish on the menu, and it's worth the try. The front seating staff is very nice, they don't have a reservation system so you need to call. This review is for our rehearsal dinner that was held at the 5&10 in October of 2016. To summarize, we had an amazing experience at the 5&10. The events coordinator Adrian was great. She helped every step of the way to get us set up with the right event space, dinner menu, and alcohol pairings (they even set up a private tasting for us to help decide). Everything with the rehearsal dinner went off without a hitch. We could not have been more pleased with the food and service. I got the chance to visit 5&10 with a group of friends will in Athens. This is not your typical college eatery! But if you do find yourself in Athens you must check it out! The restaurant is in what was once a house. I'm not a big fan of this concept for restaurants. I feel every time I get up and walk towards a door I'm going to run into a server coming around the corner. Also, it makes it impossible to find the restrooms! Now 5&10's layout isn't too bad and I see they have worked through some of the problems with using a house as a restaurant. For example most houses don't have parking for more than 3 cars, so 5&10 has an auxiliary parking lot is available next to restaurant (a huge plus for me). The service was slower than what I'm used to, but could be attributed to our larger group. I also found it weird that we placed the appetizer order, and then got the appetizers before ordering our main dishes. Simply put, the food was brilliant. The Grilled GA Shrimp had some of the best grilled shrimp I've ever had. The grits that the shrimp came on would have made an amazing dish in itself. Now, I always do this to myself, I order a steak at a non-steak restaurant and then get disappointed with the result. The stake wasn't bad but it was not as good as what I wanted it to be. In hindsight I should have gone with the pork chop. Overall this place gets 4 stars for an amazing meal with service that was a bit slow. On a positive note, I love the location and ambiance of the new 5&10 location. I live in New York but am always in and out of Athens, GA, as my sister lives there and I attended UGA. NYC is my place now, but Athens is home. I understand that this is fine dining in Athens, and I think they do a great job at delivering a great experience as far as service goes. However, I am so confused by the lack of consistency with the food and the overall, taste of the food in general. I ordered the rabbit and it was completely bland. I am aware that rabbit is not supposed to have a flourishing flavor, but it should have a unique taste of freshness, hardiness, and well....rabbit. My sister had a stew, that was awful. The spices did not blend and I couldn't decide exactly what taste the chef was going for. It was as if my taste buds got confused as to what to embrace. The current menu does not have these options to order so perhaps things have improved since I was there. I used to live in Athens, GA and had the experience of working in a restaurant there. Since, I have worked in restaurants in Chicago and New York City. I do not think 5&10 has alot of presence of his head chef. I am not criticizing Hugh Acheson, however, when the leader is not there, things in the kitchen can go astray. When the boss is away the mice will play...or so the saying goes. I know it's hard to keep people consistently in the kitchen that really know the menu, food, flavors, and vision of the restaurant but this place has so much potential as it has all the wiring it needs to be great. Perhaps some passionate chefs will get in that kitchen and things will be reevaluated. I have great appreciation for Hugh Acheson and wish this restaurant the best! read more

It did not live up to my expectations, maybe it was just an off night. As I've eaten and the previous location, and it was great. Also love Empire State South and The National. We started with the Hush Kitties and Pimento Cheese. The Hush Kitties, came with a homemade tartar sauce...which normally I hate, but this was delicious. The Pimento Cheese in the jar is just as wonderful as I remember from ESS. Entrees: Trout...it was just ok. Pork Loin, everything on that plate was tasty except for the fritter. For dessert we had the special, Lemon Chess Pie with blueberry compote, very good. We also got the Pear and Champagne sorbet...yummy. and the Grapefruit and Campari sorbet...it was a tart mouthful...I didn't care for it...but my GF loved it. Our service was different. Great waiter. Had a weird experience and the front of the house. And then they proceeded to move all the tables around during our meal...up and over the edge of my friends chair...it was just odd. Parking is challenging...small lot, we parked next door at the bank...much easier. If I have another opportunity to go, I would, and hope for a better experience. read more

Over-priced and average entres for brunch. A great server, I need to say from the start. We were warned by friends who frequented the Lumpkin location with us for years. So we took their word and stayed away Then we received a $50 gift certificate and saw that it couldn't begin to cover a meal for two except at brunch. My wife's pork entree was dried out. My cobia frittata was overdone and maybe contained an ounce of actual filet. Since we saw our neighbors order the coffee cake and it was well described, we ordered it. A box mix would have tasted better. Such a disappointment. Now we have to decide what to say to our kind friends who gave us the gift certificate. read more

One group finished their entree's before the other group ever got the appetizer. Finally started bringing out second groups entree only to be told they were out of one entree at the last minute. To begin, I choose this restaurant for most special occasions and usually leave incredibly full and very impressed. Unfortunately, this was not the case when it came to my meal this evening. The appetizers were inconsistent with the usual and extremely salty. The entrees were unimpressive at best. The vegetables that came with the meal were over-seasoned and incredibly salty. The vegetables that came with the lamb were so poorly flavored that I actually was uncomfortable eating the dish. The meat was well-cooked, but again, the sauces were very off. Burnt, sour, bad. Our server was okay, but when we mentioned that our meals did not nearly meet the normal standards, we were quite surprised to find that he did not go and get his manager to discuss the issues. We expressed what we did not need any compensation, but would have liked to share our disappointment with the person in charge. Truly has gone downhill in the last couple years. Our fish appetizer was undercooked, and our chicken entree was extremely undercooked. I've been to 5&10 three times and each time it's been for their Ramen Night that they have every Tuesday. That being said, I can only speak about my ramen experience. Every time I go, I get great service and an expertly made cocktail. It's fine dinning, but if that description makes you nervous, don't worry. The waitstaff is very friendly and welcoming. The dress is semiformal, but the servers are often in a dressed up casual look (if that makes sense). I sometimes go in a button down with jeans and don't feel uncomfortable, but perhaps I'm an oblivious schlepper. The ramen ($16) is amazing. It's rich, flavorful and filling. If you're a student at the university who wants to try one of the nicer restaurants in Athens without spending all the rent money, it's a nice way to get the experience. read more

Still the best restaurant in Athens. Lovely building with several small quite rooms with just a few tables in each gives each group some privacy. Pleasant skilled and knowledgeable servers all contribute to a perfect experience. The menu frequently changes with Frogmore stew the only constant. No oysters now which I miss. Also only one cheese on the appitizers list instead of a choice of several and no charcuterie plate and no soup; all long term favourites. But there are a number of nice small snacks like outstanding crispy chicken skin and pickled veggies, super appetizers like tender grilled octopus with citrus sections and delecious mains. The cobia topped with wild mushrooms and shrimp was a particular stand out.the dishes are still overly complicated but the ingrediants and taste are terrific. Prices are high, topping out with $42 for steak but this is fine dinning so you do get what you pay for. There are inventive cocktails, a great wine list and be sure to end your meal with homemade "cellos" especilly the cudzu cello which is unique and fantastic tasting (trust me) like most everthing else here. read more

Came here for drinks and dessert after an early dinner in Athens, I really got the vibe that we were putting them out by doing so. We were one of only about five tables in the entire restaurant so that was a bit annoying. Our server was good once we were seated. Very limited dessert selection (3), so I ended up ordering some type of funnel cake with blueberries. The funnel cake itself had a very funny taste and from a presentation standpoint it was a mess. I was never asked if we enjoyed it, left half of it on the plate and we left. This is a big disappointment considering previous experiences at this restaurant. We may give it another shot in hopes of a better experience but will rule this out for drinks and dessert. read more

Good place to go to for a special occasion--that's a nice way of saying you're going to spend a lot of money--$100 isn't out of the question for a dinner for two, which in Athenian dollars is pretty pricey. The good news is that you are going to get a very nice dinner--they use high quality ingredients and make creative entres that put a spin on traditional southern cuisine. The lunches are a bit more affordable though definitely not huge in portions--a good option for if you've had a decent breakfast or are a light eater, and as such can enjoy a nice but not overly filling. read more

Appetizers: Grilled lamb "pastry" $9, turnips & radish $10, a special fish preparation. A fatty fish. Rudderfish $15 x 2. The pastry was missing the pastry, it was basically ground lamb in squares, sort of like Crystal patties and greasy. The turnips were hard to find a taste orientation. The fish was very good but it was served twice at room temperature, as were the other two appetizers. I couldn't figure out the purpose or intent of the "pastry" or the turnips. It was like trying to bat but the ball is a ballon and you just can't hit it. We ordered another fish and it was equally served at room temperature. The main dishes were Frogmore Stew $26, Duck $32, Fried Fish $32, Pasta $22. The oil for the fish was Canola, a euphemism for Canadian Oil, which is regarded by some as unhealthy and a cheap replacement for Olive oil. When in Canada in fine restaurants I would expect them to use Canola, but not in Georgia. It did not meet expectations. This is my own view. You go and form your own view. For the price they charge everything needs to be spot-on. Timing perfect. Temperature, some of the food felt like it had been sitting there for minutes before bringing it to the table. Bringing of the food should have been timely for ALL. The table should have been kept clean from crumbs. When we were done , later, at two separate times two different persons came to take our food away. The first one asked "done?" We said yes and she picked up the plate, we rushed to say please box it. The other came minutes later and the same experience. Except he placed grossly one plate on top of the other as if it was trash. Is that what they think of their food? Again if we had not quickly said "please box" he would have thrown the food away. I still gave a 20% tip. I think the owner needs to send his crew to Table and Main in Roswell or Watershed in Atlanta to see how other people accomplish these things. read more

This is a fancy place for fancy occasions (or when you know someone else is paying). Some of my favorite things here are the chicken skins (to die for!) and the frogmore stew. I have been here twice, and have not bee disappointed ever. If it were ok to get 10 servings of chicken skins and have them for dinner, I would do that. read more

We visited on a Saturday evening and it was fantastic from beginnning to end. we started with cheeses, lamb rilette and parsley root bisque and crab rice. entres we had pasta ribbons, AMberjack, Bavette Steak and Frogmore stew and finally dessert was coffees with lemon tart and lemon frozen yogurt! Loved the place from the moment I walked in. It was so inviting. They also have a small bar area with a very homey feel. I had checked the menu on the Web but a wonderful surprise of great items on the specials board. Lobster salad and there was also a fish special. I loved the appetizer choices...Very interesting. My husband had a pate and I had a pimento cheese with bacon marmalade and homemade crackers. Very good. I also had the scallop appetizer with scallops and cerery root. The scallops were just right. My husband had the shrimp which were very large. The service was very good. I would say this gets 4.5 stars but not 5. I thought the pricing slightly high for the portions. The bread was a little stale and was a foccia...and flavor of the bread was disappointing. Otherwise very nice atmosphere and very good food but pricey. Make sure you have reservations. Was the best of the three and kale Caesar salad with anchovies. Dinner was lamb ribs. Anderson pork and frog more stew. All were awesome in their own way. Pork with beats were great. Stew had shrimp, octopus and corn was also tasty and the lamb ribs with Brussels sprouts was my favorite. John says the same. read more

Dining at 5 & 10 is one of the consistently best experiences to have in Athens. My fiance and I went to the new location for a birthday and everything was stellar from start to finish. We sat at the bar and the bartender (sorry, don't remember his name but his birthday was Aug 1st-- same as my fiance's) was prompt, helpful, and genuinely nice to talk to. We ordered the octopus appetizer, I had the rabbit for my entree & my fiance had the catfish, then we had the dulce de leche for dessert. They have a great selection of whiskey about which the bartender was very knowledgable. Can't wait to go back! read more

I was told after everyone's food came out that the meal I ordered wasn't available. After speaking with the manager, nothing was offered to compensate.
